Things that Scared You When You Were A Kid

When I was really little my sister and I shared a room and a double bed. We had slanted ceilings that came right down close to our bed and for some reason there were two large hole right above our bed I'd say roughly right above where we would cling to each other in terror every night when we would go to sleep.

They were always black.

I think I remember thinking tarantulas were going to come out.

Or something evil.

The house is over 100 years old.

The movie Labyrinth frightened the heck out of me.
Climbing up the stairs, when it's complete darkness below and upstairs is the bright holy light of safety.

I was always scared when I was in my room because our staircase ended right at our bedroom entrance. The light would shine from downstairs.. I would stare at that light until I fell asleep sometimes watching for a scary shadow creeping up the hallway. Probably because my sister and I would throw this board game down there that we were also scared shitless of.

The basement.

The dark, dreary, cold, damp basement. With spider webs and crickets and a light that goes out on it's own.

Floorboards creaking above your head, when you know there's no one up there. The drip, drip, drip of water suddenly stopped. A branch tapping against the window and the wind that seems to say, "down here, down here".

Oh man that totally brought back this memory from when I was 4 years old... I remember that exact feeling.. had to brush my teeth.. mother ascended ahead, leaving me suddenly at the bottom of the stairs in the darkness of the main floor, on two feet on shaky ground, captured by the fear which defines the state of the realization that the day is truly over, and now the bathroom and my bedroom and my salvation up at the top of those stairs! and lo I ran! But just at first because in my haste I lost my footing halfway up, and thus made the rest of the distance on wrist and shin, wriggling frantically past the final banister and the equally frightened eyes of the confused kitten, past the threshhold and into the light!

And naught did I look back.

When I was a kid (early '50's, second grade) we rode the bus to a catholic school 10 miles away.

Had to walk to the bus depot after school.

I always looked in the empty lockers for money, sometimes dimes fell through the lock into the back of the lockers & I crawled in to retrieve them. Once (only once) my asshole big brother held the door shut with me inside, till the bus was ready to leave. I just barely fit in as it was, now, I HATE closed spaces, am VERY claustrophobic.

I was scared of bridges for a little while after i had a nightmare involving falling off one in a car.

Every time my mom would drive over a bridge after i told her, shed let go of the steeeing wheel with her hands and make me freak out lol. :/

I was also afraid of that fucking dummy from Goosebumps. Typical shit. He was under the bed or in the closet. Was going to open my eyes after a flash of lightning one night and hed be sitting upright somewhere laughing ready to kill.

lol My dad was a huge x files fan, I remember it came on TV right around my bed time. My dad would watch it every night and I could hear it from the bed room. For whatever reason the intro song to that show gave me the creeps.

As a kid it was going up stairs with the lights off, I always ran, no way was that mysterious thing going to grab me. Also after watching the movie Arachnophobia it was thinking spiders would come out of the shower head, I didn't close my eyes while washing my hair for a long time after that...NOPE

As an adult it's all about coming to terms with my mental illnesses and how they are me and I am them and how they don't run my life or define who I am or can be. As a kid you imagine what it's like to be an adult and that along the way there will be some magical light switch that gets turned on making you into a productive member of society or an "adult" yet the more I go on living the more I've come to realize that my mind isn't going to become anything more than what it already is. And I'm fine with that, it's who I am, and I have come to love myself. Anyone else care for some of this love? I'll be giving it freely, just ask.

Haha I crossed paths with Ryan Gossling at TIFF. He's super skinny.
