the scenario is complex & full of vested interests, but if you magically unraveled them all, I think that Verk's final point is right on.. in that if you dent the actual potential sales market for the cartels (rather than just limiting profit margin by intercepting some fractional % of the product) you decrease the volatility of the illegal trade by making it so much less lucrative for new parties to join in the first place.

great things would happen for everyone if weed became less profitable.. you'd increasingly only have the more well-intentioned individuals remaining in the business. the market would become more competitive, quality would increase, prices would continually be driven in the favor of consumers. As Can'tSeeMe points out, the market ceiling is so artificially elevated at the moment that most successful commercial growers could see a huge drop in their margins and still make a very comfortable living,,

as the TK is so fond of pointing out, "It's all about PASSION, baby!"

it really is just madness though..

even if you aren't going after the med growers anymore.. currently our overall policy still seems to be to attempt to curb the blackmarket demand by locking up the consumers,,,

you gotta wonder who is doing the math on that one.

I dunno how else I can explain this, it's simple macroeconomics. Their time is worth less than ours is.
Hell, decent potatoes are pretty cheap, I still know a lot of people who prefer to grow their own.

I know people who brew their own beer, pretty decent stuff as well. Costs them about £0.30 a pint. Perfectly legal as long as they don't sell it.

It doesn't cost much to grow your own weed if you can do it outdoors. Compost and water are cheap. If it was legalised the only thing you'd have to worry about would be your plants getting ripped.
As for the expense of genetics- clones?

most people who smoke don't have the room, time or resources to grow...
