NYC trip

I was originally going to post a much darker version of this in Guidance and Support but it was tldr so I'll try to sum the darker version up in this

Been in a bit of a major funk the past few years.

Now I got the dark stuff out of the way Here's one coherent thing I can ask and perhaps you guys could push me in the right direction here. I'm really struggling with money and I'm trying to save to get another apartment even though it'll mean probably having to sleep on the floor. The idea of being stuck in a suburban basement at my dad's has really been bumming me out. I'm a huge fan of stand up comedy, it's become something I enjoy because comedians like most creative people are so fucked up in the head. There's new comedy festival in NYC for one weekend. $90 for all access for dozens of comics I'm a big fan of and regularly listen to their podcasts and talk to on twitter. Tickets went on sale and I debated whether on getting them or not.I decided that I need to be saving the money and it's the responsible adult thing to do, they sold out the next day and I immediately regretted not getting them. NYC isn't too far from Ontario, I've always wanted to go to NYC, it was only for one weekend, it sounded like it would be a lot, of fun meet people I admire and I've done no traveling since I've turned 19.

A few hours later the comic that organizes the show messages me there are some tickets left but only about a dozen. I make the rash decision to buy one immediately and of course they actually sell out this time within an hour. Again I immediately regret the decision thinking flying there, plus staying someplace, plus the ticket, plus food it's going be at least setting behind $600 and I really need to find a place to live because living with my dad isn't working out. Also I've never traveled before as an adult let alone by myself and since every I ever do turns into a nightmare I'm sure this will do. Either I'll end up getting stranded, or get arrested or lost or something.

I kind of want to bail and just take the $90 as a loss opposed to the $600 so I can work on getting out of this hell hole and maybe by the end of the summer be living in an empty apartment of my own. Also I know I'll end up fucking up somehow between here and NYC and getting myself in trouble because that's what I do or since I'll by myself at a festival it'll be super alienating.

The other side thinks I could really use the change in scenery and it might be a new experience to feeling more accomplished than I do now and I've already bought the ticket a booked off a couple days off work.

You should just stop thinking so much and go.

Check out the Upright Citizens theater on 8th Av when you get here, you can see some world class comedy for a $10 ticket. My favorite troupe is the Stepfathers, they go up late on Fridays.

Get your life in order. Stop drinking. Stop procrastinating and grab the bull by the fucking horns. You're too smart of a dude to be wallowing in self pity.

Word, it's a good point that if you are depressed with your life, a vacation away from it won't magically make it better. You get excited planning time away and you have a great time, but then you're back to the same shit, maybe worse since now there's nothing to look forward to.

Same logic applies for people who go for inpatient residential treatment. Fuck yeah bro, doing yoga in the mountains for 28 days makes you feel like you never need to do drugs or drink again. But what's the plan for when you get back to sitting at home bored on a Tuesday night?

But check out the Stepfathers for real.

Hey reggie.

What do you feel you need more? To goto NYC for a bit and connect with fellow comics or to find an apartment ASAP? I ask that question seriously rather than ironically. Sometimes our souls are in need of uplifting, and doing things we want to do can be just as important. A good question to ask may be: Will there be any ramifications for setting yourself back $600? Like what? Can you tolerate them or would you honestly prefer to just be on your own ASAP?

Maybe ask yourself these questions and write down your answers so everything is a little less scattered and you can see what your thought process is.

If your interested in selling your ticket you can probably do so online. Try posting a sincere (not spammy) post in groups on Facebook. For example there's one called "Toronto Comedy." Check if there is an event page, and online classifieds. I'm sure you could find someone interested in buying your tickets (especially if there were so few left.)

If you decide you want to go - there are some things you can do to reduce your cost. Using MegaBus to get there https://ca.megabus.com//, Checking out hostels, (Hi Hostel is a great one that's international: https://www.hihostels.com) You can even check out Couch Surfing: https://www.couchsurfing.com . With Couch Surfing I would simply suggest being careful and really taking the time to review potential host's reviews. Perhaps call them ahead of time to get to know them. I have had a bad experience, but that doesn't mean it's all bad.

You can also do things like eat breakfast at the hostel (if you choose that route) to cut back on food costs. Or pack some food with you. I would recommend writing how much you're willing to spend on drinks so you can average out how many drinks you can buy before you're spending all of your money on booze and bar food.

If you decide not to go and feel bummed about it - try connecting with local comics in your area. There's a lot of comedy in Toronto and many open mics if you're interested in sharing your own work. Often those places are really great for making friends or meeting new people.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck!

There is an entire couch surfing community and if you're a good guest they review you positive and you never have trouble finding a place.

Maybe try and find some message boards or a subreddit.

Also if you're looking at subreddits try r/vandwellers in case you wanna get a van and just travel finding odd jobs.

Honestly all the advice here is great. Hope things work out for you man.

600 bucks is what, one or two weeks of work tops? So youre only setting yourself back two weeks. Id say that's worth a fun nyc comedy weekend.

And honestly you dont need to spend 600 bucks. I really like the idea that someone brought up of bringing your own food. This is where nyc murders you.

But then again, maybe you should treat yo self Reggie.
Even if you go all out and drop your 600... like i said man that shits only a week or two's pay.

americans have a problem with getting through flying at all without the tsa stealing from them and fingering buttholes.

My mom was flying recently and I was praying no tsa agent was a dick or stole from her.

June 23-25

If I go I think I might just airbnb. Hostels are cool but I am so paranoid about getting bed bugs again and apparently NYC is full of them

I think we learn a vast amount while travleing. I encourage everyone to travel, especially while you are young.

Things ive learned traveling: how to budget and get by with as little as possible. Bring food. Stay in the cheapest places possible. You'll only be there for a few days and realistically you will only be sleeping in the room. Bring a sleeping bag. Bring a towel. Never say no to a free meal. Never say no to a free place to stay. Never underestimate how far a smile can get you. Don't be afraid to put it out there either. What i mean is, after meeting someone and getting to know them for a bit they might ask you what your plans are or where you are staying. Saying things like just looking for a cheap meal or looking for a cheap place to lay my head for the night can get you an invite.

Yes this can be considered manipulation to an extent, but this is how you travel on a budget and save your money for the things you actually want to do.
