I find it extremely hard to believe that there isn't some kind of "kill" software embedded to wipe out any information that could be compromised should something like this happen. However, it wouldn't protect the airframe and the mechanical assembly of the the plane itself.
That being said, I would absolutely believe that the drone was lost in airspace it was not supposed to be in. I also understand "Skygrabber" has been previously reported as being used to intercept video feeds. |

The big deal with this is that Iran has "allegedly" hacked control, which means they've (supposedly) found a way to get past the incredibly advanced data encryption used to remotely fly the drone - essentially meaning they could be privy to the military networks used by Nato forces, basically getting access to snoop into communication chatter, and observation feeds, as well as god knows what else. My two cents is that it's been physically shot down, and the hacking thing's propaganda designed to put the shits up people. Either way, the Iranian's should be more worried that they kept this thing in an orbit passing directly over them for a good few months. Conventional drones should be the least of their worries. ![]()

TEHRAN, Iran — A U.S. official said Sunday that Washington had no indication that a drone that had crashed in Iran had actually been shot down.
In Tehran, state television quoted a military source as saying that Iran's military had shot down a U.S. reconnaissance drone aircraft in eastern Iran. "There is absolutely no indication up to this point that Iranians shot down this drone," the official told NBC News. The NATO-led force in Afghanistan said the drone the Iranians claim to have shot down may be an unarmed surveillance drone that was lost last week while flying over western Afghanistan. A surveillance drone flying over western Afghanistan had gone out of control late last week and may be the one Iran said it had shot down over its own airspace, the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Sunday. "The UAV to which the Iranians are referring may be a U.S. unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week. The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status," an ISAF statement said. The statement about the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was issued in Kabul and released to reporters covering an international conference on Afghanistan in the German city Bonn. Iran's armed forces have shot down an unmanned U.S. spy plane that violated Iranian airspace along the country's eastern border, the official IRNA news agency reported Sunday. Iran is locked in a dispute with the U.S. and its allies over Tehran's disputed nuclear program, which the West believes is aimed at developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies the accusations, saying its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that it seeks to generate electricity and produce isotopes to treat medical patients. The type of aircraft Iran says it downed, an RQ-170 Sentinel, is made by Lockheed Martin and was reportedly used to keep watch on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan as the raid that killed him was taking place earlier this year. The surveillance aircraft is equipped with stealth technology, but the U.S. Air Force has not made public any specifics about the drone. Iran said in January that two pilotless spy planes it had shot down over its airspace were operated by the United States and offered to put them on public display. The Islamic Republic holds frequent military drills, primarily to assert an ability to defend against a potential U.S. or Israeli attack on its nuclear facilities. Tehran has focused part of its military strategy on producing drones for reconnaissance and attacking purposes. Iran announced three years ago it had built an unmanned aircraft with a range of more than 600 miles (1,000 kilometers), far enough to reach Israel. Ahmadinejad unveiled Iran's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft in August 2010, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies. ----------------------------------------------------------------- artist depiction of The RQ-170

The RQ-170 has a flying wing design containing a single (as yet unknown) engine and is estimated by Aviation Week as being approximately 66 feet in wingspan.[10] Its takeoff weight is estimated as being greater than the RQ-3 DarkStar's, which was 8,500 pounds. The design lacks several elements common to stealth engineering, namely notched landing gear doors and sharp leading edges. It has a curved wing planform, and the exhaust is not shielded by the wing.[10] Aviation Week postulates that these elements suggest the designers have avoided 'highly sensitive technologies' due to the near certainty of eventual operational loss inherent with a single engine design and a desire to avoid the risk of compromising leading edge technology.[10] The publication also suggests that the medium-grey color implies a mid-altitude ceiling, unlikely to exceed 50,000 feet since a higher ceiling would normally be painted darker for best concealment.[10] The postulated weight and ceiling parameters suggests the possible use of a General Electric TF34 engine or a variant in the airframe.[10]
On the basis of the few publicly-available photographs of the RQ-170, aviation expert Bill Sweetman has assessed that the UAV is equipped with an electro-optical/infrared sensor and possibly an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar mounted in its belly fairing. He has also speculated that the two fairings over the UAV's wings may house datalinks and that the belly and above wing fairings could be designed for modular payloads, allowing the UAV to be used for strike missions and electronic warfare.[11]

Extreme ways are back again
Extreme places I didn't know I broke everything new again Everything that I'd owned I threw it out the windows, came along Extreme ways I know move apart The colors of my sea Perfect color me Extreme ways that help me That help me out late at night Extreme places I had gone But never seen any light Dirty basements, dirty noise Dirty places coming through Extreme worlds alone Did you ever like it planned? I would stand in line for this There's always room in life for this Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Like it always does, always does Extreme songs that told me They helped me down every night I didn't have much to say I didn't get above the light I closed my eyes and closed myself And closed my world and never opened Up to anything That could get me along I had to close down everything I had to close down my mind Too many things to cover me Too much can make me blind I've seen so much in so many places So many heartaches, so many faces So many dirty things You couldn't even believe I would stand in line for this It's always good in life for this Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby Like it always does, always does © THE LITTLE IDIOT MUSIC; WARNER-TAMERLANE PUBLISHING CORP;

I'm just skeptical because Iran has made these kinds of claims before and then backtracked from them. Maybe they did, but more evidence than a blurb on Iranian State News would be nice.

Since Politics is now under the same hood as FFA, could I ask:
Can't this and the Ron Paul threads... or anything political now go into that forum instead of the random, don't know where to put this?, FFA? Politics is just a more categorically specific FFA now as far as I'm concerned. Just sayin'
