A serious question about marijuana & pregnancy

My girlfriend is 8 months pregnant. She occasionally takes a puff of marijuana to ease nausea, however it is very infrequent - once or twice a week, at the very most.

Today at the ob/gyn the doctor said to her "We are still detecting marijuana in your system", and asked her if she had been smoking or was around smokers. My girlfriend told the doc that she had been around some smokers, and the doc said that they would run another test. This is the first time she brought it up to us.

This makes me a little worried that they could decide to refuse further care or even worse, make a case with CPS or something. I know this has happened in other states, but I haven't heard about it happening in Washington state.

So my question is this: can a doctor take action to try and take our child away when it is born because my girlfriend tested positive for marijuana a few times? I'd really appreciate some advice from someone that knows the law or has been in this situation before - I've been having a hard time finding any sort of useful information on the internet so far.

Thanks

your insurer could look to have you booted because of illicit drug usage.

kinda makes sense they'd be looking just before the expensive shit starts.

coincidence? I THINK NOT!

also I don't think a doctor can divulge anything without your permission to LEO unless there is actual danger to the patient and it's proven fact that THC is illegal, not harmful, even to the unborn fetus.

For one month left....?

I'd consider grinning and bearing it if at all possible.

It sucks, but what's the cost/benefit here to the baby and you two?

every thing about these statements are false.

doctors are actually required to report anything illegal, it's part of their license agreement.

also, it's not a proven fact that it's harmless to an unborn fetus. I learned about it in nutrition class because THC is in fact considered a teratogen.

Keep her sober!! They can and will turn your baby over to child services. I saw a couple girls who lost their children from drug use in my classes @ trinity. The parents then have to jump thru hoops and regular drug tests. Good luck keep her clean!!! Not trying to be a d!ck just stating what I've seen.

She's still having nausea?

I suppose they could bring it before CPS, but I don't think they will. My daughter just went through this about a year ago. She was all nervous because she knew someone, who knew someone, who said they had their kids taken from smoking weed. When she looked into the story further, yes the chick smoked weed, but she also did pills and coke and drank alot.

So basically, anyone who says they had their kids taken away for smoking weed only, I just don't believe the story.

Having said that, I would just not smoke for that last month. I wouldn't want to be the "test case".

And, an interesting tidbit of trivia.... Marijuana babies are born with blue sclera. The white part of the eyes are tinted blue. It goes away.

She won't be smoking for the rest of the pregnancy, but that's besides the point - she has had nausea throughout the entire pregnancy, and taking a hit of weed helps lower her stress levels and eliminates her nausea, which I believe to be quite beneficial to both her and our baby.

I've done enough research to form my own opinions about marijuana and its effects on the fetus, but that's not what I'm here about. I want to know from someone knowledgeable or with specific experience in this matter whether or not they are able to legally take action against us because of the THC-positive test.

I appreciate the reply, thank you. I'm wondering, however, where you came across this 'blue sclera' idea. I did a bit of googling on the subject and did come across a few tidbits of information on it, but nothing specifically relating to pregnancy, no studies to back it up, and this is the first time I've ever heard anything about this. Do you have sources?

So I gotta ask why would you go to a marijuana user board instead of like a doctor or mother board? Just curious

I have visited such websites. They are dogmatic in their opinions about marijuana, and they give the impression that is one of the worst things you could put in your body during a pregnancy, and none of them seem to be able to back up their opinions with hard evidence. I figured I would get more helpful information here, where I might find people that have had similar experiences or people that know the laws. It seems as though everyone just wants to scare me, which is bullshit.

#1 I personally wasn't trying to scare you just inform from my limited knowledge. #2 That's a pretty good reason to go elsewhere for a 2nd opinion. Best o luck
