Frack You !

Fracking May Have Caused 50 Earthquakes in Oklahoma : TreeHugger

In a surprising turn of events, Cuadrilla Resources, a British energy company, recently admitted that its hydraulic fracturing operations "likely" caused an earthquake in England. Predictably, this news quickly sent a shockwave through the U.K., the oil and natural gas industries, and the environmental activist community. And it certainly feeds plenty of speculation that the same phenomenon could be occurring elsewhere.

Speculation that would be well-founded, evidently. Right on the heels of Cuadrilla's announcement, news is spreading that the United States Geological Survey has released a report (pdf) that links a series of earthquakes in Oklahoma last January to a fracking operation underway there. Evidently, a resident reported feeling some minor earthquakes, spurring the USGS to investigate. They found that some 50 small earthquakes had indeed been registered, ranging in magnitude from 1.0 to 2.8. The bulk of these occurred within 2.1 miles of Eola Field, a fracking operation in southern Garvin County.

The U.S.G.S. determined that "from the character of the seismic recordings indicate that they are both shallow and unique."

From the report:

Our analysis showed that shortly after hydraulic fracturing began small earthquakes started occurring, and more than 50 were identified, of which 43 were large enough to be located. Most of these earthquakes occurred within a 24 hour period after hydraulic fracturing operations had ceased. There have been previous cases where seismologists have suggested a link between hydraulic fracturing and earthquakes, but data was limited, so drawing a definitive conclusion was not possible for these cases.

The report is still under peer-review, and even then, the correlation between fracking and the quakes is inconclusive. The U.S.G.S. notes that region has historically been seismically active, though the summary states that the "strong correlation in time and space as well as a reasonable fit to a physical model suggest that there is a possibility these earthquakes were induced by hydraulic fracturing."

Needless to say, it's become much less far-fetched to presume that fracking has a serious impact on seismic activity. And so, yet another reason emerges to be wary of the secretive processes that underly the nation's most controversial gas-extraction process: Fracking earthquakes.

Todays earthquake in Oklahoma (4.5) may also have been caused by hydraulic fracturing.

11/5/2011 — 4.7 magnitude earthquake in Oklahoma — Fracking the cause?! |

Today, November 5 2011 , approx 230am CDT — there was a 4.7 magnitude earthquake in central Oklahoma.

As it turns out, yet once again, we see the epicenter VERY close to what looks like some kind of drilling site.

5.6 quake hits central Okla. after earlier shakers - US news - Life - msnbc.com

5.6 earthquake hits central Oklahoma after earlier shakers
Tremor is felt across wide area; chimneys, walls collapse; roads buckle

OKLAHOMA CITY — A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook central Oklahoma late Saturday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Emergency management officials in Lincoln County were reporting significant damage, NBC station KJRH of Tulsa reported.

Chimneys collapsed through roofs of homes, KJRH reported. Damage to the Prague library included collapsed air conditioning ducts and a collapsed wall.

Several roadways have buckled, including Highway 62 and other county roads, KJRH said.

There has been no word on any injuries reported.

If the magnitude is confirmed, it would be the strongest earthquake ever recorded in the state, The Weather Channel said.

The quake was shallow at 3.1 miles deep and occurred at 10:53 p.m. Central Daylight Time, the USGS said. It was centered about four miles east of the city of Sparks in Lincoln County, or about 45 miles east of Oklahoma City.

Map Centered at 37°N, 95°W

A USGS spokesman told NBC News that callers from Kansas, Arizona, Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma were reporting that they had felt the quake. The USGS had not gotten any initial reports of major damage.

People posted on Twitter that they felt the earthquake as far away as Kansas City, St. Louis, and Wylie, Texas.

“The picture by the TV fell off the wall and we jumped up because we thought somebody had hit the house,” Noeh Morales of Oklahoma City told NewsOK.com.

The quake came after at least three earthquakes shook much of the same area early Saturday.

A 4.7 magnitude quake struck at 2:12 a.m. (3:12 a.m. ET), with an epicenter about six miles north of Prague in southern Lincoln County, the USGS reported on its website. That is about 50 miles east of Oklahoma City.

The USGS said a 3.4 magnitude quake was also recorded at 2:27 a.m. and a 2.7 magnitude quake at 2:44 a.m.

People felt rumbling as far away as Oklahoma City, Tulsa and outside of the state in Wichita, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo., NewsOK reported.

"We have a solid house on a slab, and it felt like it was coming apart," Joe Bill Moad, who lives west of Oklahoma City in Yukon, told the newspaper.

Lincoln County sheriff officials said there have been no reports of injuries but several people reported items falling off walls.

Oklahoma City police officials said they have received several 911 calls, but have no reports of injuries or damage.

The largest previously recorded earthquake to strike Oklahoma was a 5.5 magnitude temblor centered in El Reno on April 9, 1952, according to the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

it's oil/natural gas fracking .

and not total speculation.

I was playing with earthquake 3d.

not to imply what you're saying.

However some are indeed caused by hydraulic fracturing.

It's the ones located near fracking sites.

not the ones in california ( where no fracking is being done, nor the "ring of fire" where no fracking is done, nor the coast of alaska where no fracking is done, But rather the rare ones like in england, canada, and the east coast of america, where it is being done.

Goddamn it fracking makes me mad. I really want to rant and rave right now, but I'm struggling to keep my eyes open at the moment so I bid you adieu for now.

P.S. I'm not some asshole who saw gasland and decided I know shit about fracking dammnit I spent all last year researching and writing about it. Just had to be said as that film is going to cause more harm than good in the long run.

Much of that film was dramatized and manipulated in order to prove a point. So in essence it is arming people with half truths and evidence that can be refuted by the other side. Things like this play right into the hands of the camp of people that like to say that environmental issues are fabrications of the liberal media. It allows the people that would speak out against something like fracking to be made to look foolish.

I'll take a few minor quakes if it means the economy doesn't collapse. oil is good for that.

drilling for oil is a very great and human endeavor. i hope we suck out and burn every ounce of oil on this planet, all for out own comforts and i hope that people get very rich from it. that is what we deserve.

lol they drill for oil under like a mile and a half of ice in the arctic.

What happens when a spill like what just recently happened in the gulf of mexico happens there?

The economy is rigged anyway. needs a change

Shit is probably gonna crash and burn on its own within our own lifetimes anyway...

Its just sad to know that when the last drop of oil is used up and the last tree falls we will just switch to all the alternative resources that people are trying to push for now.

actually fracking caused more than 30 earthquakes in oklahoma over a three day period

of at least 3.0 magnitude , which historically is not normal for that area.
