CNN's Sanjay Gupta comes out in favor of pot

Watch Dr. Sanjay Gupta's groundbreaking documentary "WEED" at 8 p.m. ET August 11 on CNN.

(CNN) -- Over the last year, I have been working on a new documentary called "Weed." The title "Weed" may sound cavalier, but the content is not.

I traveled around the world to interview medical leaders, experts, growers and patients. I spoke candidly to them, asking tough questions. What I found was stunning.

Long before I began this project, I had steadily reviewed the scientific literature on medical marijuana from the United States and thought it was fairly unimpressive. Reading these papers five years ago, it was hard to make a case for medicinal marijuana. I even wrote about this in a TIME magazine article, back in 2009, titled "Why I would Vote No on Pot."

Well, I am here to apologize.

Most frightening to me is that someone dies in the United States every 19 minutes from a prescription drug overdose, mostly accidental. Every 19 minutes. It is a horrifying statistic. As much as I searched, I could not find a documented case of death from marijuana overdose

Great read.

Montel Williams got my mom to change her opinion on medicinal marijuana, which I thought would be impossible. But he did it.

if marijuana has demonstrable medical benefits then it shouldn't be listed as a schedule 1 drug...somebody ought to fix that pronto

the scheduling of weed as a level 1 drug was preposterous from the start. they just dint want hemp to take over cotton and the paper industry.

i watched the show...the guy is kinda a dork...but shit man lots of people watch him and it was awesome to see somebody stepping up

What was he reading 5 years ago that convinced him that marijuana had no medicinal value? I took college courses in the 70's that extolled marijuana's medicinal value.

he does come off as somewhat dense to say the least. he also explains "the addictive quality of weed" which is mental.

Go through a drug your body wants (opiates, benzos, alcohol etc) and watch what happens...very different than just wanting a high

I think its important that large public bodies are featuring pro-cannabis opinions at all. People like us can work to correct the errors they put out, but its a lot harder to get folks like MIB's mother to change her mind. So good on Gupta, I say.

It's interesting.

Growing Med. MJ was recently banned in Canada (after being sold by prescrip. & homegrown for a few yrs) because govt saw higher useage than anticipated.

Arguments in favour of the ban trumpeted "unknown affects of the drug" and "ethics" for pharmacists handing out a hallucinogen.
What a load of shit. Because big Pharm is so transparent and so safe (/sarcasm). For bloody hell.

They insult our intelligence and then enforce it with belligerent power tripping officers. So very civilized, so very democratic. Rah rah.

When my parents were my age, they had no idea about drugs whatsoever. They believed what the media told them (which was batshit crazy by today's propaganda standards), and that was it. The internet is the real game changer, here. Now, many people my age are very clear on how ridiculous the propaganda is, and see the game behind the lies for what it actually is. When most of you are my age, it will be taken completely for granted that things are not as they appear, and it might be possible that lies and propaganda stop working entirely on large segments of the population.

The pot battle is exactly as retarded as one should expect. It's a battle between bullshit that many people believe to be true, and the truth itself, which many people believe to be bullshit. That many of us don't have permanent palm prints on our face is miraculous. But from the larger perspective, it's a pretty amazing thing we're witnessing.

Rev, that's very true.
I wonder what will happen with legislation in the future. Do you all think that it will be subjected to public opinion more? More democratic?
Or will there be a monopoly on information?

Interesting questions.

Any monopoly on information pretty much ended with Gutenberg. Information's power to be free has only grown since then. As for legalization, it will come one day, without much of a fight, kinda like the end of Prohibition. Future generations will look at us funny when we say it was illegal, and wonder why alcohol was okay, tho. They'll probably think we were a little nuts, kinda like we think that people who thought blacks were better off as slaves because they were a child-like race of monkey-men were kinda crazy.
