To be a critical asshole, here are the two fundamental ways in which the hippie movement fucked up:

1) Drugs - The hippe took drugs in order to achieve some kind of spiritual enlightenment. In some ways, drugtaking became perceived as attaining a higher level of conciousness. The liberation of the mind was part of a larger social liberation of different peoples and colors. Drugs became revolutionary. Today we know that it's simply about getting high/stoned, and nothing more. The hippies thought they were being revolutionary, when in reality they were just trying to have a good time. This is a cynical viewpoint, yes, but at least somewhat accurate.

2) Peace - Demonstrations by the hippie movement were peaceful in nature, to a fault. While nonviolence is acceptable on a moral basis, it is not a practical means of achieving social change. Destabilization, agitation, and destruction are the quickest and most effective ways to bring about equality. If we really want to stop America's dependence on oil, picketing in front of refineries won't work. Kindnapping and holding oil barons hostage under gunpoint will.


These are not the most cynical things said about hippies. Some claim that the '60s were just a repeat of the '30s, in the sense of the cycle of prosperity: A world war ends, a boom period occurs, then the inevitable downfall with rising tensions and strife. This a pattern that has been seen throughout history. But I'm not going to start equating the liberation of black people and its subsequent "difficulties" with anything as near as bad as the Great Depression.

To accurately judge the contributions of the hippie movement, all you have to do is point to one single fact: Adjusted for inflation, the poverty rate, as defined by the U.S. government (which, as we all know, would be likely to alter facts to present a better picture of America) has not gone down in this country since 1968. (Remember, this is the fucking U.S. government. If they could somehow argue that it has gone down, they would. Probably a more accurate picture of poverty is that it HAS gone up).

There was tremendous progress before that, actually. But then the hippies started to assemble in San Francisco in 1967, bringing with them the ideals of peace (permanent appeasement), love (hedonistic fucking), and dope (self-explanatory). So what we're left with after that orgy of fucking, doping, and the occasional protest march is the same goddamn fucking shitty economic structure we had forty fucking goddamn years ago.

But they're music's still good.

Manipulation and censorship and programmed news and schools keeps the diseases and addictions and social injustices "treated" and dysfunction is maintained for a successful quarterly dividend. Cures and Prevention sought by the hippies would cost A merakins jobs overseas over seeing the NAFTA GATT sweatshops.

Drugs? White Powders are taboo for a Naturalist. Pushed by the Pharmaceutical Industry Bush Cheney invest in. Can't snort a coca leaf or inject poppies or drink hops and barley without loads of paraphernalia. Ganja spits in their face by smoking the dried bud all you need is sunshine and a home made bowl. Oil Meat Cotton Booze and the pesticide and herbicide and fertilizer biz. All shared scitless about Hemp and Ganja competition horning in on their monopolies. Prohibition was and continues to be the "hazard" in drugs. The same prescribed medications are done safely each day. Prohibition sets the scene for adulterations, inconsistent dosages and violence. It wasn't the hippies, it was the Fascists we "evaporated" in double double ewe eleven. Can't be any today if we evaporated them.

Love is not sex and it doesn't sell like sex. Fucking is a capitalist commodity extension of socialist masturbation. Self gratification, alone with one or 5 or whatever. Selling the paraphernalia of sex is not hedonistic, it's down right Ward and June Cleaver/Judaea Christian romance and the missionary position among opposites to produce future congregations. After shave and perfume, evening gowns and those twins selling Coors. Not free love.

Same with STD's as with drug prohibition and today's hookers in legal Nevada vs the streets. In the name of good intentions. CIVIL LIBERTIES SACRIFICED -
"We must give up some of our freedoms, liberties, and rights in order to combat this menace to society."

LEGAL DESCRIMINATION -
Laws criminalize members of targeted group and they may be denied jobs, the right to own property and/or be restricted as to where they may live or go.

INFORMERS -
Citizens are urged to 'turn in' friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members.

SECRET POLICE -
Non-uniformed police squads set up to wage war on targeted groups utilizing deception, infiltration, espionage and entrapment.

CONFISCATION OF PROPERTY -
Property and assets are seized from people who are members of targeted group. Property may be divided between the informer and the state.

REMOVAL FROM SOCIETY -

Forty years ago, the United States was a much more conservative place than it is today. Even though the civil rights movement had won some tough victories down south, and Vietnam dissension was heating up, most Americans were still tied to the traditional values of their parents.

For example, in my heavily ethnic neighborhood of Levittown, N.Y., if an unmarried girl got pregnant, it was a huge scandal. Rarely was abortion even discussed because most of us were Catholic. The young girl usually got married to the father quickly and quietly. This happened to my cousin and two of my friends. An unwanted pregnancy was a major deal.

Hippie-era luminaries (survivors, some might say) such as Canned Heat, Country Joe McDonald and Wavy Gravy have promised to appear. Internet rumours that the gathering might be cancelled were reportedly dismissed by the organisers as the work of “Nixon’s retired dirty tricksters”.

Excerpt: Of course, the idea that a wave of peace, love and understanding will sweep the nation sounds a little far-fetched. What is more likely, says UC Berkeley psychology Professor Dacher Keltner, is that the interest in the anniversary is Baby Boomers mourning their lost youth.

"The obvious example is that, as people reach the last 20 or 30 years of their life, they get profoundly nostalgic for their 20s," Keltner says.

However, he adds that the idea that today's generation might mount its own cultural shift is not out of the realm of possibility. Based on what he's seeing in his students, Keltner says, they have moved from the "me" generation to the "we" generation.
"I have to say there has been a shift in the undergrads I am seeing here," Keltner says. "They have shifted out of that purely economic interest and are interested in bigger ideas. It's exciting."

Excellent post. How I miss the simpler times of 30-35 yrs ago. I missed out on the Summer of Love 1967, with Monterrey Pop Festival & such, being only 13 yrs old at the time.
But even the early 70s were so less complicated. Then the 80s seemed to lean towards $$$ & cocaine...& crack hit the scene, making hallucinogens almost obsolete.

Based on what? I still know a lot of old hippies who use psychadelics for spiritual journeys. People like Leary and McKenna are still very popular today. People still talk today about weed being a drug which unplugs the mind from standardised thinking. Where's your evidence to support your viewpoint being accurate?

What, so Martin Luther King's marches weren't destabilising, his speeches not agitating? You can be peaceful and effective. Lets compare the peaceful hippy movement to The Weathermen and see who made the most difference.

I know how you feel, man. I was born in '86, so technically I was alive during the birth of thrash metal, and the release of Aliens, Watchmen and the Famicom. Still, not quite the same if you don't remember it.
