When Alex White Plume planted a field full of industrial-grade hemp, he hoped that his crop might lift his family and community out of poverty. Then the DEA came to Pine Ridge. Alex White Plume called it his "field of dreams": an acre and a half of plants so tall and strong they seemed to touch the sky; a crop representing hope for a new and self-sufficient life for his family, residents of the desperately impoverished Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. But on Aug. 24, 2000 at sunrise, just four days before White Plume and his neighbors planned to harvest their bounty, White Plume awoke to the sounds of helicopters. He looked out the window and saw a convoy of vehicles heading for his field. He raced down to investigate, and was met by a slew of black-clad and heavily armed figures -- 36 agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the FBI, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the US Marshal's office. When White Plume rolled down the window of his pick-up to ask what was going on, he says, one US marshal pointed a gun in his face. Meanwhile, the other agents chopped down each plant near the roots and hauled them away. Alex White Plume's field after the raid. You see, White Plume was growing industrial hemp, a botanical cousin of marijuana, in that field. According to tests conducted later by the BIA, White Plume's hemp contained only trace amounts of the psychoactive element THC. But U.S. drug laws do not distinguish between marijuana (which has a higher THC content) and other kinds of hemp, and growing either is illegal. (Although, unlike its policies on marijuana possession federal law permits the possession or sale of mature stalks, fiber, and products made from hemp fiber and hemp seed oil; you just can't grow the stuff.) Still, the raid at Pine Ridge wasn't your typical drug bust. The Oglala Sioux tribal government, which passed a resolution allowing White Plume to plant his crop, argues that the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 gave Pine Ridge absolute sovereign status as an independent nation. The BIA, however, says Pine Ridge enjoys only "limited" sovereignty: While the tribe has its own government, constitution, and laws, it is subject to some federal oversight. Continued... http ://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread8646.shtml The sovereignty enjoyed by Indian nations in the United States is inherent to the Indian tribes. This means that the Creator granted sovereignty to the tribes, not the federal government or the Congress. The federal government has acknowledged the inherent nature of tribal sovereignty in the U. S. Constitution. Today, tribal sovereignty is exercised by Indian nations in efforts to fulfill basic governmental obligations, including providing for the general welfare of its members, developing economies within its jurisdiction, and creating the governmental institutions by which local control and input are the foundation for tribal community prosperity. Beginning in the early 1990's CNIGA adopted a policy and made a commitment to educating state elected officials, local governments and federal representatives about California Indians and tribal government gaming. Since the last Indian mentioned in a California textbook died in 1880, we realized that we would need to educate Californians at all levels not only that Indians still exist and have contemporary lives, but that we have sovereign government status. We were not surprised in the beginning of our educational outreach to learn that very few Californians knew Indians and reservations exist in the state, or that we still struggle to overcome poverty and the bitter circumstances of the past. Even more shocking to people not familiar with Indians was that we wanted to achieve the self-governance, promised us in the U.S. Constitution, court decisions and federal policy. The critical issue was and will continue to be the recognition of tribal government status, jurisdiction and political rights as equal to the state's authority. Understanding that the state cannot and does not have the automatic right to dictate to tribal governments, as it does all other governments in this state, is the lesson that all Californians are grappling with. The extent that other governments come to respect our sovereignty will depend on many factors, but one will certainly be public recognition of tribal sovereignty and its historical basis. The goal of the CNIGA Public Relations Committee is constant communication. Communication is also hearing and responding with understanding to concerned and interested parties from neighbors to local and state government officials, as well as getting our story and point of view across. We have learned through our public relations efforts, that when we articulate whom