Post Newborns the Native Way...

Newborn infants are highly sensitive to some important smells:

Babies are responsive to very faint differences in body odour, but it is believed that infants are highly sensitive only to specific smells, rather than a wide range of odours.
A newborn’s sense of smell is very acute. As your baby learns where various smells come from, he begins to recognize them and respond to them.

Having said that.............in our culture, the newborn baby is NOT put in a crib in another room!

A small hammock is suspended above the parents bed..........WHY?

First and foremost, the infant knows mommy and daddy are close.......smell!
If the infant wakes up in the middle of the night...........mom and dad are right there.
The warmth from the parents sleeping below, keeps baby warm.

Just don't get your baby confused with the fruit basket in the middle of the night and bite off a pinky toe.

nothing better than skin2skin all night long.

I think there's a few safety issues in taking a newborn into bed with two grown adults.

Seriously, if I wanted to I could just throw the next gay guy I come across right up against a wall and give him an anal assault and he wouldn't complain one bit.

Rolling over and crushing the baby
Suffocating it in pillows and blankets
things of that nature

anyone who has ever spent the night on a consistent basis with another human in bed can usually attest to a certain connection that develops between sleeping bodies, with regards to respecting the boundaries of anothers space.

there are exceptions, but my guess is you would find that most of them were attributable to an existing health issue in the adult.

sleeping with baby in bed might truly not be for everybody but it certainly is backed by a long cultural history, and continues to be "the norm" in many parts of the world. the American perspective on the matter is, like many "modern" babycentric opinions, a remnant byproduct of the misogynist 1950s.

yeah thats all fine to be, but i just think you should wait til the babies a bit bigger and stronger before that

but if it were me, i'd want to sleep in a hammock some nights probably, and the bed with mom and dad on others

hammocks ftw

I put both of my boys in a bassinet right by the bed. F sleepin in the same bed until they are at least two. You could suffocate them with just an arm over their little face, or the edge of a pillow. I don't know about you guys but most mornings when I wake up, I'm rolled up in the comforter sideways by my wifes feet...and she's had to get up and cover with a throw. Point being your not conscious enough to watch out for a baby when your asleep period. I wouldn't even think about it.

I am a heavy smoker and slept with my kids in the bed from newborn to 3 years old. at one stage we were 5 in the bed (it's 2 doubles pushed together).

at first i worried about it, but in reality, you would need to be of your head on heroin or a bottle of whiskey or sleeping pills to actually roll over onto and smother your kid.

they wake you up every 2 hours anyway and you stop sleeping heavily with babies and by the time they are 2 ish they will kick you if you get to close to them.

it is a great way of bonding.

Think about how scary it would be to be taken from this nice, warm, safe happy place (the womb), to this foreign, bright, loud, lonely, huge world in a big crib rooms away alone. Poor bebe's.

Pharm Girl! Great post woman!

i think we can all agree that hammocks are awesome, and so are babies. there would be no war if everyone was always lying in a hammock and/or a baby.

but in seriousness if i ever have a baby this sounds like an awesome idea. cribs are pretty terrible.
