mother size and or control of manually
so here's my situation gang, i've got 4 mothers about 3 months old in 1 gallon pots under 1 400w halide. due to considerable cloning, they are still nearing 30" tall. I'd like them to be more like18 to 24" tall. the lights on 24/7 'cause I don't want them to flower, and I keep them on a good minimum fertlization regimen to keep them from growing like crazy.
so here's my question; can I trim back the rootball and replace it with a good soilmix ala banzai style, or should I just go up to a 2 or 3 gallon pot. I'm a fraid that will just encourage more growth. and that I don't need. my success ratio of clones are amazing so I don't need more vegetatation. I am considering trying the banzai root treatment on my most spindlyest mother, just to see if it's possible. if I lose a mother, I'll still have 3, and thats almost still 1 too many. ok, I'm done rambling. smoke it like it's legal, ThcBuz

I have trimmed/limited rootballs to keep mums small several times. Shocks the hell out of them but as long as you're not over the top and leave relative canopy and root masses all should be well given good care. As kosh says it's better than being rootbound.
The hardest thing I always find is decanting the buggers and getting the roots into a state where they can be manipulated without damaging the plant. By the sounds of it as long as you clone all your mums more than you need next time out if you lose a mum you have a ready made replacement waiting anyhow. I seem to remember an article not long back in OG regarding bonzai mums. Could be wrong though! SS

thanks guys for the information. I guess I'm just an overachiever. and right now I'm kindof stuck with the lights like they are. for money purposes. I agree, flourescent bulbs would grow a mother easier and with less growth than the 400w halide, with less energy consumed to run the bulb I've got now. but I'm gonna make an experiment out of the stringiest mother I've got , and take clones off of the others. that should control my growth problems for now. and I also agree kosh, I would gladly give clones away to worthy recipients in my area, but sadly, I personally no of no one with whom I could share with safely.it's sad but true. I'm sure there are growers in my area, but there are also a lot of people looking for people just like us. maybe I'm paranoid. but I'm too old topiss with poser's. freedom rules, even if it's my own little private idaho. I never have a problem moving herb, but knowledge of grow's are forbidden.
peace,pot and Prosperity, ThcBuz