we are and what we are trying to achieve, people listen and support us. Indians and non-Indians can get beyond old stereotypes, old history and prejudice. Ignorance is only our enemy and oppressor if we allow it to exist. So we are vigilant in weeding out ignorance wherever it may be growing. We exist to prevent and expose misinformation, misrepresentation and ignorance about Indian people, tribal government and sovereignty. By Anthony R. Pico, Chairman CNIGA Public Relations Committee http ://www.cniga.com/media/index.php The California Nations would like to extend a special thank you to the following companies and organizations. Racism is racism, tyranny and oppression is tyranny and oppression. Why trade one for another and stay a slave to the fascism? DdC Livi ng the outlaw life : To hell with freedom! By Claire Wolfe If people are willing to trade freedom for goodie-filled baskets of tyranny, they positively crave tyranny when they hope it’ll hurt someone else. Sure, let’s have “sentence enhancements” for rag-head terrorists, dopers, and inner-city gang-bangers. Never mind that those “enhancements” might one day hit their own kids. That’s all just theoretical. Paranoid nonsense. Only alarmists talk like that. (Whoda thunk that when the original “drug czar,” Harry Anslinger, was telling tales to Congress back in the 1930s about the “100,000 … Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos, and entertainers” in the U.S. whose marijuana smoking “causes white women to seek sexual relations” with them that someday Anslinger’s laws would be used to lock up the grandkids of all those middle-class white folks who drooled gleefully over Anslinger’s salacious horror stories”?) Wolf e's Lodge EXCERPTS FROM 101 Things to Do 'Til the RevolutionAmer ika, Amerika by Claire Wolfe Let me run by you a brief list of items that are "the law" in America today. As you read, consider what all these have in common... ...All of the above items are the law of the land. Federal law. What else do they have in common? Well, when I ask this question to audiences, I usually get the answer, "They're all unconstitutional." True. My favorite answer came from an eloquent college student who blurted, "They all SUUUCK!" Also true. But the saddest and most telling answer is: They were all the product of the 104th Congress. Every one of the horrors above was imposed upon you by the Congress of the Republican- Revolution -- the Congress that pledged to "get government off your back." Wolf e's Lodge Essays by Claire Wolfe Copyrighted by Claire Wolfe. Interesting stuff.
But white people don't suck. Or at least no more than black people, asian people, indian people etc etc. People suck. And more importantly government officials who enforce an unjust and short sighted law suck.

The Indian land is just that, Indian land. It does not belong to the Amerikkan Government or any other. The Amerikkan Government made treaties with the Indian tribes that stated sovereignity.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs should be dismantled. As should the DEAth. They had no jurisdiction on Indian land. The Indians are quite obviously smarter than all the other races that live in Amerikka. They wanted to do something positive with the hemp plant. They want to go back to the lifestyle they had before their lives were ruined by "progress." By the way, it wasn't tobacco the Indians were smoking in those Peace pipes. Tobacco was the Indians' way of getting even with the white man. Indians still don't smoke tobacco. Once again, I am sorry I have to pay taxes for this type of facism.

well the u.s. government has broken every treaty ever made with any tribe since the beginning. and theyre still breaking all of them.
it isnt the white man so much as it is the white man's way that is the problem, and i believe hemp and marijuana are a small part of that bigger problem. |

posted June 19, 2003 10:11 PM well the u.s. government has broken every treaty ever made with any tribe since the beginning. and theyre still breaking all of them. it isnt the white man so much as it is the white man's way that is the problem, and i believe hemp and marijuana are a small part of that bigger problem. Yes thats true, but if your already white you don't even get a treaty in the first place. They just pretty much iminent domain your ass or conveniently find some stash to forfeit for the Sheriffs retirement. Fascism once again has no prejudice against the color of your skin. The numbers are all that matter. Indians are poverty taking taxes that could be going to the untra wealthy. Preventing illness cost them money the same as not having traffic jams. The "smart" Indians are into Casino's with the parephernalia that goes with it. The Bennet binges on the slots, in luxury rooms with lots of booze and