It helps to get a buddy to do exercise with. you mentioned getting your family involved, and i know i'm always like mister example, lol, but the way i started out was just walking around the block with my dad in the mornings. doing it right when you wake up gets super hard in the cold and the dark, but with this reduced photoperiod, you're even more likely to get depressed from lack of light and even less activity, a la seasonal affective disorder. the morning exercise gets your blood moving, your neurochemicals/hormones/etc convecting, and will help limber you up for the day. be sure to stretch!

Going to sleep at an adequate time, turn off the television, turn off the comp, put the phone on silent, these are all important in getting a good night's sleep. I couldn't figure out why having a big box of flashing light in front of my eyes would interfere with sleep, but cutting it off still seems to help tremendously, lol.

good luck buddy. there's a lot of people out there who make their own prisons each and every day. you can live in a prison of your own making-a morbidly obese body-a prison of drugs-a prison of your guilt-there's many ways people imprison themselves.

Don't be a prisoner. Not to the love of a girlfriend. Not to an unhealthy lifestyle. This is your life, Live it.

good luck.

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle.

But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth.

Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes.

All is a miracle.

-Thich Nhat Hanh
You can take your mindfulness where ever you go, and here is a talk about walking meditation.

Feeling your feet on the ground and the breath in your lungs a few times a day.

Make a time for a few breaths and awareness...
like when you brush your teeth or tie your shoes....
little things...
be present
And when 'brushing your teeth', only be 'brushing your teeth'....

Mindfulness and it's salvation are all around us and inside of us.

Start with little moments and larger non-judgmental awareness will flow naturally.
Listen to the Self that you hear in those moments.

Non-Self/Ego is commonly misunderstood, imo.
We aren't to 'get rid of it'...

We to get to know it...
To gain a deep understanding of our 'Self', and work with it most skillfully.
To 'find the Buddha-nature' that is already part of us....
It's an uncovering of, not extiguishing it, so to speak.

It DOES have a function in this world...
But it's not the goal...

Non-Self and Egolessness, rather, is a wording to help us shift the focus to what that Self and Ego really are in their pure natural form.

There is a 'Self' and the 'No/Non' part is just a method to talk about it....

The Buddhist say it in a 'negative' way,
While Hindus prefer to us to 'positive' language,

That is to say, The Self isn't this.... or the Self is this.... either way... it's to get to know that Self and what it is, even if we arrive from an 'is not' mode.

You understand the difference and what I'm saying?

If you are feeling depressed, trying to rid yourself of Ego/Self might not be a skillful use of the practice... you need to affirm 'who you are' a little as well and see how your Light shines....

Your 'Self' is a piece of the functioning Cosmos....
Get to understand it correctly... (read about right understanding one of the 'folds' in the '8 fold path'

But don't try to kill it or snuff it out....

Go to the Library and pick up ANY Thich Nhat Hahn book, large or small....
He has a 'hugging' way of writing where you feel what he says and know you are loved....
Truly this man is a Boddhisattva returned for our sake.
His style is affirming, up lifting and a hand of help in this world.

Youtube him and listen to what he has to say at least... he's amazing.
And if you want to get more into Buddhism, submit and delve deeper into the practice...
Rev's suggestion to go to a group/sangha/meditation circle is GREAT.
Also, keep an eye out for Yoga class that are hopefully free on the University.

Try to create some intentionality in your life.
Make a 'schedule' if you have to,
Living freely is good... but orderliness can help us 'get a grip' and be a good base for healthy living practices.

Keep in touch man... you know where to find me if you need some help.
Also... that little monk down there... that is a link to Dharma talks, and maybe you'll listen to one or two that really touch you.

Peace begins within.
SageTree

PS.
This is an easy meditation you can do anywhere. It's a method taught by Thich Nhat Hahn.
(You don't need the bell btw )

first off, Sage... ive been awake for a long time so i will read this tomorrow i promise.

In the meantime i have a question for you people

One of you, i think ellis, said how i need to do this for myself and not "be saved" by a girl or w/e.
Is it wrong if a girl is like motivation to get it done for myself lol?

Will that backfire on me somehow lol?
Like im not doing it for her at all, but like i wanna be fit and stuff for many reasons, but to attract a mate... that is definitely pretty high on the list lol? Im still doing this for myself. like whats the harm if it is a lil more motivation lol.
A boost in motivation could definitely be used right now ...

like im just sayin... just met a cool girl. im gonna go for it. That being said, im also incapable of having one night stand type relationships lol.

Idk i just feel all motivated. Probably false pussy motivation that will leave me crippled and lonely again, but i think ill be alright. Im doing it for me 100%.

she is so hott too omg. Even if i thought it was a horrible idea i wouldnt be able to resist tbh.
