Dark Alliance: The D.E.A.th of Gary Webb

Investigative Journalist,
"Dark Alliance" Author Gary Webb Dead at Age 49
http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/367/garywebb.shtml

Phillip S. Smith, Writer/Editor, psmith@drcnet.org, 12/17/04

Gary Webb, the prize-winning former San Jose Mercury News investigative reporter whose series on the "dark alliance" between the CIA and Nicaraguan Contras to import cocaine into the US in the early 1980s ignited a firestorm of controversy, died December 10 an apparent suicide. He was found in his suburban Sacramento home suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. A note accompanied his body, but its contents have not been disclosed.

While Webb was most notorious for the "Dark Alliance" series, which he turned into a 548-page book of the same name, he was a reporter whose interest in drug policy both preceded and extended Gary Webb beyond the murky world of Reagan-era drugs and guns in Central America. In 1993, while at the in Mérida Mercury News, Webb penned an investigative series on asset forfeiture abuse, "The Forfeiture Racket," which is credited with helping to undo California's forfeiture law. The series, which appeared as the state legislature was confronting the issue, documented widespread abuses and helped turn public opinion against asset forfeiture. The result was a new forfeiture law that required a criminal conviction before property could be forfeited.

But it was "Dark Alliance" that both made Webb's name and ruined his career. While links between Nicaraguan counterrevolutionari es who helped finance their war through the cocaine traffic and the CIA had been made previously, Webb's investigative series and subsequent book took it to a new level, arguing that the conspiracy between the CIA and the Contras was directly tied to the crack cocaine explosion of the early 1980s in Los Angeles. The series exploded on the national media-scape like a roadside bomb and led to surreal scenes like that in Los Angeles in the fall of 1996 when the head of the CIA was loudly booed and jeered at a crowded public meeting where attendees held his agency responsible for the crack epidemic.

But "Dark Alliance" quickly came under attack from the largest newspapers in the country -- all of which had failed miserably in reporting the connections between the CIA, the Contras, and the cocaine traffic. The Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times all attacked Webb's conclusions, and his own paper eventually turned on him. Within a few months of publishing "Dark Alliance," the Mercury News stepped back from its conclusions and took Webb off the story. He resigned rather than accept a humiliating transfer to a state politics beat.

While there were errors in some of the particulars in the series and subsequent book, its broad conclusions have withstood the test of time. That the Reagan administration at best turned a blind eye to drug running by
its Central American proxy armies is now well-documented and uncontroversial. That some of the cocaine trafficked by the Contras ended up in the hands of pioneering LA crack entrepreneur "Freeway Ricky" Ross is
also undeniable.

But Webb suffered as much from the enthusiasm of his supporters as the slings and arrows of his foes. Some readers were all too eager to loudly cry "genocide" and to turn his carefully documented findings into the stuff of conspiracy theories, making it all the easier to discredit Webb for the ravings of his most extreme followers.

Despite having won more than 30 journalism awards in his career, Webb was effectively marginalized as a mainstream journalist after "Dark Alliance." He found work in the California state assembly until he was laid off after the November elections and had taken a new position with a California political publication, the Sacramento News and Review. But even while at the legislature, Webb returned to reporting on aspects of the drug war. In 1999, he penned a report accusing the California Highway Patrol of unofficially condoning racial profiling, but that report, too, was attacked by its targets.

In 2002, Webb attended the DRCNet-sponsored Out from the Shadows drug legalization conference in Mérida, Mexico, where he signaled his continuing interest in reporting on drug issues by participating in the Narco News School of Authentic Journalism and agreeing to for a time take the helm of the organization itself. But that agreement proved to be abortive, and Webb soon returned to California and the state legislature.

"All he ever wanted to do was write," Webb's ex-wife, Susan Bell, told the Mercury News this week. "He never really recovered from it," she said, referring to the "Dark Alliance" controversy.

"The guy had a fierce commitment to justice and truth. He cared deeply about the people who are forgotten, that we try to shove into the dark recesses of our minds and world," said Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for the
California attorney general's office who worked with Webb.

On a personal note, I met Gary Webb when he spoke at the Washington, DC, bookstore where I worked as part of his "Dark Alliance" book tour. Even with his mainstream journalism career in tatters, Webb radiated conviction and confidence, along with a keen intellect and a quiet, friendly persona. We had a chance to speak briefly. I encouraged him to continue to seek the truth and expose it to the world. He said he would. And now he is dead by his own hand.

