Aviation jobs and medical cannabis

I have been pursuing my FAA A&P mechanics license (aircraft mechanic). Drugs testing is extremely common in the field, but I would be moving to a state where I would be receiving medical cannabis.

Back story, I'm elligible for medical cannabis because I have an unknown problem with my upper GI tract that causes nausea, appetite swings, and dry heaving. Medical cannabis has completely solved the problem.

My point is, what loopholes exist for legal MJ users in jobs that require clean urine? They still allow most employees who are prescribed painkillers to work with dirty urine, so would marijuana make any difference? The licensing process is also federally regulated, so would that conflict with state laws?

Sorry I can't use the search feature. I'm sure the topic has been brought up, but I'm on my IPhone in an area without 3G coverage. All help is appreciated.

Well according to conversations with Hedons [a well-known small plane aviator and all around smart guy] there isn't much preliminary testing, but if you crash or cause any kind of incident they'll test the hell out of you.

That convo was years ago, so take with a grain of salt.

Trust me, I did aviation work for 5 years, and they drug test a LOT. Mind you companies without military contracts, which I will be working for, still drug teat consistently. This is just a subject that I don't know a whole lot about.

I saw Super High Me last night and it is making me second guess going the medical route. The part of the movie with the DEA raid was straight fucked, and I don't want my constitutional rights tramped upon by a government that I served 5 years for. I may bring it up during my interview, but I don't want to raise a stink too early in my career. I don't know many other 23 year olds making more than 100K a year and don't wanna fuck this up.

If I get the chance I'm going to anonymously call a few aircraft companies and ask for their policy.

I would imagine that since medical mj still isn't recognized by fed. law that a lot of companies are left to decide on their own whether or not they'll allow medical users to get by with failing a drug test. Most likely it varies from company to company, so that's a good plan to call around and ask. This is all speculation, of course but I would say this is likely the situation.

When smoking affects your daily life, like getting a job, then it becomes an addiction. I'm guessing airlines don't like pilots with narcotics addictions either. That's how they see it anyways...

If I had a chance at a job as a pilot, I would say fuck smoking, any day.

edit: sorry I didn't notice you're a mechanic. Well mechanics are just as, if not more important than pilots.

Most of the pilots I knew were kept on a regiment of ambien against most of their wills. I called a couple companies today and they don't recognize marijuana as medicinal, no matter what state you're in.

I would say fuck smoking but I really enjoy it when my stomach isn't in constant turmoil. The only reason I started smoking again was because of stomach problems anyway.
