What you're thinking about is probably hydrocortisone cream. I think you can buy it at 1 percent (perhaps twice that), over-the-counter. Benadryl cream is supposed to work about as well, but that hasn't been my experience with the cream formulation.
I'd recommend almost anything over the bear grease/licorice root stuff. Although licorice root is known to have anti-inflammatory effects, it's said to be dangerous to take if you have high blood pressure. But more than anything, I would really advise against going out and finding a bear and dragging it home, all just to render down that good ole' bear fat for the recipe. Most bears feel a certain attachment to that fat, since they need it for winter-time. They might even use harsh bear language to stop you. But if you are dead-set determined to use genuine animal fat, you need not abandon all hope. I'll bet you could get some decent deer fat by sitting on the side of the road while the neighborhood deer try to figure out when to jump in front of oncoming cars. If I understand correctly, no license is necessary to verbally encourage them, like coaching them, you know: "..... JUMP NOW!... Not then, I meant THEN!... Tarnation, don't you do anything yer told??"" Bottom line is a solid grounding in deer psychology is useful in acquiring a decent supply of deer fat in the fall. (By the way, don't try this in the later winter, or you will just upset the skinny deer). And a garden with licorice plants in it. Or other kinds, if you know what I mean.... What, you think I'm being foolish? Not if you inhaled the vapors of whatever it was I did tonight. Nitey-nite... |

I developed Excema last year from taking acutane in combination with a few other things. It only appeared on my hands, not my palms, I would just get these gnarly ass rashes, but they hurt as fuck sometimes. thanks for the tips and shit i'll be sure to try some of that shit out when my skin gets all dry and disgusting again in the winter =p.

I've noticed that a sick bear or deer will have a reddish fat.
The very young deer will have a whitish fat. During the rut (Bucks), the fat changes to a yellowish shade.

This is a wonderful thread, full of helpful knowledge anyone can benefit from knowing, and thank you for all of the contributions.
On another note, this forum does not welcome hostility, name calling or the playing of devils advocate, so let's not do that anymore in here. Much appreciated. ASG

My kids had very, very severe eczema when they were little. We tried EVERYTHING. My son was in the ER many times due to this and hospitalized due to related asthma. The closest thing to working was some natural stuff that we had to apply to bandages and then apply to the affected area (which was his entire body- he even had it on his face and very bad). We didn't sleep nights. It was horrible. Fortunately, they only get a mild case every once in a while now (THANK GOD!!!!)
Where on earth would you get bear fat? Is it alright to kill bears? I would have definitely tried it if I'd had known about it. I would have tried ANYTHING and everything (and did). So... if it works, do pass it on. Maybe it will work for some others. I'm a bit skeptical of something working for every case of eczema as I became close to an expert on the subject .We had both of our children tested for allergies. My daughter was only allergic to cats and dust mites. My son was allergic to everything under the sun including food allergies of milk, eggs, shell fish, and peanuts. The end of his eczema did NOT correlate with knocking these allergens out of his diet. I have been told that it is an immune system issue.

Bear fat can be acquired from almost any Native Community, some buy off the net.......one could contact their local Hunters Association.
http://www.bottlebooks.com/bearoilstory/bearsoil.htm What I do is to trim the fat of all meat. Then, using a cast iron pot or stainless, (do NOT use aluminum, as it will taint anything whether you're going to eat what's cooked or not), turn the fat into "oil" by slowly cooking it. You want to run your exhaust fan and do NOT cover the pot, as you don't want any moisture in the "oil." Once the fat is melted, I strain it through multi-layers of cheesecloth into clean coffee cans, etc. Once cooled, you can preserve it by freezing it. To make a good cold weather patch lube, melt the "oil" and then melt 20% beeswax into it. Stir well, and poor into a clean jar, tin, etc. What I've found is that the beeswax preserves the bear oil, i.e., it won't turn rancid.

So, have you experienced or witnessed anyone experience results from this (PARTICULARLY if they had SEVERE eczema)? There was no worse time in my life. It hurts to see your babies miserable. It impeded their development and effected their sleep which in turn effected their immune systems which made them more susceptible to other types of illnesses (many of which can be knocked out by GRAPEFRUIT SEED EXTRACT... for anyone suffering from any type of bronchial infection, strep, ear infection... really any kind of infection; take 30 drops GSE with a little orange juice 2-3x/ day. It will knock it out just as quickly as an antibiotic, no trip to the doctor, and no wreaking havoc on the intestinal tract).

Eczema
My joking post (about Yogi and BooBoo) was not meant to minimize the suffering of your child or your anxiety about it, my friend. I was born with a severe bleeding disorder that causes severe pain so have learned to use humor to deal with my own pain and fear and/or to sometimes help prompt a smile in others dealing with health issues. Of course the timing is critical; when folks are worried about their children my type of response is unnecessarily insensitive. My two kids are now in their 20s, so I sometimes forget how much joking about pain can offend those who must watch their young sufferer. My apologies.
And as I've said before, Pharm Girl, your input is fascinating and eye-opening. I would never presume to hunt a bear for its fat, even though there are more in evidence today than have been seen in decades. Thank you for expanding my world-view, and for sharing age-old knowledge that might otherwise be lost in today's hi-tech world. I'll do my best to protect your identity from wildlife protection vigilantes. (Not too hard since I don't know who you are!) Hempophiliac Last edited by hempophiliac; 10-08-2008 at 06:24 PM.