The world can be a tough and lonely place for those who dare to challenge the powers that be. Gary Webb found out the hard way, but he kept on struggling until he could take it no more. -- END --

Hung Out to Dry: How Webb's Series Died
studioron@verizon.ne t 16 Dec 2004
In 1997, editors at the San Jose Mercury News pulled the rug out from under reporter Gary Webb and his investigation of the Reagan-Bush contra-cocaine scandal, a decision that contributed eight years later to Webb's suicide. To give readers a fuller understanding of that journalistic betrayal, we are republishing an account written in 1997 by Georg Hodel, a reporter who was collaborating with Webb on his historic series.

Consortiumnews.com is currently conducting its end-of-year fund-raising drive, seeking to raise $20,000 so it can continue publishing into the New Year. Dark Alliance: by Gary Webb
The Cia, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion
Seven Stories Press, 1998

GARY WEBB - "Dark Alliance" - TRT 60 min.
BTV032

Journalist Gary Webb broke the story of the CIA-crack connection in a series of articles for the San Jose Mercury News. The articles were quickly attacked by the rest of the corporate media, the Mercury News chickened out and Gary Webb was fired. Luckily, the entire story is collected in this book. A precise and informative talk. Dark Alliance charts the work that began in a stunning series of 1996 articles for The San Jose Mercury News. Gary Webb won the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for his series on the Loma Prieta earthquake, and applied the same tenacity to his investigation of the crack cocaine epidemic, charting its progress through an international drug ring with ties to the CIA and the Nicaraguan Contras. A story that should be fiction but is not, Dark Alliance draws from previously unreleased information so explosive that The San Jose Mercury News refused to publish it.

Assassination?

Assassination of US Investigative Journalist Gary Webb?
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/XYM412A.html

Investigative journalist Gary Webb speaks to a packed house on the CIA's connection to drug trafficking, and the failure of the media to expose the truth. by Charles Overbeck
Matrix Editor easterisle@aol.com

When the Nicaraguan contras began to covertly fund their war against the Sandanistas by selling drugs and guns to California street gangs, the Central Intelligence Agency turned a blind eye. While black neighborhoods were being ravaged by the crack cocaine plague, CIA operatives actively participated in this devastating drug explosion, protected from prosecution by a secret agreement between the Department of Justice and the CIA. The bastards knew it was happening, and they did nothing to stop it. Once again, human rights and human life took a back seat to "national security" considerations. Nevertheless, thanks to investigative journalists like Bob Parry and Gary Webb, the story got out.

Political Assassination in the US: by Kurt Nimmo
Did the CIA kill Gary Webb?
http://globalresearch.ca/articles/NIM412B.html

Write about the CIA and drugs, end up dead. You may recall Webb’s 1996
series in the San Jose Mercury about how the CIA sold coke in Los Angeles and used the money to fund the Nicaraguan Contras in the 1980s. He received a Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for his coverage of the Loma Prieta earthquake. Even so, he had a difficult time keeping a job, mostly because editors and publishers are a timid lot these days.

“Webb was found Friday morning at his home in Sacramento County, dead of an apparent suicide. Moving-company workers called authorities after discovering a note posted on his front door that read, ‘Please do not enter. Call 911 and ask for an ambulance,’” reports the Associated Press . “Webb died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Sacramento County coroner’s office.”

A post on the Indybay forum notes: Four Bush biographers, Mark Lombardi, J.H. Hatfield, Danny Casalaro, and now Gary Webb—all “suicide” victims. What are the odds all of these people actually committing suicide?

Examining the male U.S. suicide rate for recent years, we can extrapolate a conservative estimate of 17 male suicides per 100,000 people, or 0.017%. The odds of 4 specific, male biographers committing suicide would be the 4th power of 17/100000, or 8.3521 4.913 x 10^-17… roughly 1 chance 10,000,000,000,000,0 00. About as good a definition of impossible as you can get. A person would stand a better chance of playing the Canadian lottery 6/49 exactly twice in one’s lifetime and winning ther grand jackpot BOTH TIMES! (That is, picking 6 numbers out of 49 possible numbers and matching all 6 numbers out of 6 random draws, on 2 separate occasions, and having only purchased two Canadian lottery tickets ever.) This calculation should be regarded as a conservative estimate: the actual odds against such a “coincidence” would be much greater. For example, if any of the biographers were female, the odds would be even greater.

Now that Bush has his “mandate,” we will probably see other critics fall victim to accidents and suicides. Crime families usually deal harshly with their enemies—and so does the CIA.

