Fuck getting involved with the community

... or not. I dunno. I do kind of admire folks who really get around town and get involved with stuff. I don't know where they find the energy. Don't they have jobs?

About 3 blocks away from me there is this local movie theater that hosts an annual "local" film festival and it's pretty heavily promoted in the local news. I've known about it for a long time but I just can't bring myself to give a crap about it.

Then there is all the other stuff that go on locally, shit every week there is something to do (more or less). Festivals, markets, shows, meetings, etc, all revolving around the local community.

I know there are people out there who get around to these things and are really "in the know" about what is going on around this town. I do secretly admire them. Most of them are kind of locavore hippie types who wear those thick glasses and knit hats they made themselves... Or they're the city planners themselves, who all look and act like public school teachers.

Again, I don't know what I'm missing out on, but I ain't going to no local film festival.

I guess I consider being born and living here as an active contribution enough.

Dunno, some people just need a sense of belonging, others just like the gossip.

Out of interest, do you live in a big city or a small town?

Kind of cool that if it's a big city, periodically we get community events flyers posted through our door but I don't think they ever last very long, not many community minded folks where I live anymore.
People are way too self absorbed nowadays, myself included, I wish I wasn't but I just am. I'm sure I could change that if I really wanted to, but like you say it just doesn't seem important to me right now.

A local film festival would be cool though, our city always has film festivals, but it's pretty much film students from an uber exclusive arts college only, and quite frankly it strikes me as more self absorbed than I am.

I go to the heritage days festival we have here because it's like, hundreds of countries with different pavilions with stuff to check out and different foods you can buy from each country. It's a massive festival and there are so many people of all different ethnicities, it just feels really good to be there, and lots of awesome food.

I also go to the taste of edmonton thing we have here which is a whole bunch of restaurants that offer food.

I also go to the carnival we have here every year for the corndogs...

I'm starting to notice a trend here.

I love art and such so when they have roads shut down and all the local artists out with their work, there's nothing I love more than to chat people up. There's a lot of great elderly folk that have stories I'd pay to fuckin hear. Good shit.

I appreciate your honest, but i want to kick you in the dick. I long for some form of community, where I live there is nothing. No one gives a fuck about anything. and just for the record I wear thick framed glasses, and a knit hat only when its cold.... only when its cold

I fucking long for a sense of community like I had in my hometown. Just walking down the street was all honks and hollers. Anywhere I showed up I was a guest of honor. I did it all, art shows, open mics, community theater. I had strings everywhere.

I find that I do enough for the community just by lending myself to the scenery. I am definitely very visible around town because I do hit the streets on about a weekly basis. So if anyone out there was feeling out of touch with what it meant to be "a local" then all they would have to do is take a gander at me walkin down the street and they would know what a truely, effortlessly "in" person is like.

I guess in all honesty it was like, to repent for sins, to put in work while I'm young. And for the sense of reward actually, the fucking sense of reward was amazing. I would come out of that place on 4 hours sleep at 1AM feeling fucking blessed.

Good shit man.

I love hearing what people are doing to make a change and how/why they are doing it.

Cheers.

Practically deserves it's own 'Today Kicks Ass because' post.
