Bush is sabotaging the laws that have protected America's environment
for more than thirty years

George W. Bush will go down in history as America's worst environmental president. In a ferocious three-year attack, the Bush administration has initiated more than 200 major rollbacks of America's environmental laws, weakening the protection of our country's air, water, public lands and wildlife. Cloaked in meticulously crafted language designed to deceive the public, the administration intends to eliminate the nation's most important environmental laws by the end of the year. Under the guidance of Republican pollster Frank Luntz, the Bush White House has actively hidden its anti-environmental program behind deceptive rhetoric, telegenic spokespeople, secrecy and the intimidation of scientists and bureaucrats. The Bush attack was not entirely unexpected. George W. Bush had the grimmest environmental record of any governor during his tenure in Texas. Texas became number one in air and water pollution and in the release of toxic chemicals. In his six years in Austin, he championed a short-term pollution-based prosperity, which enriched his political contributors and corporate cronies by lowering the quality of life for everyone else. Now President Bush is set to do the same to America. After three years, his policies are already bearing fruit, diminishing standards of living for millions of Americans.

A new cafe has opened in Montreal that has patrons buzzing and the local police grumbling. Chez Marijane opened Saturday and will allow patrons to smoke marijuana on the premises. The cafe's name is a nod to a common nickname for marijuana. But the owners insist they won't be selling the drug, peddling only coffee and pastries. The space will double as the political offices of the Bloc Pot, the provincial counterpart of the Marijuana Party of Canada. Hugo St-Onge, the leader of the Quebec party, says the cafe will be used to push for the legalization of marijuana and to contribute to the debate surrounding the legalization of pot.

Solicitor Ralph Hoisington said Friday that he will decide next week whether Goose Creek police broke any laws Nov. 5 when officers raided Stratford High School with guns drawn during a search for drugs. The solicitor said he will make that decision after reviewing a 200-page report prepared by the State Law Enforcement Division that he received this week. "If there was no legal justification for the police action, then what was done could be considered an assault and battery," Hoisington said.

In a speech before the American Bar Association in August, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy decried current federal sentencing practices as too harsh. "Our resources are misspent, our punishments too severe, our sentences too long," he said. "The federal sentencing guidelines should be revised downward." But Kennedy, a Reagan appointee, was spitting in the wind. The Bush administration and the Republican-controlled Congress have been moving things in precisely the opposite direction, stiffening penalties for federal offenses and making it more difficult for judges to offer any leniency.

Yeah they are passing laws with names that are exactly the opposite of what the law does. For example theyll pass something called the Forest Fire Prevention Program and in reality they cut down all the trees. No forest fire here.

This example is obviously pretty extreme but it shows the mentality behind it.
