Ganja v Ritalin for ADHD

Case Study: Inhaled Cannabis Improves Symptoms Of ADHD
July 17, 2008 - Heidelberg, Germany

Oral administration of synthetic THC capsules (dronabinol) mitigates symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a case study published by the International Association for Cannabis as Medicine (IACM, Germany).

Investigators at the Heidelberg University Medical Center reported that smoking cannabis dramatically improved the performance, behavior, and mental state of a 28-year-old male patient diagnosed with severe ADHD. "The present case report suggests that individuals suffering from ADHD, may - in some cases - benefit from cannabis treatment in that it appears to regulate activation to a level which may be considered optimum for performance," researchers concluded.

Full text of the case study previously appeared in the German journal Archives of Criminology.

So it would appear the die is cast and that cannabis is set to be reclassified to a class B drug, bringing with it more arrests, more prison sentences, and more expense. In the meantime, Dutch Police in Amsterdam are complaining about their rights to use cannabis when off-duty and as if that wasn't enough to prove the futility of trying to outlaw a substance which is a long way safer than either alcohol or tobacco, we now have a consultant pediatrician from the US, claiming marijuana (or cannabis) can be used ON CHILDREN, in the treatment of ADD or ADHD? So who's telling us lies?

Ritalin Abuse On the Rise in Young People
CBS: Dec. 28, 2000
Ritalin has become the drug of choice to treat many of the six million American children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. One of the consequences of Ritalin's popularity has been a spike in its abuse. National Correspondent Jon Frankel reports.

W.A.M.M. has been documenting the use of medical marijuana for young people with multiple behavior disorders. A report on this subject will come out shortly. For now, please read the articles below regarding one of WAMM's patients.

"Relatively few adverse clinical effects from the chronic use of marijuana have been documented in humans. However, the criminalization of marijuana use may itself be a health hazard, since it may expose the users to violence and criminal activity."

i can tell you from personal experience that weed absofuckinglutely pwns all other drugs when it comes to managing ADHD. sure it's possible to smoke too much and then it just exacerbates the problem, but for me, weed was a catalyst for me waking up and realizing that i didn't need to be so fucking excited about everything all the time and to shut up once in awhile and listen.

with ritalin, zoloft, adderall, tenex, dexedrine, clonidine, etc. (all drugs i was prescribed between the ages of 8 and 17), growth is stunted, appetite is curbed, and social awkwardness/lack of confidence becomes a problem. when i was 17 (junior in hs), i finally told my parents "no more" and less than three months after i went cold turkey on these drugs i had gained 30 pounds, grown 2 inches, and even had my first kiss (yeah i know i started a bit late). my senior year of high school was easily the best year for me socially and athletically. i went from being the scrawny kid who never got any playing time to an all district honorable mention.

my freshman year of college i was kind of a loser. i stayed in all the time and didn't have many friends and was always extremely awkward at parties, around girls, etc. i dated this girl who was atrocious and not right for me at all for about 10 months. the relationship ended about a month after i had taken my first toke when i came back to school (full blown stoner by now) i made TONS of friends, went out all the time, and pretty much just had the time of my life. i went overboard that year and didn't go to class much, but i came around eventually and learned how to use the drug responsibly/without letting it run my life. from that year on college was fun as fuck. i started dating more and more and even helped found the club soccer team at my school. again, there were other things that helped me change too, but i truly believe smoking weed was a integral part of it.

i could go on with my sort of life story as it were, but i'll stop here for now. since i went off the drugs i've always felt very strongly about them. i'm not saying they didn't help me at all or that they're not right for some people, but by the time high school rolled around they had become a crutch for me and they were a crutch that i didn't need. i went against doctors' and parents' advice and i don't think i've ever made a better decision.

i guess the reason i feel the need to make such a lengthy post that i doubt many will read is that i may not know the first thing about parenting, but for anyone out there who is considering adhd/add medication for their children, do not take it lightly. psychiatrists (i've went to many in my youth) will recommend this and that drug until they've talked your ear off because they want you to keep coming back and giving them more money to write you a new script (i'm not saying that they're evil or anything, but there's sort of a conflict of interest there), but it's important to remember that the drugs aren't natural and that in the end, no one really needs them.

all of what i say comes from personal experience, so it might be different for some people, but for me making the switch from these synthetic pills to the naturally growing herb was the best thing i ever did for myself. hands down.
