Apprenticeships and the Trades
So I was wondering if I could get some career/education guidance.
A couple years ago I graduated High School, really hated it but muscled through it to get my diploma, not good enough grades to make it a University but I was accepted a few community colleges. I enjoyed English in High School and in my rushed state to try to apply to something I picked Journalism and went to a community college for the journalism program. Turns out it wasn't for me. My classmates were nice but were kind of yuppies so I couldn't really hold a conversation with any of them. Was doing very poorly in it and just kind of lost interest in it half way through, didn't see myself on it in the future. So now I'm a college drop out. Now to my decision, at first I thought about being a police officer, that'd be a cool job but then being part of the war on drugs would make me feel dirty, then I'd have to do drug tests and on top of that I'm not a very big guy and I don't how well I would have done in the physical aspects. I thought of something else, a direction I think I want to go in but I don't have anything about it. Going into a trade there's so many but I have lots of family and friends in the trades. Mostly in Masonry and Plumbing and Welding. At first I thought Masonry but everyone tells me about how back breaking hard it is. Welding doesn't hold much interest in me but I think plumbing could be interesting. My worry is that I know nothing about this stuff, I took english and shit in Highschool so I don't know anything and I'm worried they'll want some type of experience or if I get the wrong person at the end of my apprenticeship and I don't really learn anything. I'm just wondering if any of you guys or gals are in the trades or know someone who is and have any tips or heads up for me? |

Werd, for starters, you're going to need to go to some kind of school/program, you can't just "be a plumber". Whether it's a certificate program or what, you end up needing a license to get real work in the long run, yanno?
I don't know where you live, but maybe look into jobs that could get your foot in the door. I know my pops was doin security at the casinos while he was going to school for HVAC. When he got out, he got into the HVAC where he was already working because they knew and trusted him. Know what I mean? It doesn't necessarily have to be a job regarding plumbing, but somewhere where you can potentially make contacts to help you out later. There's also the issue that you shouldn't just go into something because you don't know what to do. You have to really want to be doing it, or I'll tell you what, plumbing will be the death of you. Just like anything else. And don't take something off your list because it'll be hard (masonry)...if you're interested in it, know you can do it. Because there's old men doing that shit. If that's what you want to be doing, do it. Go for it. You can change your mind later, but it's going to suck years down the line if that's really what you wanted to be doing. On the real, look into some kind of accredited program to get into regarding whichever field. People are looking for licenses, schooling, etc. /ramblingsorry
