Our new baby

Well, after two weeks, we had to take Lily back to the vet to get her staples out. I had looked at our vets facebook page and they had a video of two little kittens for adoption. When I showed my wife she thought it would be good for us to get one... we have been having a hard time dealing with Jasmine's death. I have to rank it as one of two, of the most horrible days of my life.

They had a boy and a girl, and I opted for the boy, my wife has never had a boy, or a cat for that matter, except since we have been together. When we got to the vet, right away the vet techs wanted to know which ones we wanted to see. I had written one tech, I know better than the rest, on facebook, before we got there, so they knew we were thinking about it. After Lily had her staples out, they brought the boy and girl into the room with us. Lily was still in her carrier...I picked up the boy, and he immediately started making bread on my chest and nuzzling his face into my beard.

We had to think about it, but I wrote the vet tech that night and told her we wanted the boy. Good thing, the girl had been adopted out after we left that Friday. I went and picked him up, and brought him home, not even going close to Lily with the carrier.

We named him Jethro, and he has been staying in our bedroom for 3 weeks now. That has been an experience I hate leaving him alone in there so much, but try to go in and play with him when I can, but also make sure I pay Lily plenty of attention. He seems to wait until we go to bed, and is wound up like a spring, wanting to play, attacking our feet under the covers...not too fun, seeing as he bites and scratches, not too bad though.

I have been letting him and Lily catch glimpses of each other and tried feeding them snacks on either side of the door. It didn't go too great, Lily would get upset and run off and leave her snacks, which she loves. I swapped rooms with them a few times, so they could get used to each other's scent. Finally this week, I brought Jethro into the room and held him where Lily could see him. She hissed and growled a little, not bad. I decided to push more, so today, I did the same, but let Jethro run around in the living room, while Lily was sleeping in a chair in the dining room.

When my wife got home, I let him out again, and we left him out for a few hours. Lily is teaching him, who is boss, hissing and growling when he pushes her limits, but she hasn't tried to swat or even touch him. I started noticing, when he went too far, and she hissed, he would just lay down on his belly, like the sphinx, and not do much of anything, like showing his submission.

I still don't like keeping them inside, but it seems we don't have a choice. Lily has wanted to go out a few times, but she doesn't try to make a mad dash or anything...but poor girl is so bored, just laying around sleeping, or looking out the window. She has gotten too old for the baby toys we got them when they were younger. She won't pay them any attention, so I hope her and Jethro can play together eventually...So here is a pic of Jethro

They get used to being indoors. My cat is indifferent or even runs away from open doors. I think they get more needy being indoors but they're out of danger.

I guess I try to look at it from my perspective, I couldn't stand being indoors 24/7. Lily and Jasmine were constantly playing, looking for bugs and lizards, or just lounging on the porch with us.

One reason I hate winter, I can't get outside at long stretches...or rainy periods like right now. I'm climbing the walls by the second day.

I wish we could afford one of those Catios...I ain't a carpenter for crap, so no way I could build one. Carpentry is just something I have never been able to get the hang of...

They're plenty happy indoors, especially with a buddy around. Ideally I'd like to let my cat outside but unfortunately there are asshole humans out there who don't give a shit if they run over a cat. Some even try. I also live in an area where a wild animal could be strolling thru which could be deadly. I also have all kinds of little varmints I feed on my deck which my cat actually likes to watch them eat thru the screen door. Giving the cat a life of leisure and luxury(for them)is hardly a torturous experience.
