How might one go about deciding on a career trade?
How does a man decide what trade to go into?
Should it be: -Based on his personality, a trade that is typically suited for someone of a certain mental and physical disposition -Based on his location, something that would benefit the community and that there is a strong local demand for -Based on his previous experience, capitalizing on work that he already has a history of -Based on hopes and dreams, choosing a job that he assumes would be wonderful and glamorous for him to live -Based on subtle indications, like opportunities knocking, "signs", horoscopes, dumb luck How do you decide what to do? |

If you've got something you love to do, then go that route. Otherwise, most of us just sort of fall into whatever it is we call a career. Life has a way of working that way. One thing leads to another.

We live in a capatalist society. You do the easiest work u can for the most money possible. And dont worry about how that effects the world around you. Just keep showing up to work and consuming.

Thats not advice son, thats how the world works
It would be awesome to live in a world where everyone got to do what they wanted to do for a living. A world where u get up and dont dread going to work all day. But mostly that only applies to people who are already born into wealth OR get lucky in some way. Youve gotta play the system or it will play u. Find a cushy govt job and be as incompetent as possible like the rest of the sheep. Hard work is for poor and dumb people, work smart. THAT is my advice. In our society it is very easy to just "work for the money". For some people that philosophy is very rewarding. It also can be costly in other ways. When I worked at Schwab, I saw a few people that lost sight of their priorities because they were so concerned about trading their accounts. Some lost their jobs over it, and found out they had bigger problems with the SEC for trade violations. Having the money to have the car, to project the "Wall Street" image in Denver. They were all in a daze when lay offs were handed out. I knew people who came from other firms who told me about their co-workers who drank excessively. "I could go back to Merrill and make more, but I'd also be a raging alcoholic" is the quote that always comes to mind. Of course, ideally, making the money and using it to do something you love is the scenario everyone would like to execute. |

Don't know if this was intentional, but it's a good little nugget of advice.
I have actually found that I fare better in the job world when I pretend (and I can only pretend) to be a mindless, non-threatening drone with little ability to think for myself... I just try to keep quiet and look as retarded as possible in my interviews... because the moment I fuck up is when I open my mouth and establish some individuality and ability to think for myself, then they stamp a big fat REJECTED on my forehead. |

So this kinda rules out opportunity as a good reason to choose a trade. I would also agree with it. I think that being an "opportunist" can be somewhat of a.... uh shit i forgot the word... good and/or bad person.

I think you should work on finding a passion in life before you work on finding a career. After that the career will fall naturally into place.
i lucked out and found something pretty early that i absolutely love, that i can go to school for, and probably end up with a career out of it. Id think you would ALWAYS feel as though "something is missing" if you just go the work for money route. so to answer your question, How does one go about looking for a career? Pursue your dreams, and HOPE a career comes from it.
