I dont think any of you should limit the use of the internet by your kids because you cant protect them from everything out there and they should be free to search for what ever kind of information they need.

Let's face it, that's a parents job... puppy training. It's just some puppies are smarter than others and learn to make the sytem work for them instead of butting thier heads against a wall all the time. all attempts my parents made at limiting my internet time (and eventually trying to stop it all together) failed. They disconnected my internet. So one day when they were out I wired a network around the house... pretty damn well I should say so too...
took them 6 months to realise...

@atc - *laughs* That's the one. *quiver*
@oneder - Too true, I try to keep one step ahead though, they don't know ALL what ol' Shot knows. @Dan - That's kind of what we do but the homework aspect is occasionally used as an excuse to get more net time, particularly when one of their siblings wants a go. It's obvious to me that an essay will take longer when MSN is on that when it's not! And you're definatley right about the whole training for real life, that's one thing we try very hard to do, particularly now they are older and are doing more "adult things". What sometimes takes awhile though is the realisation that alongside said pursuits come certain responsibilities. It's that whole, you treat this place like a hotel and you don't even pay syndrome that all teenagers go through. @BC Budman - My partner does, they're not mine by blood but I love them just the same. Yes, they know of my garden, they're all pretty straight though to be honest and since they have grown up without all the misinformation Canna is just a herb to them, with all the illicit nature of pot removed they have more interest in having a beer with their mates. I don't really know if they will end up toking, I suspect one will and if he does then I will be more than happy to have a family helper. @DJDemon - It's a worthy outlook but it's not neccessarily the content, perhaps more the time and the limits that places on other things they could be doing. @effer - It's a scary but ultimately rewarding thing. I wish they gave lessons though! ![]() @Zolt - Products of the old school man. @Cup - *laughs* sounds like something that would happen here. I'd probably still not have noticed! What's that cable? Ahh, buggrit. Thanks for the responses Yahooka, keep them coming.

kamikazi i wouldn't worry too much.
teaching her well is the answer, not these bullshit programs. when i was like 11 or 12 my parents used net nanny, it severely hurt my ability to do schoolwork and i was still able to find porn. waste of goddamned money.

it's her physical well-being i'm concerned with mostly..not (necessarily)what she might be searching for and finding, i can't control that, the only thing i can do is limit her time and i haven't felt the need to

i had a computer in my room at age 7, and i've had the internet since age 11. . . which i incidentally just realized is over half my life, crazy. i got my nes at age 2 for christmas. in other words i've been in front of a screen for quite a while, and now i spend much of my time at work in front of one. despite all this, i had a very fulfilling and active childhood/young adult life. i don't think i'll concern myself overmuch with how my children spend their free time, though i will admit i take my place on the fringe by seriously considering buying one of those mini asus laptops for my 3 year old. perhaps i'm a bit biased?

![]() Yes, give the net nanny a try. My daughter, at 16, was surfing the net, unprotected by me and my wife (21 years married) and my daughter stayed in her bedroom all day. I guess she was surfing all the filth available on the net and was curious.Human nature buddy, seek and learn.But my daughter is very intelligent and was a little taken back by all the filth and disgust. She told us and I (not my wife), had to deal with it. I said to her"What did you see?". My daughter responded,"I couldn't believe the crap and filth". I responded with; "Yes, it is unbelievable and filthy" and "You must take responsible, NOT to surf those sites. Women are victimized and taken advantage of." My daughter never surfed obscene sites again.Simple. Talk to your kids and they will do the RIGHT thing. Use Netnanny but you will in return, restrict your kids right to decide. |

I dunno, I think I was able to mature as quickly as I did due to the realization of this information at such an early onset. Luckily, I was able to handle the exposure to sex & violence with ease and realized the difference between everyday reality and what I was seeing on the screen. I hope to allow my future little one (very future, just a twinkle in my eye at this point) complete freedom, but I do plan on monitoring his/her behavior and communicating as much as possible to ensure they are absorbing it the right way at the right rate. It will be a tightrope to walk. I know I don't want to completely censor my kid because that will only make them that much more curious and determined to see what I won't allow them to...and I KNOW they will be able to find out about it from a source outside the home. So if they are going to find out one way or another, I'd rather it be in a form of freedom & understanding rather than limitation & censorship.
