I think the most appealing part of DXM is the disconnection and strangeness your setting takes on. Trying to talk, navigating a hallway with out hitting the walls, watching bizzare films, etc.

I think that's my favorite part the drug. It's like being drunk without the stupidity you feel when you're drunk. Cleaner, I suppose you could say.

DXM is a dissociative anesthetic. Unlike Shrooms and LSD which will give you more of an outward trip. DXM tends to make you withdraw into yourself more. That's probably why it feels like a "dark and evil" trip. I bet if you were the most content with yourself person in the world a DXM trip would be wonderful. This is only a guess as I have no idea how you feel about yourself consciously or subconsciously.
