Congressional Cannabis Candy Crackdown
Congress Moves Forward On Cannabis 'Candy' Crackdown
NORML July 11, 2008 - Washington, DC, US The Senate Judiciary Committee has approved legislation introduced by Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA) that seeks to enact mandatory minimum penalties for persons found to have manufactured or dispensed edible cannabis products that have been "marketed to appear similar to a candy product." Cannabis-based food products were the targets of a federal DEA investigation in California last year. The edibles, which are preferred by some patients who wish to avoid smoking, had been popular items among some of California's medical cannabis dispensaries prior to the DEA's crackdown. As passed by the Judiciary, Feinstein's proposal - Senate Bill 1211 - would double penalties for anyone who "manufactures, creates, distributes, or possesses with intent to distribute a controlled substance that is flavored, colored, packaged, or otherwise altered in a way that is designed to make that controlled substance more appealing" to children. The Senate is not expected to take any imminent action on the bill. For more information, please contact Keith Stroup, NORML Legal Counsel, at (202) 483-5500. (German) "They that start by burning books will end by burning men." --Heinrich Heine (1797-1856), from his play Almansor (1821) Starting in the 1860s, the Ganja Wallah Hasheesh Candy Company made maple sugar hashish candy, which soon became one of the most popular treats in America. For 40 years, it was sold over the counter and advertised in newspapers, as well as being listed in the catalogs of Sears-Roebuck, as a totally harmless, delicious, and fun candy. Di Fi Watch "unofficial" source for information about U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein Perhaps one of the strongest positions of DiFi is her unconditional support of the War on Drugs. The latest is the Methamphetamine Anti-Proliferation Act. If the measure becomes law, it will create a new federal felony -- punishable by a fine and three years in prison -- that covers Web pages that link to sites with information about where to buy "drug paraphernalia" such as roach clips, bowls, and bongs. Today's college students, many of whom grew up in the 80's and 90's and were the very children this war was supposed to protect, have seen firsthand the failure of punitive approaches to discourage youth drug use." But it's not surprising that drug control has evolved into knowledge control. After all, "a drug-free America," a goal repeatedly endorsed by Congress, is a totalitarian fantasy. Those who seek to achieve it are naturally driven to totalitarian means. Censorship is not the only threat. Another MAPA provision authorizes "sneak and peek" searches of people's homes. Federal agents could execute a search without notice and make copies of papers or computer files without furnishing a list of what they took. Making War On Free Speech! It's cunts like Feinstein that keep me on guard and wary of the left vs. right ideology.