FDA-Approved Medical Marijuana Research Blocked
http://makeashorterlink.com/?T1A726E75

DEA Ruling Renders Approval of MMJ Impossible
The US Drug Enforcement Administration has declined to grant a Massachusetts University researcher permission to grow medical marijuana for federally approved research. Advocates for the legalization of the drug say the ruling has effectively "slammed the door" on efforts to win the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of marijuana as a medicine.
http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread20037.shtml

Up In Smoke: A Setback for Medical Marijuana
Two weeks ago, while hearing arguments in the landmark Supreme Court case Ashcroft vs. Raich — which by this spring will decide whether federal agents can arrest medical-marijuana users even in states where such use is legal — Justice Stephen Breyer questioned the logic of having a patchwork of disparate state laws. Instead, he suggested, medical-marijuana proponents would be better off petitioning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reclassify pot as a prescribable drug. "That seems to be the obvious way to get this done," he said. "Medicine by regulation is better than medicine by referendum." Read More...
http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread20035.shtml

"We’re disappointed, but we’re not surprised," "This simply illustrates, very clearly, how deep the official prejudice is against considering that marijuana might be a medicine. In the DEA’s letter, they essentially pass judgment on research that hasn’t occurred yet, saying that the deleterious effect would be too great. Isn’t that for the FDA to judge? But I think in some ways it’s probably helpful to the cause to have that naked prejudice out there in black and white. It’s clear that there’s this whole anti-drug bureaucracy that just has no interest in science."
Bruce Mirken, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project.

DEA Rejects Professor's Bid To Grow Marijuana
Lyle Craker, a horticulturist who specializes in medicinal plants, had won support from both Senators Edward M. Kennedy and John F. Kerry in his quest to grow marijuana legally. Only one American lab, at the University of Mississippi, currently has the legal right to grow marijuana for research, and Craker argued that the Mississippi marijuana is not strong enough and not readily available to researchers.

He first applied to the DEA for permission to grow marijuana more than three years ago. Kennedy and Kerry wrote a letter to the DEA last year saying that the Mississippi lab had an ''unjustified monopoly."

Craker and a group that wants to fund his work, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, sued the government last summer. One of their arguments was that the DEA's failure to act on the application was an ''unreasonable delay."

The US Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., asked the government to explain its delay, and instead DEA issued a decision last week. In the decision, DEA said that the University of Mississippi provides researchers ''marijuana of sufficient quantity and quality to meet all their legitimate and authorized research needs in a timely manner." It also argues that an international treaty says the government can allow only one source for research marijuana.

CIA & Drugs

Senators Back UM Medical Marijuana
Both U.S. senators from Massachusetts, Edward M. Kennedy and John Kerry, have written a letter to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration urging approval of an application by the University of Massachusetts to grow high-quality marijuana for medicinal research.
http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread17685.shtml

How John Kerry Exposed The Contra-Cocaine Scandal
The Reagan administration did everything it could to thwart Kerry's investigation, including attempting to discredit witnesses, stonewalling the Senate when it requested evidence and assigning the CIA to monitor Kerry's probe. But it couldn't stop Kerry and his investigators from discovering the explosive truth: that the Contra war was permeated with drug traffickers who gave the Contras money, weapons and equipment in exchange for help in smuggling cocaine into the United States. Even more damningly, Kerry found that U.S. government agencies knew about the Contra-drug connection, but turned a blind eye to the evidence in order to avoid undermining a top Reagan-Bush foreign policy initiative.

But almost a decade later, in 1998, Kerry's trailblazing investigation was vindicated by the CIA's own inspector general, who found that scores of Contra operatives were implicated in the cocaine trade and that U.S. agencies had looked the other way rather than reveal information that could have embarrassed the Reagan-Bush administration.

Even after the CIA's admissions, the national press corps never fully corrected its earlier dismissive treatment. That would have meant the New York Times and other leading publications admitting they had bungled their coverage of one of the worst scandals of the Reagan-Bush era.

LSD, CIA, & Rumsfeld12 Aug 2002
Scientist's Death Haunts Family
The death in 1953 of a government scientist, Frank Olson, in a fall from a New York hotel window, is one of the most notorious cases in CIA history. Only in 1975 did Olson's family learn that the CIA had slipped LSD into his drink, days before his death. President Ford apologized for an experiment gone awry, and promised that the government would reveal everything about the case. But newly obtained documents show. . .two of the key officials involved in the decision to withhold that information were White House aides Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, today the nation's vice president and secretary of Defense. Cannabis Shrinks Tumors: Government Knew in 74
The Madrid study marks only the second time that THC has been administered to tumor-bearing animals. In 1974, researchers at the Medical College of Virginia, who had been funded by the National Institutes of Health to find evidence that marijuana damages the immune system, found instead that THC slowed the growth of three kinds of cancer in mice -- lung and breast cancer, and a virus-induced leukemia.

