Question seeking home remedy for insomnia

So, ever since I quit opiates in 2007, I've had really bad insomnia. Smoking helped at first, but has stopped working. I take 20mg of melatonin at night, and usually that works, but hasn't for the past few weeks. Not even sex works for me these days.

Does anyone have any home remedies for insomnia they want to share? I don't drink alcohol, so that's out of the question. I'm willing to try almost anything at this point.

Thanks!

what kind of sleep problem do you have?
is it having trouble falling asleep initially? or having trouble staying asleep?

if it is falling asleep, then first and foremost i would suggest that you make sure you spend you waking hours properly. Wake up nice and early, everyday regardless of how much sleep you get, being active during the day so you are tired, laying down at an idealy consistent time in a totally dark room to sleep.
If you dont set your life this way, then you are bound to be perpetually building tolerances to various drugs and developing more sleep problems.

If you are living properly and still cant fall asleep, then Doxylamine is a good option. It is the ingredient in Unisom (US) and like i think maybe nyquil? you can get it by itself with some generic brand legally off the shelves at any pharmacy or supermarket even. doxylamine succinate.

Idk if i would take it all that long term though. Really taking any kind of sleep aid is just dooming yourself to future failure. Eventually they stop working and you are up shits creek without a shit paddle to paddle shit.

If you problem is Staying asleep..... then i dont really have any advice. That shit is brutal. After almost a decade bout with methadone, and a lifetime of opiates, my father cannot stay asleep for more than an hour or two. It has been like 9 months now totally clean and not much has changed. brutal.
(by the way, this is the longest time my father has been fully clean since he starting getting high in his early teens. He didnt fuck around with any drugs or alchy in that past 9 years, but was on methadone maintnence. Now he is on nothing.)
he is probably gonna end up going back on methadone honestly though, if this sleeping problem doesnt lessen a bit soon...

so keep that in mind the next time you think about wanting to do drugs again man. You can eventually hit a point where even if you want to be clean and have no desire to do drugs at all, you can be forced into it just by being driven desperate by shitty sleep problems...

but yeah, doxylamine. check it out.
If you were taking only melatonin and it was working, then this should do the trick no problem. Just take one.

goodluck man

1. Start exercising. Cardio is best for wearing out your body. You get added health benefits. Seriously start exercising.

2. Meditation. Take 20 minutes before you go to bed to practice relaxation exercises, relaxe your breathing. The mind is much more powerful than the body.

Meditation - Stress Management and Relaxation Techniques from Mind Tools

3. Dont go to bed when you arent tired. If you know that you are just going to lay there for hours at least use that time to spend wearing yourself out. Read, put on some entertainment, do ANYTHING besides just laying in bed with your eyes closed.

Im also a major insomniac and this helps me. With the power of your mind you can accomplish anything. If you actually do these three things you should see some major change.

He should at least try some OTC sleep aids. its better than getting back on opiates.

My type of insomnia is the early waking variety. I don't have much of a problem getting to sleep, it's the staying asleep that gets me.

I'm due to return to school soon, and that means getting up at 4am again, to make a 7am train. I don't drive, and it's a 2 mile walk to the train station, so I'm getting my exercise. It's just that it's dark when I go to bed, and dark when I wake up, so my poor pineal gland doesn't naturally produce enough melatonin, hence the supplement.

I'm looking into different types of herbal teas. Any suggestions?

well mine is definitely not the stay asleep problem, once im out i have no problem staying out for extended periods of time.

my problem is more getting into the mental state of relaxation. even doing stuff that relaxes most people wont get me there, like reading a book.
