Raids Net Pounds of Pot-Laced Candy

Raids Net Pounds of Pot-Laced Candy By Angela Hill

It looks like candy, but check the label on the Keef Kat or the Pot Tarts: "This product contains cannabis and is for medical purposes only." Hundreds of boxes of such pot-laced candy, treats and soda pop — all with labels mimicking name-brand products — plus thousands of marijuana plants, $150,000 in cash and several weapons were seized Thursday in five simultaneous Drug Enforcement Administration raids in Oakland, Emeryville and Lafayette. Authorities called it the largest West Coast manufacturing and distribution operation of its type.

Goodbye, munchies. Federal agents raided three warehouses and what they described as a "candy factory" Thursday morning, seizing hundreds of boxes of sweets and soft drinks spiked with THC, the compound that gives marijuana its potency. The raids, which included the Lafayette home of the business owner, shut down the largest distributor of medicinal marijuana snacks in the western states, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency officials said.

Maple Sugar Hashish Candy
Starting in the 1860s, the Ganja Wallah Hasheesh Candy Company made maple sugar hashish candy, which soon became one of the most popular treats in America.

For 40 years, it was sold over the counter and advertised in newspapers, as well as being listed in the catalogs of Sears-Roebuck, as a totally harmless, delicious, and fun candy.

Raided Pot 'Edibles' Trouble Advocates By John Simerman
Source: Contra Costa Times March 18, 2006 California *
A day after federal agents seized thousands of marijuana plants and a booty of pot-laced candy and soda pop in raids on warehouses in Emeryville and Oakland, local medical cannabis advocates reacted coolly -- bitter at another federal plunder on a substance the state deems legal for the sick, but leery of an operation that packaged its products to mimic popular brands of sweets.
The raids on a business called Beyond Bomb netted some 10,000 rooted plants, thousands of tiny plant "clones," as well as boxes of candy and soda with take-off names such as "Pot Tarts," "Toka-Cola," "Stoney Rancher" and "Munchy Way," with labels to match.

Am I the only one who thinks that this sort of thing is a bad idea? It makes the legalization movement look bad.

Maybe I should rephrase this: am I the only one who thinks we shouldn't be selling this shit to kids?

East Bay DEA Raids Take Out Marijuana Candy Supplier 3/17/06

DEA agents raided a building in the heart of Oaksterdam, Oakland's cannabis friendly near-downtown neighborhood, as well as locations in Emeryville and Lafayette, and arrested 13 people Thursday in what they called "a sophisticated marijuana operation" involving large grows as well as the production of marijuana candy and soft drinks. The main target was Kenneth Affolter, 39, who is allegedly the main man in a company called Beyond Bomb that manufactured the candies.

Agents said they seized thousands of plants from four different grows, a large amount of currency, three weapons, and hundreds of pot-laced candies and drinks. The candies were packaged to parody well-known brands and included products called "Buddafingers," "Rasta Reece's," "Keef Kat," and "Pot Tarts." Soft drinks were packaged under names including "Bong's Root Beer" and "Toka-Cola."

Such products are widely available through (perhaps now not so) mysterious channels in various medical marijuana outlets and cannabis-friendly businesses in the Bay Area and beyond, and provide an alternative to the inhalation of marijuana smoke for people who cannot or will not tolerate it.

"This can be tragic," said DEA spokesman Javier Pena. "A young child or adult could eat one of these and drink one of the sodas. As you can tell, they mimic the brand names."

And now Mr. DEA Man has taken down the candy man.

Unfortunately probably not B Rob, It sounds typically like someone twisting it that way, they dispensed to buyers clubs and only DEAth warthogs are spouting this highly overdone "kid" garbage. Unless the kid has a doctors script, they won't get past the Pinkertons... Not like over the counter speed and downers they can shoplift in "drug" stores, or booze in grocery stores or by Priests at Sunday mass. Or more than likely do to the paranoia created by DEAth lemmings, the kids will die of huffing household products right under the busybodies noses. Not to mention it was AMA approved medicine for kids before the 1930's Fascists...

You have to admit, it sure *looks* like it's meant to be sold to kids.

Eh, maybe I'm just crazy. Definitely a possibility.

You've been over exposed with propaganda to think that way. Such a ruckus over this candy that is not advertised and sold only for medicinal purposes behind security guarded doors. Where is the outcry by DEAth over the booze, steroids and tobacco that is advertised, has proven harmful effects and along with OTC meds and pollution takes out more kids than polio. It only looks like its meant for stoners. Many of whom are legally permitted. If this was advertised at the superbowl then maybe it might be something to complain about. If the rest of the garbage was also discussed. Most of the drugs sold on tv have deadly and debilitating side effects yet no ones bothered. Thousands of hours of violence on TV and the only thing the busybodies worry about is janet jacksons titty. Priorities aren't Bushits best suit either. He is good at hiring bumbling thugs though. I'm sure Angel put up a good fight when they hauled her ass off to the cages.

