Tvert Pushes Pot Smoking at Denver Int Airport

Tvert Pushes Pot Smoking at DIA By James B. Meadow
CN Source: Rocky Mountain News June 25, 2008 Colorado

Tvert, a crusader for legalizing marijuana, has called for pot-smoking lounges in the nation's airports. His reason for doing goes beyond his cannabis liberation mission: He wants to help make flying safer.

"There's been this growing trend of alcohol-related air rage," he said Tuesday, alluding to episodes of drunken passengers creating in-flight disturbances.

Just last week, Christina E. Szele, 35, a New York woman, was accused of drunkenly disrupting a JetBlue flight, punching a flight attendant and screaming curses and racial slurs after she was prevented from smoking. A cigarette, that is.

Szele's outbursts wouldn't have happened if she'd been inhaling instead of imbibing, said Tvert, whose two pro-pot ballot measures have won voter approval in Denver.

"The studies I've seen say that alcohol . . . contributes to violent and aggressive behavior," he said. "The simple thing is to let people make the safer choice to use marijuana, which doesn't contribute to violent behavior."

Turkish Smoking Parlors

World Fairs and International Expositions, from the 1860s through the early 1900s, often featured a popular Turkish Hashish Smoking exposition and concession. Hashish smoking was entirely new for Americans; its effects came on much faster. However, smoking hashish was only about one-third as strong or long lasting as orally ingesting the cannabis extract medicines that even American children were regularly prescribed.

At America’s giant 100-year 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, fair-goers took their friends and family to partake (smoke) at the extremely popular Turkish Hashish Exposition, so as to “enhance” their fair experience.

Le Club Des Haschischins

In Europe, where cannabis had been known for centuries, there was a resurgence of public interest in its euphoriant properties in the nineteenth century. ... a number of artists and writers, who established the famous Club des haschischins: its members included Honore de Balzac,(70) Charles Baudelaire, Henri de Boisdenier, Georges Boissard, Alexandre Dumas (pere), Gustave Flaubert, Theophile Gautier, Victor Hugo, Jacques-Joseph Moreau de Tours, Gerard de Nerval, and many others..

Fans Too Relaxed for Fights

Cannabis Helps Keep Fans Calm
Police also claimed that the availability of cannabis in the Netherlands probably helped to defuse any violence. Scores of ticketless England fans gathered in coffee shops in Eindhoven, where cannabis is sold and smoked, to watch the game, greeting the defeat with mild disappointment and unusually, gentle applause. "It (cannabis) may have helped relax them," Mr Beelan added. "Even the hooligans enjoyed the party - and they told our officers. There were lots of things for fans to do and everybody had a good time."

I would say that on balance, many 'illegal' drugs are less harmful than the two 'legal' drugs available.

Deaths in the United States in a typical year are as follows...

* Alcohol kills about 80,000
* Workplace accidents kill 60,000
* Automobiles kill 40,000
* Cocaine kills about 2,500
* Heroin kills about 2,000
* Aspirin kills about 2,000

The Clash in Colorado! "Lie a little louder Guvner!"

Don't expect an open and honest discussion about the merits of making marijuana possession legal for adults. Instead, expect every possible scare tactic related to children you can imagine. Before our opponents are done, you will think we are trying to make marijuana part of the free lunch program at elementary schools.

And why are our opponents hiding behind children? Perhaps it is because there is no logical reason to punish adults for making the rational choice to use marijuana instead of alcohol.

Outlawing Common Sense

Alcohol, Tobacco Worse Than Drugs

"No drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the sources of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power."
-- P.J. O'Rourke: Writer

Legitimizing Ganja

Starting in the 1860s, the Gunjah Wallah Company made maple sugar hashish candy, which soon became one of the most popular treats in America. For 40 years, it was sold over the counter and advertised in newspapers, as well as being listed in the catalogs of Sears-Roebuck, as a totally harmless, delicious and fun candy.

In a republic like ours, people often think that the proper response to an unjust law is to try to use the political process to change the law, but to obey and respect the law until it is changed. But if the law is itself clearly unjust, and the lawmaking process is not designed to quickly obliterate such unjust laws, then the law deserves no respect — break the law.

Good Ol Mason. I fully respect the dudes overall goal/objective/message, but sometimes wonder if he brings more negative views to the cause than positive. SMALL STEPS Mason. I dont think Denver has still fully accepted the decriminalization of pot in the city yet, surely they are not ready to let ya spark up in the airports. Surely I would love to be in that lounge, but I think these wild ideas with pot just give the antis even more fuel to feed off of. But at least the dude is doing something, even if a tad overboard sometimes, I can dig that.

The Free Denver Airport is Flying Tonight
In the Rocky Mountains campesinos are planting their fields
The ghost of Zapata rides a horse that can still outrun the wind.
While free in the sky high above, nearly clear out of sight
It's the Free Denver Air Lines flyin' tonight.
In the Mile High City a cowboy is cooling his heels.
Remembering that God gave us herbs and the fruits of the fields
But a criminal law that makes outlaws of those seeking light
Yeah the Free Denver Air Port is flyin' tonight!
