Maine, Have you been there?

Hello folks,

My Wife seems to have a solid offer brewing in Northern Maine.

I'm excited to live in a remove community again possibly and am ready to have more trees and rocks that people around

10k is about the size of the city, if you can call it that.

The pictures looks amazing and I'm wondering if anyone has ever been there before?

Another cool thing that interests me is their cannabis laws and the scene I've read about there so far. There is medical and compassion clubs. Seems to be getting easier there all the time. Also 60% of the voting pop passed the larger amount for 'use' in med patients as well as ease and protection in getting it, which I think it pretty cool.

Quote:
Augusta, ME: Democrat Gov. John Baldacci signed legislation on Friday expanding the state's longstanding marijuana 'decriminalization' law.

Under current law, possession of up to 1.25 ounces of marijuana is treated as an infraction, punishable by a fine of no more than $600. Defendants who possess greater amounts are presumed to be engaging in the sale of cannabis and face criminal penalties and potential jail time.

The newly approved legislation (LD 250) states that the possession of over 1.25 ounces but less than 2.5 ounces of marijuana will also be defined as a civil offense, punishable by a fine of $700 to $1,000 dollars. (Civil fines for the possession of less than 1.25 ounces of marijuana will remain the same.) The new law also removes the inference that the possession of quantities of marijuana above 1.25 ounces but less than 2.5 ounces is presumed to be for sale.

"Maine's new law will save prosecutorial resources and it makes common sense," NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre said. "It is expensive and illogical to presume that minor marijuana offenders are criminal traffickers. Kudos to the Maine legislature and to the Governor for supporting this effort to revise the state's longstanding cannabis decriminalization law."

The new law takes effect 90 days following adjournment of the state legislature.
Anyways, we're heading there for an interview over the Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada, although I might have to stay on the Canada side because of permit issues and such, but I'll get a taste of the area.

More than anything, just sharing a positive note right now.

They asked her to come face to face.

They essentially told her that HAD to post the job when she called them and talked to the Dean for a while at the college.

Also he said to 'bring your husband' so we can talk to him and help him find some work as well.

They offered housing to us as well. YAY!
Good pay, cheap cost of living.

Sounds like a community we lived in, up in Northern BC.
It's a resource based town with a college and a University.

/end rant

I've never been there but I've always heard good things from people that have.

Small towns are always nice too, I prefer them to big cities, so much quieter and peaceful.

I was astonished at how nice the man was to my Wife.
He basically said we were just creating a position you'd be great for, but we have to post it.
I take calling me and trying to 'talk me into it' and helping me with work and our housing.

Pretty amazing stuff.

I said when the right one came along she'd know it.
So maybe this is where we're to go after all.

Seems like a chill state, 90% forest wikipedia says.

my older brother lived in Maine for 2 years. I went to visit him for a week when i was about 16 (so about 14 years ago) and it was beautiful. We mostly did a lot of hiking and weed smoking.

What i remember the most was just how beautiful of a state it was (it was during the fall) and how good the food was. The people seemed friendly and there was a lot of out doors type of stuff to do. He said weed was very easy to get and people were "mellow". He eventually moved back to MN and got married but he often talks about how he wishes he would have stayed there heh.

I could talk to him tomorrow night and see if he can give me some more details if u would like sage? *i would do it tonight but we are going to a school play in about 45 mins and i have to put on my face lol*

still sending good vibes your way brother. never lose that smile no matter ware u guys end up

Maine is nice if you can make a living, because really, there is really little there to offer in terms of employment. It's New England and is beautiful. Medical Marijuana is supposedly legal, however, this is a joke as there are no dispensaries. Maine is nice if you like moose and trees. My co-worker has a summer home in Biddeford, Maine, and loves it. It's a little out there for me so I would say it's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

Good luck!

See, I'm the opposite, growing up in Wellfleet, Cape Cod, year round population of about 1,400 people. Everyone knew your business, the cops all new who you were, what car you drove, etc, etc, etc. I prefer the anonymity of larger towns, even cities.

I guess it depends on your disposition and that of the people you're living near.