The DEA quickly shut down the Virginia study and all further cannabis/tumor research, according to Jack Herer, who reports on the events in his book, The Emperor Wears No Clothes. In 1976, President Gerald Ford put an end to all public cannabis research and granted exclusive research rights to major pharmaceutical companies, who set out -- unsuccessfully -- to develop synthetic forms of THC that would deliver all the medical benefits without the "high."

Not at all hard to do, hahaha,
take two guns, mount them somehow paralell infront of you, and then attach a string to each trigger, using a pully system so that one might manage to pull the strings while infront of the guns yet still pulling the trigger back.

That is if you want to go through all this involved work just to commit thee supreme act of cowardice.

Sorry, I couldent find any reference to a suicide involving two gunshots to the head in any of these posts, albeit just scanning them over, so of course there is no real relevance to my posting...
But honestly, is there ever?

Coroner Robert Lyons said his office had been swamped with calls. "It's unusual in a suicide case to have two shots," he said, "but it has been done in the past, and it is in fact a distinct possibility."

Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair have a book out called "Whiteout" about the relationships of the CIA, the media, and the drug trade. In the past few days Cockburn/St.Clair have had three good articles on Gary Webb and the one yesterday was from Chapter 2 of their book "Whiteout." Cockburn gave a great display of his knowledge of the CIA in what I though was a masterpiece of an article a couple of weeks ago titled "Politicize the CIA?-You've Got to be Kidding!"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12042004.html

Yesterday they had an extended excerpt from the Cockburn/St. Clair book that came in two parts and was titled "CounterAttack- How the Press and the CIA Killed Gary Webb's Career"
http://www.counterpunch.org/webb12172004.html

On December 13th Cockburn and St. Clair presented their article titled "Trashed by the CIA's Claque-Gary Webb: a Great Reporter"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12132004.html

This weekend's edition has a Cockburn piece tiitled "From Kobe Bryant to Uncle Sam Why They Hated Gary Webb"
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn12182004.html

On December 14th, Richard Thieme wrote a piece called "That's What Kept Me Going- My Last Talk with Gary Webb"
http://www.counterpunch.org/thieme12142004.html

On the CIA and the drug trade there is one amazing fact that challenges all sensibilities- the CIA introduced the opium poppy to Afganistan. It is in an article at CounterPunch and cites a summary of Michael Ruppert's words on the subject-
http://www.counterpunch.org/cockburn09012004.html

"Before 1980, Afghanistan produced 0% of the world's opium. But then the CIA moved in, and by 1986 they were producing 40% of the world's heroin supply. By 1999, they were churning out 3,200 TONS of heroin a year – nearly 80% of the total market supply.

Remembering Gary Webb, his bulldog reporting
http://www.cleveland.com/letters/pla...6630237321.xml

Mary Anne Sharkey

Like many of his newspaper friends, I was disappointed that the obituary on Gary Webb failed to capture his tenacious career in newspapers, particularly at The Plain Dealer. Webb was one of the toughest and best investigative reporters in a business that too often rolls over for those who are in power.

Webb went after doctors, governors, judges, politicians, cabinet directors and business owners. He was fearless in afflicting the comfortable. It would be hard to list all of the great stories Webb wrote, but a partial list would include:

Investigative pieces on the Port Authority and an insurance contract that led to the indictment of a board member; an examination of the Ohio State Medical Board and its failure to punish dangerous and criminal doctors that led to reforms still in place today; the coverup by Ohio State University of suspicious deaths linked to convicted serial killer Dr. Michael Swango; self-dealings by doctors who owned Medicaid HMOs that took huge profits while failing to provide basic patient care; abuse of power and accepting of suspicious campaign funds by Ohio Supreme Court members and staff; an exposé of a coverup of sexual harassment cases in a state agency that led to the resignation of a Cabinet director; investigations of inflated contracts for telephones and furniture awarded by state procurement officers; and a series on abuses in the state mental-health system (MRDD) that caused another director to resign. Only time will tell if he was not correct about a link between cocaine traffic and the CIA that caused him to eventually lose his final newspaper job. But it was a great privilege to have shared an office and a byline with Gary.