bennies to stay awake, and the travel expenses written off as part of the Drugwar. The present Drugczar with Bennet and the new Religion Treatment Diulio wrote the modern reefer madness book Bodycount, in the 90's as Bushit I Czar and side kick czar for Rayguns and Diulio screaming about preditor pothead kids and Turner claiming AIDs and Gays were from smoking j's. Anslinger rehashed by Naha's pushed on kids in DARE Brainwashings. The same damn Fascist as their grandpaps, what the fucks so difficult about that? Its all red herrings keeping the facts that Ganja has been safe and Sacramental for a long long while. The fiber doesn't take crude oil or chemicals. The seeds are complete balanced nutrition, in competition to the chemical grain that takes most of the Agriculture. Sucking up fresh water, running off toxins into the water supply. For the exported flesh taking 12 pounds of the grain for each pound of meat sent to Japan, China or India. Leaving filled fascist pockets and nitrates from the dung. Aborting more Christian babies than Roe Vs Wade. Just call it misscarriage and Pat&Jer say its ok. The victims fight each other clawing their way up the ladder into the clouds. Stepping over the homeless, seen as deterrents to keep workers quiet about the environment or safety in the workplace. Or asking for a raise. Tricks of the trade. Farmworkers swallowing sprays for the strawberries or cotton, hemp is softer and stronger without using much artifical. Its also a deterrent to the weeds and bugs. Less profits for Monsanto and their agent orange. Sprayed on the pheasant homes in the midwest and nationwide comprising 99% of the "marijuana" eradications. No body mentions. Same as comparing Ganja to cigarettes. Not saying a thing about the flame retardents. Or inhauncers and flavors and preservers and what is used to grow it. Absorbed into the seed. Not used on Ganja. Not much of these health hazards for Indians 30,000 years, or Egyptians or Turkish and that also is never mentioned, the thousands of adulterations put into that advertized product. Except nicotine. While ole Jessie Helms sells out the farmers keeping mum about the extras. To create another prohibition so the poor get the floor scrapings with even more chemicals than the diet ones. Ganja the expectorant and bronchial opener can help with the pollution and tobacco use. Food, fuel from the stalks or lubricant from the oil, or bio diesel as it was invented for. The stripmining ore for auto bodies was replaced by Henry Ford with hemp and soy 10 times more dent resistent, then shelved for the Rockefeller Oil we fight wars for. Now in the food, fuel and fiber we use. Hydrocarbons sucked out of remote sanctuaries and sand wars and paramilitary DEAth squads. Junkies passing disease banning needle exchanges so we can pay for their treatment so Rumsfeld, Bush Cheney Cliarence Drug companies can profit, but not help them maintain for pennies legally. And instead of letting cops breed snitches, let docs and clinics deal with this illness. Ditto U Gush will raise more money on white castle burgers than he gives to the Veterins still sick from dadya's sandwar. Yes Ganja is the main coarse feeding this Fascist beast, yet its lies are believed and we are addicted, in total denial, cause our schools didn't teach us, and we need that diploma. So the Ganjawar censors books in the schools and History is written as a means to an end. To believe the reefer mad theories keeps the war going, and that is the objective. $7 - 10 billion a year made just on Ganja arrests. Not counting the unacountable Drugczar budget of 20 billion or the untaxed underground cash crop of a trillion. The Ganjawar makes bucks in perpetuation and in keeping farmers natural grown competition off the shelves and racks. Or supplimenting fast food burgers and actually providing nutrition. That also wasn't taught. The canvas or burlap with todays technology. Is blending finer linens and textiles grown in the 30 some countries except here and Mexico. That would give the poor a staple to build homes, furnish them with hemp wood, stronger than trees. Hemp oil plastic plumbing or hurd wall concrete the same as the bridges in Southern France built in the 1400's, still standing today. While we're in this 1950 vacuum tube waiting too inhale. Discover the reason Ganja is illegal and you will find the only thing illegal is the Ganjawar. Spread the word, the people ain't evil or stupid, just not informed of the alternatives. Peace, Love and Liberty or the Silence of D.E.A.th DdC "Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it, misdiagnosing it, and then misapplying the wrong remedies." -- Groucho Marx Invisible Prohibition "Certain American industrialists had a great deal to do with bringing fascist regimes into being in both Germany and Italy.