I've only visited small towns mind you. I've never actually lived in one so my opinion doesn't count for much here.

Maine can be very isolating in the Winter, I imagine (January - March, especially). But you will be next to a college which will make things constantly interesting. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity in an economy where things are mostly bleak.

lol everyone i know that has lived in maine (only a few), all have said the same thing.

"there is nothin out there man"

that could go either way, good or bad lol.

You are gonna be in a college town though so honestly itll probably be real chill and awesome and not too isolated.

Ive only ever been through south maine and Portland. portland maine is a fun city with pretty chill cops.
I was drunk, underage, with an expired ID, chilling at my car behind a supermarket at like midnight and they just let us go lol. Told us to get out of there, but never came back and checked so we just stayed.

When i reached in my car to get my ID, there were these knives out right there b/c camping. The cop was telling me how he shoulda taken his gun out n shit and how i should never reach towards weapons around cops lol.

so yeah pretty chill. If that shit happned here id have about 4 charges and there woulda been at least 5 separate cop cars there totally about 10 cops lol

It can happen anywhere. It all depends on the cops mood, if his shift is about to end and doesn't want to fill out the required paperwork, or if he simply sees something in you he likes. People are people no matter where you are; nice, sweet, cool, judgmental, rude, Ass-holes. You just got lucky. Same place, same people, different cops = different results.

I've been to Maine.

I stayed in Bath, mostly.

BIW (Bath Iron Works) is a sight to behold if they are building anything. I saw them finishing up a DD Class Destroyer and it's 'like wow, man' to see something like that idling in the water, never mind flanking you with deck guns pointing your way.

While I was there I saw a lot of history. I remember standing in some of the bunkers along a major arterial waterway, and thinking man, if anyone would of tried to come up this river they'd be swimming with Luca Brasi.

The interstate is 2 lanes in each direction. Was when I was there. I remember going past some tall rock face covered with HUGE icicles that had all kinds of coloring spilled off the top of the rock face that bled into the icicles.

Lots of scenery. Stephen King's house is cool, and the gates are one of a kind.

Mt. Katahdin. There's a spot with a huge clearing in the park, where you can lean up against a fence and get a great back round shot. Accept the mission and find it. I'll let you know if you got the shot.
Along the back roads, which is what most of Maine is, you can pass signs that say 'Pickled Crab and Lobster' 'Eggs' 'Bread'.

Made one stop to rent a movie, get some beer, and buy some ammo. That was in the same store, just to clarify.

Pretty good mongolian food there, and of course lobster out your ass.

Look up a place called Jimmy V's, and The Sea Dog. There's a railroad trestle near one of those places that I ran across in Tony Lamas. At night. I was loaded and I'd never do it again.

But you should try it.

Also, Old Booth Bay. A few hotels are right on the boardwalk there. I stood out in the surf around 1am playing my guitar after a good drunk in that town. Lot's of fun to be had there, Sage.

Lobsta Rolls. Ya!.

Don't say Lobster. Say Lobsta. Practice, you're gonna live there anyway.

Great place to visit!!!! I went once about 8 years ago with my best friend. Stayed on this island Chebeague Island, Maine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Loved every minute of it. Small town access only by ferry. Beautiful nature. There are thousands of small islands on the Maine coastline. We only had about 2 weeks so we got to visit a few. And yes the lobster is amazing. I remember buying it right off the docks and then my friends dad cooked it using local seaweed and lots of butter..... mmmmm Only time in my life I have every eaten lobster.

As for the greenery I don't know wasn't at the age of smoking it when I went. A Kayak would be a great thing for living in maine. I went in August and I thought the weather was great not as humid as I expected.

P.S Lots of wild blueberries..... I love blueberries I think we all do!!!

I was in southern Maine briefly, years ago. I was amazed that it looked just like the pictures you see. Cabins on the ocean front. Half were boarded up for the winter, the other half hadn't been done yet. Lots of big rocks. Hardly any beach. The ocean was unruly. Seafood was great. People were very nice. They talk funny. Real fast.

I would hate it. Way too cold for me. You will love it!
