How do people survive today???

Sitting here in Vancouver where the average price of a tarpaper shit shack is now over a million bucks. My sons generation will never know the joys of home ownership. the vacancy rates are around 1 to 2 per cent and the rents average 1500-2000$ per month.
He has 2 kids and can't find any place to live. His commute to work is about 60 kms(35 miles) and every penny he earns goes to rent/ gas/ food.
How the fuck is any body going to succeed in todays world?

Trailers are a good option. You can buy a decent one for around ten grand then the only rent you have to pay is a minimal lot rent fee to the park.

Yeah the boomers kinda took the money and destroyed the environment and job market...

Not saying any of you older folks here, but as a generation as a whole our parents really kinda left us without much to work with.

I remember getting a two bedroom apartment for $575 a month, and living really well by myself. Since the last housing boom/bust rents have shot up, food prices have shot up, in fact the price of everything save my labor has increased significantly since then. I pay twice as much for a single-wide in the ghetto, now, than I did for a two bedroom place in a nice neighborhood then.

I'm not quite a baby boomer but I know I've lived a life of complete luxury at the expense of anyone younger than me and take full credit for any misery any of you might suffer as a result of said life of luxury.

Having a system that requires more debt than there is money to pay it doesn't help.

There are more families not making it or living off credit cards. Homelessness is higher than ever before. the jobs are being farmed out and technology does things quicker and cheaper. The price of school is outrageous and food is getting more and more expensive as droughts, floods and population expansion takes its toll on an ever dwindling supply.
We're heading downhill as a society and we appear to be picking up speed.
I've had my Grandkids living with me since August to try and help out while things get worse for their parents. My son did a lot of work in Fort McMurray before the forest fires and now their is no work available that pays the bills . Thousands of out of work oil field workers are spreading out among the provinces looking for work to support their families and foreclosing mortgages thereby displacing locals in the work force in an ever widening downward spiral.
What do people do to make ends meet?
Where are the jobs and the affordable housing?
Where should someone go to raise a family?

Invest in Lithium mining companies!

I was just in Vancouver. It certainly is an expensive place. Canada in general I find to be pretty expensive when you compare the wages. It's certainly unbalanced. Down Under things are expensive but we get paid really well so it's a little easier to get by.

Getting ahead with a family and mortgage is pretty much impossible working a regular job. You have to think outside the box. I think I've grown out of the considerations of having a large family. It's so much extra pressure and unnecessary stress!

God Speed to all the families out there in the grind!

Not all the boomers. I'm one & I have allus lived a frugal (relatively) life. Yeah, as an equipment operator I rearranged the landscape for the purpose of creating new housing etc. but, the dust has settled. People need housing/homes to live in. My kids both went to college & both have most excellent jobs/careers. <- didnt take any shit from them & didnt give them secure/safe places to hide out in/from (except their bedrooms).

My daughter graduated from Brown University, if you can believe that, & my son grad'd from UC Santa Cruz & had a job before he actually graduated.

I live off money I earned & mostly saved in my life. My newest car is 32 yrs old. House paid for about 25 yrs ago. I even stopped collecting unemployment when laid off, starting 25 +- yrs ago.

In the '60's I was in the USAF (<- draft dodger! coulda gone to Canada!) My peers, (=) other boomers, spit on me, so, what do you think I think about boomers??

(end of rant)

Alternative lifestyles, communities, and expectations.

Evolve or die.

There's always a way. (Unless there isn't. But welcome to reality)

Our yahooka stock is obviously top shelf but face it boomers: your peers were a bunch of assholes.

They survive by not starting families or getting a mortgage.

Our (thankfully) previous member of parliament came by during the campaign and you may remember I made a post about engaging her and her husband for a solid hour they wanted to spend campaigning.

One of the things they said in response to our concern about the cost of housing is that its better to rent anyways. Oh and also that things are no harder than when they were young adults.

I'm glad she got the boot. Go back to your beautiful horse farm on the moraine and socialize with retired nhl players, douche.

My game plan is to somehow hustle up enough dough to buy a plot of land somewhere, then go all galt-mode on that shit.

If all plans fail and dreams die, then plan B is to go some place warm year round with nice beaches, and go the homeless heroin addict route.
Or join a monestary. I could dig the buddhist monastic lifestyle honestly. Id probably be incredibly content with it.
Depends on the mood im in and how self-destructive im feeling at the time i guess.

It appears to me that in today's society there is a big difference in knowing what's needed and what's wanted.
Few people save money to buy things and instead use credit. they want computers and big TV's and fancy cars but seem blind to the fact that they are wants not needs.
Bagging a lunch, taking the bus, getting a room mate where all common a generation ago. People didn't have three tvs or 600$ phones.
The people I'm admiring most lately are the Syrian refugees who are setting up here with no expectations of life on easy street and whose whole lives are oriented on family and community. these people are masters of doing more with less and it's time us North Americans sat back and remember our roots.
