My Great Aunt is passing on.

My Grandfather's older sister, Aunt Hazel, is the last of her family, since all her other brothers and sisters have passed away.

Now 87 years old , has had a rip roaring good time in life. Never married, kept by 2 men throughout her life, always went dancing, smoked like a chimney, wasn't scared to shoot the bird when driving and was always "Fat and Sassy!", when you asked how she was doing. She was a real character of herself. I don't think she changed from 25-75 when her age and wear started to catch up with her a bit.

Other than a small bout of colon cancer, this lady has always been super healthy. And she was absolutely no testament to healthy living

Hazel was at our home all summer through most of mine and my sisters childhood and there are too many good stories to tell. We all used to pack into my double bed and laugh the night away Every so often we'd get electrical storms and we'd wake up to watch them rage on. When the moon was just a finger nail in the sky, we'd all gaze at that till we fell asleep, and each morning we all went out to watch the sun rise. Truly when the seasons change I think of Auntie and it was always a comfort knowing that somewhere out there, she was looking up and thinking of me too.

Thursday, Haze was found on her bathroom floor with a bump on her head and blood on her face. She had been there for 14 hours they think. Her breathing was shallow and they deduced she was dehydrated and little oxygen in her blood stream. She kicked and put up a fight going until two nice young male medics showed up, then she was her charming self ! What a hoot!

Well, now she is in the hospital and in critical care. Her kidney's are off and on and she is only taking IVs and oxygen. Today we wasn't responsive to anyone and was in and out all day of consciousness. Nothing short of a miracle will save her, but I don't think it would really suit her much to be waited on hand and foot. She always was a do-er-her-selfer.

In my heart I know this is the end of this life for her and she will be passing on soon. I know she knows I loved her very much and that she was and will always been in my heart. She is a premier adult figure in my "what's an adult?" logic. Live to its fullest and laugh a lot.

A story she told the landlord and the medics, when she was barely lucid was about some people who came to see her. They put on all her favourite songs and danced for her. My Greatgrandmother saw kids for 6 months before she died. A mentally stable lady, with out question, used to tell us about the kids that came over to play today.

I don't know what to make of these or what they are, angels or what have you, but I know this is a sign that there is a foot on both sides of the curtain. But I know Haze isn't going to be late for her big show when they pull back that curtain and she comes busting through in full strut!

I love you Aunt Haze. Thank you for a beautiful life together and the memories I'll carry while we are apart.

You Great Nephew

Sounds like a beautiful life, with the beauty properly appreciated. May her memories always make your life a bit more beautiful, too.

Thanks Folks. It's one of those sad but not sad kinda feelings. Know what I mean?

You are all very kind Thanks for this, it was a great start to a day, which no doubt will end up in contemplation of the good times and memories.

Tuesday afternoon my Aunt died. My Mom called to tell me last night. I wasn't extremely sad about it, which I didn't really expect to feel. So the tears keep coming and that is okay for me, sadness has its time, and most of these tears are over good memories.

Thanks for you thoughts and prayers. From what I understand she went on after some people had left her room for 5 mins and when they came back she was dead. Just like Auntie I suppose, doing it on her terms.

One year down......

I still miss you Aunty.
Doesn't seem like it's been this long yet.
I'll see you next week, when I'm back in the Cove over Easter.
Then put some flowers on your hillside and sit you with for a while.
I love you.
And I think of you often.
Every time I laugh at people staring at me for doing it my way, I never forget who taught me that lesson first and best.

Your Great-Nephew
