Does Religion define you? Does it dictate your actions? Why or why not?

Do tell. I'm curious, YaHooka.

it doesnt define me, but i was raised in a good family, as a catholic, so i did retain alot of the values that i was taught as a child. so i guess it does, in some way, dictate my actions.

that said, i was up all night having premarital sex, while drinking in excess.

is it because of the word of god, or because you don't take the bible seriously and just roll with the flow of being a good person?

i kinda feel that i dont need to fear some omnipotent force to act in an upstanding manner. i feel bad when i do bad things, so i try and do things that dont make me feel bad.

i dont take the bible too seriously, but i have studied it in the past. i think alot of the lessons in there are good, but i dont go for some of the fundamental aspects of christianity.

apart from the common knowledge of being kind to others... that is to say from what i'm understanding, few and far between in the bible, that message, being kind to one another; what did you really learn from the bible? what did you gain from your studies?

Does Religion define you?

no

Does it dictate your actions?

redundant question, obviously If it doesn't define one, it doesn't dictate their actions. IMHO.

Why or why not? It would be like trying to live your life according to alice in wonderland. (or any other fictional story).

I usually try to live within the law, and that's good enough for me.

That's an interesting question, because I would say "Yes, very much." However, I have come to my religious belief through a great deal of personal exploration and questioning of assumptions, so in some ways, the answer is "No, I follow my own judgement in determining my actions and choices." But now, my religious (or spiritual, if you prefer) beliefs are aligned with Ch'an Buddhism, so I tend to follow (or try to follow) the guidance of Buddhist ideals and precepts, so the answer becomes, "Yes, I am a devout Buddhist and live my life accordingly."

The Buddha himself warned to take as fact only that which you, yourself judged to be true, and not because of dogma, or the reputation or status of the person teaching you. I think the light of this teaching really makes clear how I can be a devout follower, and a questioner of the teachings I follow.

basically the parts i took away from the bible, were kindness and respect for other people. i think i learned to treat others in a way that id want to be treated.

i cant remember the exact part of the bible, but i remember reading about not borrowing or lending money because it creates tension between people.

stuff like that

how's your credit report/score look without credit cards ?

I'm waiting for my (free) one from all three agencies. Should be amusing as I haven't financed anything for over 20 years.

One is required for a new apt. I'm looking at .(the assholes said there's a 35 dollar fee to get one) Veterans get a free report every year, I'm told anyone can get an annual report for free , but I'm not sure about that.

you mean worse than bad credit, and yes you would be correct.

Everyone says the best thing to do is cut your cards in half, problem is that unless you owe money to someone you basically have no "credit".

no credit is worse, but that's not limited to credit cards.

and yes, everyone by law can receive one free credit report for free.

Doesn't it seem completely natural, in today's world, that a discussion of the role of religion in your life would quickly turn to a discussion of money and credit?

and this is why: religion is a doctrine that controls large amounts of people for it's own purposes whereas money & credit is what you need to survive. money and credit is not all that different from religion.

edit to add: except religion isn't something you need to survive. that's the biggest difference.
