Summer of Love: 40 Years Later
Summer of Love: 40 Years Later By Joel Selvin
Source: San Francisco Chronicle May 20, 2007 San Francisco, CA* By the time the fabled Summer of Love hit San Francisco 40 years ago, the party was already over in the Haight-Ashbury. Yet the mythology of that summer in 1967 has never disappeared. The San Francisco hippie, dancing in Golden Gate Park with long hair flowing, has become as much of an enduring American archetype as the gunfighters and cowboys who roamed the Wild West. More importantly, the rise of '60s counterculture has had a significant impact on our culture today. The Summer of Love resonates in strip mall yoga classes, pop music, visual art, fashion, attitudes toward drugs, the personal computer revolution, and the current mad dash toward the greening of America. While some of the counterculture's dreams came true, others, particularly the movement's idealistic politics, evaporated like the sweet-smelling pot smoke that saturated the air that summer Continued...cannabis news/22989 Don’t Go Back To San Francisco By Michael Walker * CN Source: New York Times June 09, 2007 Los Angeles, CA* Shake the stems and seeds out of the Persian rug and put some flowers in your hair: the Summer of Love is 40 years old. The patchouli-scented commemoration has fixated on San Francisco, the Summer of Love’s blissful nexus. What wretched Midwestern longhair-in-waiting in the summer of ’67 could resist the siren of Scott McKenzie’s Top 5 hit, “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)”? Untold VW microbuses from Ann Arbor to Amherst chugged west on little more than the song’s purple-hazy promise: the tribes were gathering, and they were gathering in San Francisco. It's my way of paying tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Yes, it was 40 years ago today that Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play. Actually, it was 40 years ago last Friday, June 1, 1967, that the Beatles released "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" in the U.K., commencing a summer that would change everything. Quite a collection of resources.
To be a critical asshole, here are the two fundamental ways in which the hippie movement fucked up: 1) Drugs - The hippe took drugs in order to achieve some kind of spiritual enlightenment. In some ways, drugtaking became perceived as attaining a higher level of conciousness. The liberation of the mind was part of a larger social liberation of different peoples and colors. Drugs became revolutionary. Today we know that it's simply about getting high/stoned, and nothing more. The hippies thought they were being revolutionary, when in reality they were just trying to have a good time. This is a cynical viewpoint, yes, but at least somewhat accurate. 2) Peace - Demonstrations by the hippie movement were peaceful in nature, to a fault. While nonviolence is acceptable on a moral basis, it is not a practical means of achieving social change. Destabilization, agitation, and destruction are the quickest and most effective ways to bring about equality. If we really want to stop America's dependence on oil, picketing in front of refineries won't work. Kindnapping and holding oil barons hostage under gunpoint will. These are not the most cynical things said about hippies. Some claim that the '60s were just a repeat of the '30s, in the sense of the cycle of prosperity: A world war ends, a boom period occurs, then the inevitable downfall with rising tensions and strife. This a pattern that has been seen throughout history. But I'm not going to start equating the liberation of black people and its subsequent "difficulties" with anything as near as bad as the Great Depression. To accurately judge the contributions of the hippie movement, all you have to do is point to one single fact: Adjusted for inflation, the poverty rate, as defined by the U.S. government (which, as we all know, would be likely to alter facts to present a better picture of America) has not gone down in this country since 1968. (Remember, this is the fucking U.S. government. If they could somehow argue that it has gone down, they would. Probably a more accurate picture of poverty is that it HAS gone up). There was tremendous progress before that, actually. But then the hippies started to assemble in San Francisco in 1967, bringing with them the ideals of peace (permanent appeasement), love (hedonistic fucking), and dope (self-explanatory). So what we're left with after that orgy of fucking, doping, and the occasional protest march is the same goddamn fucking shitty economic structure we had forty fucking goddamn years ago. But they're music's still good.