I stick all of my little cousins broken crayon bits into silicone molds and zap em in the oven for a bit = rainbow crayons. Have hearts and other holiday/theme shapes, etc. Don't understand all these gooftroop crayola contraptions that will have your kids melting crayons into your carpets. donotwant

its not too hard, basically you just add your melted fats/oils (in my case I use all vegetable oils; coconut, palm, olive, avacado, and castor oil, plus shea butter) to sodium hydroxide (lye), you mixed them up really good using a stick blender and you put it in a mold with no additional heating. you have to make sure you mix it up really good and allow it sufficient time for all the naoh to react with the oils (the chemical reaction is called saponification). after 24 hours I usually can take the loaf of soap out of my mold and then i cut bars out of it and then i let them dry for at least a couple months so that excess water evaporates and the bars get good and hard.

alternatively in the hot process soap method you use a heating element to heat up the mixture when you combine the oils and the base, which ensures a full reaction of all the base but i think it is unnecessary and doesn't make soap with quite as nice of a consistency as cold process. in the world of soap making, cold process soap is considered more "artisan".

i have only used my own homemade soap for about 2 years now, i love it and would never go back to using regular. all the supplies cost me about 300$ and I have made 100's of bars so far and still have oils enough for many 100's more, i like giving them away as gifts to friends, occasionally people have even given me money for them. i love having the control of whats in it, so there is nothing that is harsh on the skin, i used to get really bad dry skin from using irish spring soap but now i never have that problem. its really fun to experiment with new oils and try different recipes and then you make a product that is really awesome and useful...
