The Million Marijuana March has been going since 73 when Yippies Dana Beal and Cures-Not-Wars started it in NYCity. Since then it has spread world wide in over 230 cities from a hundred people to several thousand. I call it the Global Ganja Gathering or just 3M, this year it will be May 2, 2009. Usually in SF its a day of hemp booths and speakers, music, food and a March @ 4:20. Not much mainstream press and usually not a lot of harassment unless its an election year or you act like its legal and taunt the cops. Thats S.F. - Okies might call the National Guard...

1971 May Day Protests
On Monday, May 3rd, 1971 one of the most disruptive actions of the Vietnam War era occurred in Washington, DC, when thousands of anti-war activists tried to shut down the Federal government in protest of the Vietnam War. The threat caused by the May Day Protests, forced the Nixon Administration to create a virtual state of siege in the Nation’s Capital.

This March is a grass roots organization based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Our aim is to gather One Million protesters in Washington D.C. July 4th 2009, for the worlds largest sit-in and protest of Marijuana being illegal. This will be a great act of civil-disobedience. We understand that many, because of family and jobs will not be able to sit-in till the end, but we hope that those that can will, until someone from the Government will address our issues. We ask that you spread the word and those that believe in personal freedom, and the rights for us to choose for our selves will not be denied. We ask that you be there to protest in Peace and non-violence.

On May 2, marchers in 263 cities will take to the streets to celebrate cannabis and demand an end to marijuana prohibition for the Global Marijuana March of 2009.

The annual event, also known as the Million Marijuana March and other various names around the world, is a commemoration of cannabis culture, where pot lovers gather as a peaceful show of force for the marijuana movement - to discuss ideas, educate the public, and call for an end to the Global Drug War.

Thousands Turn Out for All-Star Tribute

Legendary folk singer, banjo player, storyteller, and political and environmental activist Pete Seeger turned ninety on Sunday. More than 18,000 people packed New York’s Madison Square Garden Sunday celebrate the man, the music and the movement. The all-star lineup included Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Ani DiFranco, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Billy Bragg, Ruby Dee, Steve Earle, Arlo Guthrie, Guy Davis, Dar Williams, Michael Franti, Bela Fleck, Tim Robbins, Dave Matthews, Rufus Wainwright, John Mellencamp, Ben Harper, and Ritchie Havens. We speak with some of the musicians, play Seeger’s music and play excerpts from our hour-long interview with Seeger in 2004.

Pete Seeger has been an icon of American dissent and creative energy for almost seventy years. He performed with Woody Guthrie and the Weavers in the ’40s. In the ’50s, he opposed Senator Joseph McCarthy’s witch hunt and was almost jailed for refusing to answer questions before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He helped popularize the civil rights anthem “We Shall Overcome” and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. He was also a vocal critic of the Vietnam War and inspired a generation of protest singers. Later he became an important voice within the environmental and anti-nuclear movements.

The Snohomish City Council may decide Tuesday night to trim the budget by laying off a member of the police force - Dixie the drug-sniffing dog.
Dixie finds drugs and money for the reward of playing with a chew toy, but the 7-year-old shepherd-collie mix costs about $16,000 a year in vet care, food, grooming, kennel, and training costs.

The Everett Herald reports Snohomish plans to keep its other police dog, Kizar. The German shepherd is needed to track criminals and is a younger dog.
