n00b question-starting cannabis strains

hey i am new to growing medical marijuana and i was wondering how does one go about to starting their own strain, do they just grab someone elses strain and change it genetically or is there a specific process, any and all info would be helpful

also how many generations does it take to make a new strain stable

At its simplest, breeding is taking the pollen from a male plant and pollinating a female plant to make seeds.

There are different ways of going about breeding depending on the objectives of the breeder. But everyone has to start with some plants or seeds that they got from somewhere..

How long is a piece of string?

It depends very much on what you start with and how you go about breeding.

Gregor Mendel came up the theory of genetic inheritance in the 19th century.

RC Clark wrote a book called Marijuana Botany which is generally used as a ganja reference text though it is perhaps a bit outdated now.

There is a book by Greg Green called The Cannabis Breeders Bible which is fairly instructive.

Because of the stupid war on drugs there is a dearth of proper peer reviewed research on canna breeding despite it being one of the most widely bred plants on the planet.
