Some Hondas (for instance) are made in the US or Brazil or the UK.

Any car you take care of will last a good, long time. I picked up a Jeep Cherokee with 170K for $1600 that I have needed to put no money in for it to function properly. Yeah it could use a new suspension, the steering gear is on the way out and it could use some new seals...But the point is that deals are out there and the difference of domestic or foreign cars can't guarantee you a reliable car that won't need a lot of upkeep. Lower miles indicates how much abuse a vehicle has been subjected to, but isn't the end all.

How's your credit score?

Good on ya for joining a credit union, hell their website could probably tell you your score, mine does. If it's good, don't be afraid to shoot for a higher loan or shorter term. If you know you got a somewhat steady paycheck coming in for a while, making regular payments will improve and/or keep your score high with the history you build up.

After a year or so of building credit scores, with a credit union you can usually refinance the loan at way better rates.

If you're buying privately def ask for a test drive and take it to a local mechanic that gives free estimates. Coming back with the report will help you haggle down the price as well as obviously alerting you to any work that needs to be done. If the car owner bitches about test driving, leave your car keys as collateral [if you have a shitty looking car, try not to park in visible range].

As for cars, i'd shy away from American late 90's to about 2008. The newer the better, them autos are making leaps and bounds in the last few years.

I was awared that american cars after 77 tend to suck. This was from a true redneck too.

I have decided that I'm going to try to find a toyota truck. Hopefully I can find one around tax season.

just got a 2009 Kia Rio $9300, less than 30K on the clock. Very happy.

Good call on the toyota. They can be hard to find at a good price though even if they have tons of miles.

I drive a 97 ranger i picked up from a dude that just used it to pick up deliveries for his business from the airport. Had always been taken good care of and had a little under 100,000 miles on it(all highway). Dropped $3,000 on it and 3 years later I've driven it all over the country without a problem. Reliable as fuck.

we have the v6 so it's pretty hard on gas. it drives very nice - the tranny is smooth (auto) and steering is pretty tight for a truck, (admittedly i don't have a lot of experience with trucks; seems much better than i feared) the seats are very comfortable, sit high up, and have very few blind spots. pretty plain interior even the TRD. decent sound system. it seems bigger than most mid sized trucks and there is a lot of room in the back. (we got the extended cab) The reliability aspect holds true to a toyota as does the re-sale value. it's a solid choice. also they are sexy as fuck.
