Boost to my local economy

Groundbreaking marks first step to building massive space plane - latimes.com

Quote:
Seattle billionaire Paul Allen’s outsized ambitions are getting a boost with the Mojave Desert groundbreaking of a hangar facility to build the world’s largest airplane powered by six jet engines.

Huntsville, Ala.-based Stratolaunch Systems Inc., the new commercial space venture unveiled last month by Allen and aerospace pioneer Burt Rutan, will build the airplane to lift a rocket ship to a high altitude. Once there, the rocket ship would separate from the carrier aircraft, then engage its rocket engines for its climb into space.

The plane will be built at the Mojave Air & Space Port, where the venture, bankrolled by Allen, is starting work on a building that will house an 88,000-square-foot factory floor where carrier aircraft wing assemblies and associated parts will be built. It's slated to be finished later this year.

Later Stratolaunch will embark on constructing a 92,640-square-foot hangar. It will serve as the aircraft assembly and test facility and will include 20,250 square foot of office space. The hangar is expected to be ready by mid-2013.

In a statement from last weekend’s groundbreaking, Gary Wentz, Stratolaunch's chief executive, said, “Today marks the start of an exciting journey for us. Over the next year, we will have a visible presence in the Antelope Valley with two new facilities and a pair of 747-400 aircraft which will undergo salvage to supply parts and subsystems for integration into our carrier aircraft. ”
i was only going to stay in rosamond a year or so....
but between all the space shit going on here (theres other space missions launching from and landing here I believe) and edwards AFB, this economy is looking good in the long run. I think I'm going to stay in my house (renting with option to buy - fuck yeah)

That's awesome man. I'm a total scifi nerd and honestly believe space is where we have to go next to evolve as a species.

Considering I've already wanted to fund NASA regardless of my political affliction and my desperate attempts to educate America, JFK has proven i should look elsewehere and whom everi can convince.

Please prove me otherwise, jfk.

Good for you.

Just a couple of months ago, you sounded like "Abandon hope all ye who enter here."

You just needed a little change.

Wow, a whole new opportunity for illegals to work in California maing!

I'd love to think it'll be built with hard working American labor union members but you know it'll be contracted out to a zillion subs and well, you can't expect the contractor to make sure all of the subs are using legit labor now can you.

At least they won't have to go far when it's time to instigate the 'desert health care plan' when someone gets hurt or killed.

I could be wrong though, after all, I'm not sure Mojave has a Home Depot.

either way, taxes will be coming out of the paycheck, so i don't give a fuck. any business that wants to move in - hiring legal or not - will help the local economy

way too much dialoge in the first half of it, then the violence was good, then the ending which was interesting, but still sucked.

Girl With the Dragon Tattoo...much better recommendation.
back to the thread...

Mitt says Obama is out of touch, but Newt boasts, he's gonna build a freakin moon base, like it's something we really need .

How about some infrastructure jobs, a better faster internet, better teachers, and more of them before we go wasting money on Buck Rodgers fantasies.

can you say "pork barrel spending".

how about "earmarks"

wasting federal funds on bullshit the population really doesn't need, is why America will be in debt for the next twenty years.

Just have Obama swing that pipeline form Canada your way. Plenty of "make work" jobs there.

No I'm not against everything, just foolish investments.

Some guy thinking he can start from scratch and out build all the major air liner manufacturers in the world...on his own dollar ?

Yea , It'll end up being a write off.

I give him credit for having balls, but I'll believe it when it happens.

Have you bought you ticket to space yet ?

No, you are anti- everything.

How can you be 100% positive it'll be a write off? Speculating is ridiculous, and turning this thread into politics is retarded. Get over it. Try and not be so pessimistic for once, it might feel nice

yep, he probably should have thought it through a little better.

How about a jet that can carry twice the passengers using half the fuel of a 787
or A380.

like this

http://www.wired.com/autopia/2010/06...h-jet-engines/

Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers recently released a concept aircraft design that could use 70 percent less fuel than current commercial airliners. The simple secret, they say: Optimize the aircraft for modern, efficient jet engines.

which your taxes most likely helped design.

Keyword: Concept.

Is it actually practical and cost efficient? After all, the airlines ARE businesses.

With that said, I agree with you on the spending on shit we don't need. That's paranoia for you.

...and they say the cold war is over...

lol.

Yea not for you.

I don't mean that as an insult, but you consider Law Abiding Citizen a great movie so just saying, not for you. You'd probably like Dead Man's Shoes better, it's straightforward and quite violent.

And this planet is fucked so NASA may be our only salvation, we better get to exploring before the Chinese pwn us completely in the next space race.
