you could easily get a warehouse job SOK, and 90% of the people doing grunt work there have shit resumes. Places like that usually have a super high turnover rate as well.

Nor is anyone getting hired out of sympathy? what kind of delusional shit is that. That doesnt happen anywhere.

Go on craigslist and check the manufacturing job section. There are ample listings. Make up a BS resume and just say you've been landscaping for the past few years.
Add some shit like "extremely willing to work, confident i can handle anything you throw at me, fast learner, detail oriented," etc etc. The shit they want to here.
You dont need a professional resume for a 9-11 dollar an hour job. Just a simple page like that is totally fine. Just give them enough to show you arent a complete moron and can put together a 1 page resume (or in your case pretend).

I guarantee they WOULD actually hire you, if you actually gave the tiniest effort.
And dude you victim rap is so fucking weak. You are a young white male. You have an infinite lead on everyone else going for that same job. Most people going for the job likely barely speak english for fucks sake.

Yeah, I remember my grandfather was a conductor for the Pennsylvania RR. He made the NYC to Washington, D.C. trip. He said he'd have a few hour layover in D.C. & would catch a silent movie back then. RR pensions are 1 of the best.

Those days are history.

I specifically seek out new hires based on personality over experience.

The owner of the company told my buddy and I that he hears lots of good things through the grapevine and said specifically me, and told me again like 4 or 5 times throughout the day (since we had a company meeting and I had to stop back through the office later in the day).

Both of us had 0 experience in this field when we started, and now we're among the best installers they've ever had. It's about the work you're willing to put in. To me it's like a game and I'm constantly trying to beat my high score, gain exp and level up. Just over 5 years ago I was a scumbag in NY looking at a judge wondering if i'd be getting 1-15 in prison. Decided I never wanted to be in that place again, and here I am today, one of the top people in my field in my region.

It's about determination, and for me it was also about knowing what I don't want to be more than anything else. Couldn't leave NYS for one year and now I could move to just about anywhere on earth and be guaranteed employment.

I must be doing something wrong. Looking in the wrong places (I check CL and never see anything in manufacturing section with warehouse jobs that don't want experience). In fact a lot of CL postings are aggressive, saying shit like 'Do NOT apply if you don't have at least 5 yrs experience'.

It's about being in the right place at the right time and saying the right things, knowing the right people to refer you. If I could ever get hired, then what you guys say applies. I do work hard.

I am in a bad place to find this or probably any kind of work, but what I can't figure out is why shit was so bad in MN and even worse in TN. The last time I aggressively pursued retail work was TN. Box stores, restaurants, etc. I've applied to roughly 400 places without a single hire since 2011. I've called back to maybe 30% of them. Run around every time.

It's such a pain in the ass. But its also job security.
They pay the HVAC guys here over 40$ an hour. The whole city is being updated and jobs are booked up to a year in advance to guarantee manpower.

It's a numbers game. That's all. The rejection and runaround are really discouraging, and they can make you start questioning yourself. Try not to fall into that, and just focus on working the process. You just have to keep sending in resumes/applications until you get something. That's all it is.

Excellent accomplishment, Geeno. You should be very proud of yourself, my friend. Not an easy task. Like Slunt mentioned, if you went back up North, I'll bet the pay would be substantially more.

When I moved to NC from Denver in the mid 1980s, my good buddy (who came with me) was a pipe-fitter. He applied for work at numerous places down here & was only offered $10-$12 / hr. He moved back to Chicago, where both of us were originally from, but relocated to Denver. Landed a Union job & was making $37 / hr.
He went to night school to get his Apprentice license, then his Master's license & is now retired with 1 helluva pension.

Once again, nice going Geeno!

Yeah it does. An older hiring manager (more common) is more likely to hire rev than me, because they relate to him more.

It's actually a turnoff to them that I'm more qualified. They don't want someone outperforming them... My lack of solid history makes this usually subconscious discrimination easier to carry out.

Well done, Turm. Hopefully, I can make the same claim soon, too. I'm trying to put in more time on it. I find that when I start to get focused, and put in the time, new opportunities arise.

It's nice to hear about everyone doing so well. I found Geeno's story especially inspiring. Well done, dude. I can't wait for SoK to post his next success. I'm going to be a happy old man that day. That guy deserves a break, and could use some success in life (not that we all couldn't)

My 4 1/2 hr. commute forced my hand, I had to buy a small car to travel. Found an on line dealer, made a couple emails, talked on the phone on my ride home Friday, they delivered it to my house this afternoon, from Maine to NY. It's a 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS. Good on Gas and I can fit me and my partners gear for the week in it.
Home Friday night at 9, leave Sunday night at 9. Not much of a weekend for the next couple years, but I got it good at work so I can't complain.

Provincial govt. just legislated that all of our job sites must have a ticketed job lead-hand to run the site.
Right now both my partner and I have A Class tickets and are booked 2 years ahead of time for jobs. We are an awesome team and play off each others strengths. He's electrical , I'm mechanical
They are going to split us up to run 2 different sites and pay me an extra 1.70 per hour lead rate.
Fuckers...For less than 14$ a day they are going to ruin my sweet deal and make me responsible for logistics and safety of other workers. if I'm going to run a job I might as well go union which pays an extra 11$ per hour to be the boss.

If you are unemployed then you have time for upgrading your skill set.
A first aid course is useful and opens many doors, as does a forklift certification (3 days) course.
There is a get a job thread lurking about somewhere with some useful info in it.
