A Tokin’ Holiday
By Caroline Alexander and Zachary Broussard *
Source: LSU Reveille April 20, 2006 Louisiana
Weed. Pot. Reefer. Ganja. Dope. Mary Jane. Schwag. Cannabis. Chronic. Artists from Willie Nelson to Dr. Dre have inundated American pop culture with these terms.
But even with the abundance of marijuana references in art, literature, music and film, many people woke up this morning without realizing today’s significance. Pot smokers nationwide acknowledge today — April 20 or “4-20” — as the day to celebrate marijuana use.

Isla Vista Residents Fire Up for 4/20 By David Schachner
Source: Daily Nexus April 20, 2006 California
Allegedly, 4:20 p.m. marks the end of the exhausting detention period at some American junior or senior high schools. Some believe 420 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which marijuana burns. Others claim that at 4:20, the hands on an analog clock line up in a downward angle giving the appearance that the face of the clock has a smoking instrument in its “mouth.”

Profs, Police in Dark About 4/20 Holiday By Ross Hager
Source: Arizona Daily Wildcat April 20, 2006 Arizona*
Although professors and police don't seem to be aware of it, some students are choosing to celebrate National Get High Day today - a celebration that might make students absent from class. The idea of 4/20 originated in California in the 1970s after a group of teenagers began meeting at 4:20 p.m. every day to smoke marijuana, according to Wikipedia online encyclopedia.

Hazy, Lazy Day for Stoners By Roxana Hadadi
Source: Diamondback April 20, 2006 Maryland*
Junior communication major Hassan Afzal started celebrating his now-favorite holiday at the age of 15, meeting with a group of friends after school to hang out and relax. And after six years of tradition, weeks of preparation and 364 days of waiting, Afzal is set to have one of the best days of the year. It’s too late for Easter and too early for Christmas, and instead of curling up with the fam, Afzal will be smoking up, munching on barbecue and chilling with his friends — the plan for many a pot smoker on the campus.

A Smoking Proposition
By the Daily Campus Ed Board*
Source: Daily Campus April 20, 2006 Texas
Many students have a special affinity for today, April 20. While some may be thinking that it’s because today is the first day of the Taurus astrological cycle, Ed Board’s thinking about something a little more green…and smoky. While debate on the origins of 420 runs rampant online, Ed Board is going with the explanation on the High Times Web site.

Students Celebrate Drug Holiday By Arielle Gomberg
Source: Daily Targum April 19, 2006 New Jersey *
Marijuana smokers everywhere know 4:20 is a time of day to get high, and for them, April 20, more than any other day, is a holiday. "[I'll be] calling every pot-head I know to wish them a happy holiday because this is our national holiday," said Dovid Goldman, a Livingston junior. "In this age of attempted legalization, it's important for us to have our day," he said.

It's, Like, a Pot Fest, Dude By Matt Peiken
Source: St. Paul Pioneer Press April 19, 2006 Minnesota*
The CHEEBA Club's celebration of marijuana is 'part entertainment (free food and dodge ball), but it's also about social justice.' So, like, check this out. These dudes at Macalester College are throwing this righteous party Thursday. They're calling it CHEEBAdanza — "the Twin Cities premier marijuana festival." Says so right on the green flier. This isn't one of those mediocre pot fests — it's A-grade all the way. Excellent.

Marijuana Rally By Beckie Rosillo
Source: Western Front April 18, 2006 Washington*
A politically-motivated, six-foot-tall bong pipe is not something most Western students would normally find in the center of Red Square, or anywhere for that matter. Members of the WWU Libertarians club will protest by displaying the bong pipe from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in Red Square to show their support for the fight to legalize marijuana.

4 + 20
Four and twenty years ago, I come into this life,
the son of a woman and a man who lived in strife.
He was tired of being poor and he wasn't into selling door to door
and he worked like the devil to be more.

A different kind of poverty now upsets me so.
Night after sleepless night, I walk the floor and I want to know- why am I so alone?
Where is my woman can I bring her home? Have I driven her away? Is she gone?

Morning comes to sunrise and I'm driven to my bed.
I see that it is empty and there's devils in my head.
I embrace the many colored beast. I grow weary of the torment, can there be no peace?
And I find myself just wishing that my life would simply cease.

Sing a song of sixpence
A pocket full of rye
Four and twenty blackbirds
Get baked, have some pie
When the pie is eaten
Today, we will sing

It's one of the best days of the year when you can see people all over the place with red eyes, and you just know they are celebrating.

Preparing for Pot Smoking By Casey Freeman
Source: Colorado Daily April 20, 2006 CU And Boulder *
Smoking pot at Farrand Field on April 20 is a tradition that CU officials, the police department and marijuana activists can agree upon. They all say: don't do it.
“We do not approve, we do not like this event and we do not like the image of the school that it shows,” said Barrie Hartman, interim spokesman for CU-Boulder. “This is not just a CU thing. It's a national thing,” Hartman continued.

Exploring the cultural history of marijuana on the day (and time) it matters the most

The problem with writing about pot is that due diligence dictates that you get baked beforehand. So … Check. Is there any food around here?

Marijuana is a drug plant. If you smoke it, you get lit, and then everything is different for a bit. It’s an occasional habit for many, for some, it’s a lifestyle, and others rebuke it with mighty fervor.

Criminalized by a number of federal laws starting with the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act, weed used to be thought of as an industrial plant. Harvested and processed to make cheap paper, cloth and rope, Washington grew it, his buddy Jefferson wrote on it and nearly 200 years later, our brave boys used hemp parachutes to safely come down behind enemy lines.

Reefer Madness

It’s very versatile. Smoke it. Cook with it. Roll it up. And then get officially baked. Pot. Love it or hate it, marijuana keeps our lives smokin’. News Editor Peter Koht dives in and investigates the weed of all weeds.
