Let's talk about work ethic and being #1

How do you feel about working hard and succeeding? Are you the type to give 110%? Do you aim to be the BEST at what you do? #1?

I ain't talkin about taking over the world here. I'm talkin about small victories. Clocking in and putting in work.

Or are you a slacker? (as I suspect many of you are)

I like to get motivation from my heros during times of pressure to perform. Guys like Hulk Hogan, Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson.... guys who set the standard for their profession; guys who broke records; guys who never gave up, even in hard times. Even if I'm just mopping the floor at work, there is a serious margin of success in that. Naw mean?

But I said I like to think like that...

If I'm completely honest with myself, I've always been more of a #2 kind of person. A runner up. Honorable mention. Silver medal. And I like it that way! I've always identified better with the people that come close to the Heros, but never quite claimed the number one spot. (Macho Man vs Hulk Hogan, Karl Malone vs Michael Jordan, etc). I find #2 more interesting and mysterious.

It's not that I don't have a very good work ethic. I certainly couldn't stand to be #3... fuckin bronze! Nobody gives a shit about #3. I will always work my ass off to be right behind #1.....

I don't know why I don't step it up one more notch and claim the title... I think it has something to do with not feeling like I'm the best example.

So basically I work really hard to be 2nd best.... does that make sense?

Ex-slacker, I definitely bust my ass nowadays compared to co-workers. There's one other guy who works as hard as i do but has 20 years more experience so I guess I default into the #2 spot.

But I love what I do.

the thing that sucks about work in general is that there are lots of things that are good about it- but then once you are working and experiencing things like having money, having responsibility, and feeling pride...etc... but then u have to do it fucking week in and week out until your 60... so the things that were the initial draws become like a burden in a lot of ways. work like human existence is definitely an imperfect thing. hell, thats why everybody wants to be "the boss" or an entrepreneur... so they can have all the perks of working but not the repetitive soul crushing drudgery...

I do what the fuck I say I'm going to do, and I'm careful to never say I'm going to do something I don't fully intend to do.

Except the time I said I'd make cards for the Yahookans. I totally got lazy and never bothered. I realized it would take many hours to do and was like, 'these guys are only gonna look at it once or twice, be like wow what a lot of effort he put into this... what a weird guy....'

^it doesn't have to be actual employment. it can be your social status or playing sports or your creativity.

Why is having money, responsibility, and pride week after week til i'm 60 a bad thing?

A job is needed to fuel your hobbies. Hopefully some of your hobbies can lead to more money.

I usually start strong at a job then gradually stop caring and get through by being likeable and witty rather than having a strong work ethic.

I think this happens to me in waves throughout my jobs. I'll go through phases where I'm too cool for school and then all of a sudden I become very protective of my position and I'll go above and beyond expectations so that I get the credit for my ability I think I deserve. Consistency is not my strong point. I'm more of a razzle dazzle kind of worker.

I know that there is nothing I can achieve or acquire that will give me any real or lasting happiness. You're either worried about getting there, or you're worried about losing it, and in the end, you lose it all. Better to focus on right now. It's all you have anyway.

I'd agree with 'acquire', but I completely disagree with 'achieve'.

I want to be known as a fast and efficient worker that is dependable. It's what I do and love. The repetitive nature of my job would drive most people nuts. I don't talk to people, and am just an ant that gets his work done fast.

So I'm #1 in that regard. #1 in terms of the totem pole? no way. I don't have leadership qualities.

Effort is irrelevant, results are everything. Optimisation is where its at.

i got a raise and a great review this past thursday. Good for my motherfucking work history. the job i am at now is completely for the work history and contacts/references for the future. Everybody there knows me as the guy who will come in early and stay late. as a dependable motherfucker. i did let them walk all over me the first few months, but not any more. fuck those cunts.

I was terrified of customers, but I have made them fall in love with me. I make highschool aged girls forget their bags/keys. I make grandmas cackle. I joke with the mexicans. And i let the assholes with their negativity just wash over me-does not matter.

And i do my best to do it with a smile/positive attitude. having a good attitude makes even my shit-eating, 25 cents above minimum wage, cut hours (to where even with the raise i'm still 40 bucks short of where i was per paycheck) job tolerable.

damn, i'm in a bad mood after that last paragraph.

but i can't sweat it. i have no real work history, i have to pay my dues.

i would make merc look the slacker. eat it merc.

yea but you have long hair so everyone assumes you're a slacker anyway.

^ this is very true

Everyone at my job assumes I'm a slacker until they get to know me better.

It's at that point they realize I'm far too proficient for my job, and although I do my job with the utmost precision, I'm still slacking.
