Forbes Magazine:The Marijuana Business

The Marijuana Business
Forbes.com staff, 10.28.03, 7:00 AM ET
NEW YORK - Recently the U.S. Supreme Court, in refusing to disturb an appeals court ruling, gave its approval to doctors who want to discuss with patients the use of marijuana for certain diseases. That was good news for a multibillion industry that has sprung up in British Columbia, Canada--dope growers.

Thousands of small, high-tech, indoor marijuana farms supply the legal--and illegal--market in the U.S. These "grows," as they are known, have made marijuana Canada's most valuable agricultural product, bigger than wheat, cattle or timber.

This special report looks into the unstoppable economics of a booming business that is not only making millionaires out of growers and smugglers but also pouring money into hundreds of legitimate businesses that supply them, everything from supplies to electricity.
