Do you make provisions for the poor and needy?

The bell ringers and the grocery store cashiers are in full force now, asking for donations for the poor and destitute.

I go to the same Safeway every week and I seem to end up with the same cashier every time and she always asks me if I'd like to round up my total and give the change to some charity. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

And I've run into a few girls ringing bells for the Salvation Army. They must know that I can't resist any interaction with cute girls. I drop 'em a quarter.

I admit, I am a sucker for charity. I bet I've been nickeled and dimed for hundereds of dollars over the years for various charity boxes.

As of late I am the needy...

Granted I am much better off than some, not as good as others, I think my contribution will be looking out for me and mine so no one else has to.

I'm pretty generous with charity of opportunity, so long as it meets my criteria. I give to help the hungry, abused, and so on, but not so much to find cures for cancer and such. I'm more about immediate relief than hope, I guess. I give to bell ringers (more than a quarter, stinge), people asking for money for the homeless shelter, the hunger projects through the supermarket and stuff like that. I'd like to do more, actually; maybe get a job in that direction.

I always do the donation thing. I also am a sucker for a cute girl. I do the write your name on hearts or whatever @ bars and gas stations. I drop a buck in the fire dept. boots when they are on the road collecting. Hell I support the state troopers too. I do when I'm not broke @least

the salvation army (bell ringers) are such a good cause, like when they threatened to shut down all their soup kitchens in new york if they had to provide benefits to same sex partners. good people, good people.....

I donate to anything that has to do with feeding or clothing the poor. Xil, now I feel like a bad person for emptying my wallet of change for the Salvation Army.

well, to be fair, they do ALOT of good for the homeless and hungry. what it boils down to is they are a charitable church not a simple charity.

dont feel bad brother, i've given to them before too. i've also shopped and donated to salvation army thrift stores, as they are the only thrift stores in my area and really a saving grace for many poor families (of which their are many in my town). all i was really trying to get at it that things arent always black and white.

they've got the love thy neighbor and tzedeka down, they just havent yet grasped the love is love is love (regardless of gender) idea yet

edit: another pont i was trying to make is that you should research your charity before donating. some places your donation is going mostly towards administrative costs, others its going mostly towards effecting policy, others research (as rev mentioned), and still others it translates to actual physical aid like food and clothing

edit2: i think this article does a decent job of covering the salvation army issue in a balanced way.

good thread. I give then I can. I used to volunteer all the time, but if your not in a big city its kind of hard to find a good organization. I started a thread a while ago about how hard it can be to find an organization that wants your help.
I always donate to the girls scouts!

The only charity I give to is handing the money directly to someone. If they buy a bottle or a rock, I made their day regardless.

Me too. If you include the money I give to beggars as well as the established charities, I'm sure I've given well over a thousand dollars out of my own hand.

I always ask the begger what are they going to spend the money on. If they say a 40, I thank them for being honest and give them some change.
