US Election 2008: A Good Day for Marijuana Laws
US Election 2008: A Good Day for Marijuana Laws
![]() Election Day was a success for marijuana initiatives across the country, thanks to the work of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), and numerous state and local groups. full story Voters Say Yes to Medical Marijuana in Michigan & Massachusetts ![]() Marijuana Policy Project's initiative to legalize medical marijuana passed in Michigan and the marijuana decriminalization initiative passed in Massachusetts. full story Click here to review the ballot initiatives! On November 4, 2008, MPP and our allies across the country passed nine out of 10 marijuana-related ballot initiatives ... and also defeated a bad initiative. ...and someday we'll be back to 1969, the drug war is a symptom, not the disease. Marijuana: the law vs. 12 million people excerpted Life magazine Oct 31, 1969. 25-35 A growing body of opinion recognized the disproportionate severity of laws that define mere possession of marijuana as a felony and lead to travesties like the case of a 20-year-old college student sentenced to 20 years for possession (p. 30). Last week the Nixon administration reversed its adamant earlier position and recommended reducing the federal penalty for first offenders to a misdemeanor. In New York a group of middle-aged professional people begin an evening with a marijuana "cocktail party." in Detroit some lawyers and executives get together in the small hours for wine-and-pot. In Beverly Hills, at a stately black-tie dinner, the matronly hostess beckons the butler who brings a silver tray with a single after-dinner joint to be passed around. ![]() "You have to face the fact that the whole problem is really the blacks. The key is to devise a system that recognizes this all while not appearing to." -- Richard M. Nixon - Former President Chief of Staff, H. R. Halderman's diaries Thank you Miss Rosa Leary v. United States Marihuana Tax Act violated his privilege against self-incrimination Leary won that battle, but lost the war. His success prompted the President (Nixon) to sign an executive order to reinstate marijuana (and other) laws under a different mechanism. ![]() "I want a Goddamn strong statement on marijuana, I mean one that just tears the ass out of them. You know, it's a funny thing, every one of the bastards that are out for legalizing marijuana is Jewish." -- Richard M. Nixon - Former President The following is snipped from the DEA.GOV web page. To wit; *Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act (1970) In response to America's growing drug problem, Congress passed the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970. It replaced more than 50 pieces of drug legislation, went into effect on May 1, 1971, and was enforced by the BNDD, the DEA's predecessor agency. This law, along with its implementing regulations, established a single system of control for both narcotic and psychotropic drugs for the first time in U.S. history. It also established five schedules that classify controlled substances according to how dangerous they are, their potential for abuse and addiction, and whether they possess legitimate medical value. Twenty-eight years later, the CSA, though amended on several occasions, remained the legal framework from which the DEA derived its authority.* JohnO February 19, 2008 Richard Nixon On Pot Nixon Commission Report Nixon lied to schedule Ganja #1 "Even if one takes every reefer madness allegation of the prohibitionists at face value, marijuana prohibition has done far more harm to far more people than marijuana ever could." -- William F.