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country... Corporations have bee enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." Abraham Lincoln, November 12, 1864 Be on gaurd against science without humanity, Politics without principle, Knowledge without character, Wealth without work, Commerce without morality, Pleasure without conscience, And worship without sacrifice. Ghandi Italian fascism and German Nazism had their admirers within the U.S. business community and the corporate owned press. Bankers, publishers, and industrialists, including the likes of Henry Ford, traveled to Rome and Berlin to pay homage, receive medals, and strike profitable deals. Many did their utmost to advance the Nazi war effort, sharing military industrial secrets and engaging in secret transactions with the Nazi government, even after the United States entered the war. During the 1920s and early 1930s, major publications like Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, Saturday Evening Post, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and Christian Science Monitor hailed Mussolini as the man who rescued Italy from anarchy and radicalism. In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty, He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. Thomas Jefferson, 1814 "Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith . . . we need believing people." Adolf Hitler, April 26, 1933, from a speech made during negotiations leading to the Nazi Vatican Concordant of 1933 "The mission of the Christian Coalition is simple," says Pat Robertson. It is "to mobilize Christians -- one precinct at a time, one community at a time -- until once again we are the head and not the tail, and at the top rather than the bottom of our political system." Robertson predicts that "the Christian Coalition will be the most powerful political force in America by the end of this decade." And, "We have enough votes to run this country...and when the people say, 'We've had enough,' we're going to take over!" --Pat Robertson "Arbitrary and capricious" is legal language that was used by DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis Young in 1988 to conclude that DEA was obligated under the Controlled Substances Act to reschedule marijuana as a prescription medicine. DEA Chief Administrator Robert Bonner proceeded to arbitrarily and capriciously disregard Judge Young's well researched and reasoned decision, which the Act allowed him to do.) While nonviolence is acceptable on a moral basis, it is not a practical means of achieving social change. Achieving social change? Change from a dollar maybe. Perpetuation is the name of the war games, not change. Can't make a buck selling million dollar smart bombs to flower haired kids. Need the hate to summon up the demons to hurl on unsuspecting targets daring to leave the herd mentalities. Or for cheap labor. Since replaced by the drug war and prison slave labor. Racism, classism and Ganjaism do their part as well as McCarthyism and Nixonism and 40 years of CIA Dyncorps Bushisms and his puppets Nan & Ronnie. Perpetuating prohibition to maintain the Fascism of their forefathers. Manipulation and censorship and programmed news and schools keeps the diseases and addictions and social injustices "treated" and dysfunction is maintained for a successful quarterly dividend. Cures and Prevention sought by the hippies would cost A merakins jobs overseas over seeing the NAFTA GATT sweatshops. Drugs? White Powders are taboo for a Naturalist. Pushed by the Pharmaceutical Industry Bush Cheney invest in. Can't snort a coca leaf or inject poppies or drink hops and barley without loads of paraphernalia. Ganja spits in their face by smoking the dried bud all you need is sunshine and a home made bowl. Oil Meat Cotton Booze and the pesticide and herbicide and fertilizer biz. All shared scitless about Hemp and Ganja competition horning in on their monopolies. Prohibition was and continues to be the "hazard" in drugs. The same prescribed medications are done safely each day. Prohibition sets the scene for adulterations, inconsistent dosages and violence. It wasn't the hippies, it was the Fascists we "evaporated" in double double ewe eleven. Can't be any today if we evaporated them. Love is not sex and it doesn't sell like sex. Fucking is a capitalist commodity extension of socialist masturbation. Self gratification, alone with one or 5 or whatever. Selling the paraphernalia of sex is not hedonistic, it's down right Ward and June Cleaver/Judaea Christian romance and the missionary position among opposites to