Sharkey and Webb worked in The Plain Dealer's Columbus Bureau in the 1980s.

"...When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
- Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence.

It is a moral value to provide health care. It is a moral value to educate our young people. The sense of community that comes from full participation in our democracy is a moral value. It is a moral value to make sure that we do not leave our own debts to be paid by the next generation. Honesty is a moral value.
- Gov. Howard Dean, M.D.

Morality is always the product of terror;
its chains and strait-waistcoats are fashioned by those
who dare not trust others, because they dare not trust themselves,
to walk in liberty.
-- Aldous Huxley

Hello darkness my old friend
I've come to talk to you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left it's seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains, within the sounds of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestones
'Neath a halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night, and touched the sounds of silence

And in the naked light I saw,
Ten thousand people maybe more
People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share,
No one dare, disturb the sounds of silence

`Fools', said I `you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my word that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you'
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the well of silence

And people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they'd made
And the sand flashed it's warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, `the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls
And whisper in the sounds of silence'

SOUNDS OF SILENCE Simon & Garfunkle

If a group would hide tumor research, they would lie about anything. If a group would set up catch 22 laws that can not be enforced or obeyed, they would not hesitate to remove certain obstacles. If the schoolbooks are censored by these same charlatans and History politicized for the sake of obedience. If the state is in business as the sole seller of poor quality "marijuana" while outlawing research and competition, this is Fascism. Drug Warriors Make Millions Off MarijuanaBy Froma Harrop

The money in illicit drugs doesn't all go to bad guys carrying AK-47s and driving BMWs. About $69 billion of it last year went to police, federal agents, judges, jailers and other drug-law enforcers across the United States. These are the good guys, but most are not so good that they will admit that the war on drugs is a waste of money and lives. The war is how they make a living. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer wasn't thinking about the billions when he played the innocent during the recent arguments on medical marijuana. Read More...

The Pitfalls are soooo damn Pityfull!

Another post claimed the coroner stated two gunshots to the head, and he has seen it before. Like all those dumb thieves found at the bottom of the river trying to steal 40 foot of logging chain and concrete anchors. Gary has joined a longer and longer line of patriots turned martyr by the cowardice spooks serving the fascists who hijacked the government. John, Martin and Bobby, Janis Jimmy and Morrison, Marley, Crochie, Holly and Skynerd. Then when Lennon returned before Rayguns and Bush, one album then he was gone. Todd, Peter and Renee and the Massacre at Rainbow Farms. Draconian sentences to hundreds not mentioned, based on reefer madess utterings fastracked into legislation.

When these walking D.E.A.th have nothing to say to defend their slow torture of the worlds citizens, And they censor school books and the broadcast newsprint and cable. And constant attempts at the internet. When free speech constraints ain't good enough and a book or an article slips out. Then the masses start seeing what might jeopardize profit, the spooks come in to settle the problem. The money they take in perpetuating various wars, especially the bogus war on Ganja. Has turned elections from Afrika to Chili to Iraq to Thailand to Afghanis new Unocal bossman. I don't think we can fix a broken system within a broken system. Only the people peacefully enmassing have the power to remove the v
festuring pustulants. Guns will only bring profits to more corporate drugs and bandages and coffins.

I have always loved marijuana. It has been a source of joy and comfort to me for many years. And I still think of it as a basic staple of life, along with beer and ice and grapefruits - and millions of Americans agree with me."

"This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it or their revolutionary right to dismember it or overthrow it."

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the Atmosphere.
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Abigail Adams, 1787

Tryhard spammer. What you said doesn’t make any sense. Than again, not every opinion has to make sense. “The pitfalls are pitiful.”? It’s more like you’re pitiful. Pitfalls are meant to be in our lives, can’t you handle them?

If you had a life of your own you wouldn't be so bitter pity, ya see we really do care...

Now run along and spread that pityfall sadness to the other toy soldiers.

So come along you Pityfall sheople, bootlicking tin soldiers of the Khristzion weird odor. Come dance the W Pityfall slaves and human wannabees. Stop the incessant whining about hobgobblins and shadows, crying whimpers like frustrated kiddies having a tantrum. Such pain you must feel seeing your plastic world fall apart before you got a chance to rip the people off yourself? Dance lil Pity dance!!!

Now Pityfall, instead of always posting your whiny spam here is some real information you won't find on your fake news channels. Don be afraid lucy, its only reality. Run along, I tire of your foolishness.

