netbook for xmas?

ok, i have a problem. i typed out this whole page of shit for you guys and realized you guys probably don't want to read it..

my parents got my brother a very nice laptop for a "graduation present" when he graduated high school 5 years ago. To this day he still uses it immensely in his course of study, not to mention I never even got a graduation present either.

i never had a graduation party because we moved out of state my sr. year, i didn't get a bunch of money like my brother did, i didn't get any money or presents from my parents or any other family members.

today my mom mentioned getting me a notebook for xmas even though she's mentioned a lap top previously. however, my major is computer science...

these netbooks are VERY basic computers... they might be useful for the first year or two while I still have general education classes, but once I get more into computer science classes, a netbook would be WORTHLESS. however they are only like $200... should i just accept it and not complain or should I try to explain to them I'm getting ripped the fuck off over here?

It makes me feel like crying how much goes unnoticed by my parents with me vs. my brother. Any little thing that happens to my brother that isn't his fault he gets sympathy for, anything that happens to me, I get told to suck it up.

dude, you live with your parents and they buy you shit. why are you about to cry?

just explain to them that a netbook won't work for your program and give them reasons.

lol im not going to cry. i realize im a little bitch.

well i don't think there's any such thing as reasoning with my parents. i think there's something wrong with the logic category in their brains.

so should i take it, or not? i say no... but i want so see what you guys think and why.

edit: and for the record the only thing my parents buy me is the roof over my head, food and insurance. that's IT! i pay for my gas and clothes(which my brother never did at my age).

that's a tough spot spanky. i feel you on this one. my feeling towards xmas gifts is that they're gifts and you should accept them as they come. and if it wont work for school then that's your own problem. you get what you're given.

duuude, that's like everything.. i had to start buying my own clothes and shit i wanted when i was 11.. started buying groceries at like 14-15.. moved out at 17 because she wanted me to pay rent [which my sister didn't and still doesn't have to do.. my sister is 2 years older and has never moved out or anything]..

like, even when i go back to my hometown to visit, i don't stay there. when you're used to living on your own its tough to submit to someone's house rules and shit.

thank you. now go write up a list of points and reasons why they shouldn't get you a netbook and why they should get you something else and give them some reccomendations. you could even offer to pay them back in the future when/if you make any money off their purchase [if you're taking comp sci, you could probs find a way to make moneys off it]

Whenever I hear this claim I just know it is an exaggeration, and believe me I used to hear wackos sayin it! Where did you work at age 11? In fact, in the states a 14 year old can only work very limited hours, maybe not even until 15.

Haha just because you can't work for Burger King at 11 doesn't mean you can't work. When I was 11 I was working all the time. Babysitting for friends and family can make you some bank. So can yard work. Also I had my own place when I was 15.

Anyway about the notebook. As someone else said its a gift. You're really not in a position to be picky about what someone is giving you, ya know? What you can do is talk to your mom after you have it given to you. Explain what the limitations are and what you would ultimately like to see out of your laptop. Ask if she would be offended if you exchanged it and pay the difference yourself. If you take her with you and she has the money she may be feeling generous and pay the difference for you. If not, oh well. If you're not willing to pay the difference for what you really want the you're a whiny brat.

my family had a big office supplies company that my opa started in the 60s called IBF Canada. sold to corporate express in '99 or 2000. worked in the warehouse there from when i was 8 years old in the summers. when i was twelve i worked at Jasper Park Lodge as a bell boy-- they couldn't legally pay me, but i was able to make tips. and lots of 'em. hahah

just because you're a kid doesn't mean you can't make some money for yourself.

Yeah but I got into too many fights in school so I stared my freshmen year at an alternative school. I went 2 hours a day 4 days a week basically to take tests, ask any questions and turn in papers. I had my first real job when I was 14.

Well, HS was a waste of time for me anyways. I probably would have been better off starting college at 15 or just learning a good work ethic at a job.

Clearly don't be an asshole about it, but I disagree in this instance that it'd be rude to tell them it's not really useful to you. I wouldn't say you're getting ripped off/or that it's not fair. However I think if you explain to them nicely what you've explained to us (that in your field it's not really logical), it's not a big deal. It's like when my dad wanted to get me a new coat one year. I had just bought a coat. It would've been wasteful to let him get me another coat. I had to tell him I just got a new one. Got something I could use instead. No biggie as long as you're respectful and understand that gifts aren't necessary. I guess it really depends on your relationship with them.

What's being a comp sci major got to do with it.

Unless you're going to be developing hard core physics and graphics applications (e.g. 3d video games) I think the average PC would run just fine for you. Whats the specs?

ok tough guy calm down.

spanky, i just bought a gateway lt303u. yea they are definetly not a full sized computer but are perfectly fine for micrsoft office or adobe photoshop type programs. they are mad small and portable which is nice. the only thing is they suck at watching movies, you cant watch youtube vidoes or similar in full screen because it lags too much.

if you need a full sized laptop tell them this and tell them it pisses you off the favoritism towards your brother. but also dont be bitter that your brother got something you didnt, maybe times were different , the economy was better and he was lucky. dont act like you are owed something because it was given to someone else, just be happy about what you get knamean?

didnt realize this thread was old, so what ended up happening spanky?>

It seems that your parents do not value you the way you feel you should be valued. If that's the case I would confront your parents face to face and ask them why. Find out the reasons for their actions and then determine the new value you assign to your parents. Is that new value > the minimum amount needed for you to give a shit?

In other words...who gives a fuck what they do if you don't respect them. And, how could you respect someone who doesn't understand the value of something even when confronted with the reality of it's value.....

So...who cares?

Blame Flash - the worst player ever made yet it dominates web content. It sucks your CPU dry. DIE FLASH DIE. Fuck you Adobe, you arrogant pricks. Your time is coming with Flash when HTML5 becomes the new efficient standard.