Beyond Bomb's Dandy Candy

Dea Says Pot Candy Is Not Dandy -- 12 Arrested
Henry K. Lee | San Francisco Chronicle | 03/17/2006

Group accused of making drug-laced treats, beverages

Federal drug agents raided warehouses in Oakland and Emeryville and arrested a Lafayette man and 11 other people Thursday on charges that they made candy and soft drinks resembling popular goodies but laced with marijuana.

Authorities say Kenneth Affolter, 39, of Lafayette is the leader of the outfit, which called itself Beyond Bomb and allegedly manufactured a range of pot-laced treats with names Buddahfingers, Munchy Way, Rasta Reece's and Puff-a-Mint Pattie.

"This is the biggest candy marijuana factory that we have seen on the West Coast," said Javier Pena, special agent in charge of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in San Francisco.

"There was a great deal of sophistication that involved different labels, pretty much knockoffs of the real thing. This is potentially dangerous for kids and people who don't know what they're eating and what they're drinking."

The defendants are to appear today in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on charges of distribution of marijuana.

Drug agents searched two adjoining warehouses on Yerba Buena Avenue where the marijuana candy was produced. They also searched a warehouse on Adeline Street, Affolter's Lafayette home and 1740 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland, a location associated with the Compassionate Caregivers Club, a medical marijuana dispensary, authorities said.

During the raids, investigators seized about $100,000 in cash, between 4,000 and 5,000 marijuana plants, marijuana-growing equipment, three weapons and hundreds of sodas and candy laced with marijuana, Pena said.

The doctored treats were packaged for shipment throughout the West Coast, authorities said.

The investigation began in October when DEA agents in Oakland learned of the operation. On Thursday, agents seized numerous candies and drinks with labels including, Keef Kat, Stoney Ranchers, Puffsi and Toka-Cola.

DEA Seizes Pot Tarts, Toka-Cola

Thousands Of Marijuana Plants Seized

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Authorities confiscated marijuana-laced candy and soft drinks made to look like popular brands during a California drug bust Thursday.

Agents also seized four indoor marijuana growing operations, between 4,000 and 5,000 marijuana plants, $100,000 in cash and three weapons, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"What so many people don't realize is that innocent children will somehow get their hands on these products and think they are just normal candy or soft drinks, thus making this action not only illegal, but potentially tragic," Special Agent in Charge Javier Peña said.

The investigation began last October, when officials at the DEA Oakland Resident Office obtained information that someone was operating "Beyond Bomb," a manufacturer of marijuana candy in Oakland.

The marijuana-laced candy and other edibles manufactured by the company mimic the name and appearance of well-known name brand candies and products.

Some of the product labels seized by investigators include Stoney Ranchers, Munchy Way, Rasta Reese's, Buddafingers, Pot Tarts, Double Puff Oeo, Tri-Chrome Crunch, Keef Kat, Twixed, Budtella, Puff-A-Mint Pattie, Puffsi, Bong's Root Beer and Toka-Cola.

Drug Ring Sold Pot-Laced Candy, Soda MARCH 17, 2006

Pot Tarts, Toka-Cola, Munchy Ways seized in DEA raids

A California drug operation manufactured marijuana-laced candy and soft drinks that were packaged to resemble popular products like Jolly Ranchers, Milky Way, and Pop Tarts.

The pot ring, busted yesterday by Drug Enforcement Administration agents, was headquartered in Oakland and allegedly headed by Kenneth Affolter, 39, who was one of 12 alleged dealers nabbed.

DEA raids at indoor pot-growing facilities turned up the marijuana-infused products, which carried labels such as Toka-Cola, Pot Tarts, Puff-A-Mint Pattie, Stoney Ranchers, Munchy Way, and Buddahfinger.

A DEA spokesperson told TSG that the pot was baked into chocolate bars and hard candies and that the soda contained concentrated hash oil. A label on the ring's Nestle Crunch knockoff describes the item's ingredients as "milk chocolate with crisped rice dipped in hash oil rich chocolate."

Some of the seized items can be seen in the evidence photos on the following pages. In a statement, DEA agent Javier Pena noted that Affolter's pot ring, which operated under the name Beyond Bomb, was "not only illegal, but potentially tragic," since "innocent children will somehow get their hands on these products and think they are just normal candy or soft drinks."