produce future congregations. After shave and perfume, evening gowns and those twins selling Coors. Not free love. Same with STD's as with drug prohibition and today's hookers in legal Nevada vs the streets. In the name of good intentions. Self appointed moralists would rather have the kids dead on a battlefield than alive smoking a joint after non marital sex. Hippies never had a chance yet they have left an indelible mark reminding us it ain't over till the Fascists swing. Most of the so called "underground" was "undercover" Hoover to Walters, sabotaging Truth Justice and the American way. DdC "Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering, Nazi Air Force (Luftwaffe) commander, the Nuremberg Trials ![]() Got Hemp? 1936: DuPont obtains a patent license to manufacture synthetic "plastic fibers" from German industrial giant I.G. Farben Corporation. The patent license is obtained as part Germany's reparation payments to the United States after World War I. A few years later, I.G. Farben manufactures deadly Zyklon-B gas, used in Nazi death camps to murder millions of Jews (along with many homosexuals and drug users). DuPont owned and financed approximately 30% of Hitler's I.G. Corps, the military-industrial backbone of the fascist Third Reich. SCAPEGOATING - Blaming social problems on a cultural, racial, or behaviorial group. PREJUDICE - Selling the public on the idea that all members of the targeted group are 'bad' people. NO PUBLIC DEBATE - "These people have no right to have their viewpoiunt aired." and " Anyone who disagrees or questions us must be one of them!" PROTECT OUR CHILDREN - "They corrupt, seduce and or destroy our children." CONFISCATION OF PROPERTY - Property and assets are seized from people who are members of targeted group. Property may be divided between the informer and the state. Summer of Love Had Destructive Consequences By Bill O'Reilly
CN Source: Gwinnett Daily Post July 01, 2007 USA Forty years ago, the United States was a much more conservative place than it is today. Even though the civil rights movement had won some tough victories down south, and Vietnam dissension was heating up, most Americans were still tied to the traditional values of their parents. For example, in my heavily ethnic neighborhood of Levittown, N.Y., if an unmarried girl got pregnant, it was a huge scandal. Rarely was abortion even discussed because most of us were Catholic. The young girl usually got married to the father quickly and quietly. This happened to my cousin and two of my friends. An unwanted pregnancy was a major deal. Summer of Love: Are You Going To San Francisco
CN Source: Economist UK September 01, 2007 San Francisco, CA If the tie-dyed fabric, joss sticks and finger cymbals are not your thing then you should avoid San Francisco at the moment. A flowery-haired throng is expected to attend a free concert in Golden Gate Park on Sunday September 2nd to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the “Summer of Love”. Hippie-era luminaries (survivors, some might say) such as Canned Heat, Country Joe McDonald and Wavy Gravy have promised to appear. Internet rumours that the gathering might be cancelled were reportedly dismissed by the organisers as the work of “Nixon’s retired dirty tricksters”. Continued...cannabis news/23302 ![]() Baby Boomers Try To Recapture Youth at Summer of Love Anniversary By C.W. Nevius sfgate Sunday, September 2, 2007 Excerpt: Of course, the idea that a wave of peace, love and understanding will sweep the nation sounds a little far-fetched. What is more likely, says UC Berkeley psychology Professor Dacher Keltner, is that the interest in the anniversary is Baby Boomers mourning their lost youth. "The obvious example is that, as people reach the last 20 or 30 years of their life, they get profoundly nostalgic for their 20s," Keltner says. However, he adds that the idea that today's generation might mount its own cultural shift is not out of the realm of possibility. Based on what he's seeing in his students, Keltner says, they have moved from the "me" generation to the "we" generation. "I have to say there has been a shift in the undergrads I am seeing here," Keltner says. "They have shifted out of that purely economic interest and are interested in bigger ideas. It's exciting." Excellent post. How I miss the simpler times of 30-35 yrs ago. I missed out on the Summer of Love 1967, with Monterrey Pop Festival & such, being only 13 yrs old at the time.
![]() But even the early 70s were so less complicated. Then the 80s seemed to lean towards $$$ & cocaine...& crack hit the scene, making hallucinogens almost obsolete.
