I'm as new as they get.
I am trying my first crop. My wife has spent way too much money and I decided to study hydroponics and grow some for her. I got some seeds from a friend, I set up a killer hydroponics system, and only some of the germinated seeds are doing well. (9 out of 20). My ph is right around 6 depending on the exposure to light and stuff, I'm using only a fraction of the amount of nutrient called for, and the heat and humidity are good according to the marijuanna growers handbook. Why didn't the seedlings do as well as they could, and how can I tell which will be males or females?

Babies cannot run before they can walk...
If you don't even know the difference between a male and a female, then how in the world are you going to pull off your Hydro grow ? Best thing is, next time, go for soil... You know that soil grow yields a much better harvest right ? You know that soil grow gives the buds more taste and potency right ? What you didn't know is,...that soil is even better than hydroponics. Everyone covets hydroponic is because it's more controllable. Everything is right down to its last drop,...for example, watering a hydroponic garden, is less risky than watering for a soil grow. But all in all, soil is the way to be, the way to grow, and the way to appreciate buds in their end. Now on to the questions, the seedling aren't doing well because of their genetics. Your friend might gave you bad seeds. That is why only 9 are doing good. You can also check how much you feed and water your hydro grow, that is also a factor. What kind of lights do you have ? If you have HID lights that are 250+ wattage, then you want to keep the light and the seeds about 2 feet apart... If you can, sell your hydro, and save your money and go soil... But if you cannot, then I suggest you post your pics so we all can hold each other's hand as we go along. |

oh sitar, you come over here and sit down at my kitchen table ill give you a hydro bud and a soil bud and defy you to tell me which is which! ill bet my virtue on it!!!
the other advantage to hydro ive noticed is quicker growth -a seed planted in dirt with a full 2 weeks head start is not nearly as big and lush and vigorous as its hydro sisters. seriously. plus, depending on your situation, i think its a security benefit to be able to just set your timers and lock the door, and not have to go into your gro room every single day for watering and whatnot. you can set up automated drip for soil growing but really its a small step from that to a simple hydro setup. people object to hydro becuz its "not natural" like soil growing. well, what about your artificial light? wouldnt buds grown outdoors in natural sunlight smoke and taste soooo much better than those grown in unnatural light? i mean, you gotta compromise somewhere, and if we must gro in secret, then i dont think hydro is such a bad thing. i kno, everybody has bought a bag of hydro that tasted bad, tasted like chemicals, ect.. but any commercial bud you buy was grown just for its cash value, it wasnt grown with love. the very same thing is true of commercially grown fruits and vegetables in the supermarket. like those big bright red utterly flavorless tasteless tomatoes -yuk! um, sorry... what was the question? |

Dear Veda,
I apologize, but Sitarguy isn't here right now. He's off in his garden of Eden tending to his plants. My name is Bimbabwe, and I do believe in the all hydro grow that we all like to someday use. I am an avid smoker of hydro grown buds too...I believe that buds grown from a hydro system is far more superio.... "coughs" Excuse me... I tend to like my hydro system. I sometimes worry if I use soil, I might overwater it, and also overfertilize it. One thing about hydro is, everything is right down on the mon.... "coughs" ...Ooh man, excuse me. I did smoke a lil bowl before this letter. As I was saying, sometimes, when I tend to my grow, I personally love the fact that you can control everything including to how much nutrients you're going to feed. The irrigation system that comes with the hyd.... ... what...the.... what's...wrong with me.... ... "starts to itch" ... .....I feel...a little.... "starts to cough real badly" ....HELP SOMEONE CALL ... "brown resin hydro buds start to foam at the mouth and burn Bimbabwe's face" *inaudible* ... |
