Air pollution takes a significant toll on human health in New Jersey every year, shortening thousands of lives and sending thousands of people to area hospitals.

Within New Jersey in 1999, nearly 60% of soot emissions and almost half of smog-forming emissions came from on-road and off-road mobile sources like cars, trucks,and construction equipment.