Ganja/Hemp Info

In the later times, some shall speak lies in hypocrisy commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving. For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. (Paul: 1 Timothy 4:1-6)

* Hemp extracts can be used to treat a variety of physical and mental ailments which include tuberculosis, glaucoma, depression, and the side effects of cancer therapy. Prior to this century, cannabis extracts were the most commonly used medicines throughout the world.

House Votes To Let Farmers Grow Industrial Hemp

* “The hemp seed is the highest of any plant in essential amino acids and essential fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are responsible for our immune response...and contribute to…more disease resistance.” (Hempseed Nutrition by Lynn Osburn).

* Hempseed was used to treat nutritional deficiencies brought on by tuberculosis, a severe nutrition blocking disease that causes the body to waste away. (Czechoslovakia Tubercular Nutritional Study, 1955.)

* Hemp seed protein more closely resembles that of the human body than soy; it is also easier to digest. Hemp contains a richer source of essential fatty acid oils than soy. These oils prevent heart disease and build the immune system. Hemp also resists UV-B light, which is a kind of sunlight that is blocked by the ozone layer. Soy beans do not take UV-B light very well. If the ozone layer were to deplete by 16%, which by some estimates is very possible, soy production would fall by 25-30%. We may have to grow hemp or starve -- and it won't be the first time that this has happened. Hemp has been used to "bail out" many populations in time of famine.

* Hemp grain is the most nutritionally complete seed on the planet for human consumption. Each hemp seed contains 25% protein. This protein is more easily digestible than the protein in soybeans because it contains a perfect ratio of essential fatty acids (EFA's). EFA's are important for strengthening your immune system and protecting you from disease. Fish oil and flax oil are also high in EFA's, but hemp contains the most perfect ratio of EFA's for human consumption. Hemp grain is also high in iron and calcium and is an excellent source of dietary fiber

* Ralph Loziers, general counsel of the National Institute of Oilseed Products, told the Congressional committee studying marijuana prohibition in 1937 that, “Hemp seed… is used in all the Oriental nations and also in a part of Russia as food. It is grown in their fields and used as oatmeal.

* Hemp seed oil has been called Nature's perfect blend of Essential Fatty Acids due to the large amount of these substances contained in the oil. Specifically Hemp seed oil has large amounts of Lineolenic (Omega-3), and Lineoleic (Omega-6) fatty acids. These are considered to be essential by nutritionists since humans are unable to synthesize them, thus they must consume them from an external source.

* Many Essential Nutrients Found in Hemp Seed July 27, 2000
By Nancy Ross Ryan - Chicago Tribune

According to the latest research, there are about 45 nutrients that humans can't live without and which their bodies can't manufacture: 21 minerals, 13 vitamins, eight amino acids and two essential fatty acids. No single food has them all. But when a food is discovered that is a rich source of several essential nutrients, such as hemp seed, it makes nutrition news. Its promoters bill hemp seed as the soybean of the new millennium. In addition to containing vitamins and minerals.

In 1992 a consortium of 20 British farmers requested permission to grow industrial hemp, a crop that had been banned since 1971. Home Office Minister Michael Jack saw no reason to oppose the request since industrial hemp had been grown for years on the Continent "without any problems". The farmers received licenses to cultivate 1500 acres. In 1993 a consortium of 10 Canadian farmers requested permission to grow hemp, a crop that had been banned since 1923. The federal government informed them the law would have to be changed before commercial plots could be harvested. However, seeing that "farmers in Canada are very interested in it", Health Minister Diane Marleau issued a permit for 18 acres of experimental plots. The next year Parliament enabled commercial harvests.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

-Marijuana Is Neuroprotective, Journal Says-

Utrecht, The Netherlands: Compounds in marijuana dramatically protect brain cells during acute head trauma, according to research findings published in this week's Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers reported that THC injected intracerebrally in rats significantly "reduce[d]
neuronal injury ... compared with control animals." Scientists concluded, "These results provide evidence that the cannabinoid system can serve to protect the brain against neurodegeneration."

A HEALTHY BODY IN AND OUT!

* Hemp is a strong, natural medicine: hemp oil is the richest known source of "the good" polyunsaturated essential fatty acids, proven to be effective treatment for patients suffering from cancer, cardiovascular disease, glandular atrophy, gallstones, kidney degeneration, acne, dry skin, menstrual problems, and immune deficiency.

* Cannabis extracts served as the second and third most prescribed medicines in the U.S. from 1842 until the 1890's. These medicines ere produced by Eli Lily, Parke-Davis, Tilden's, Brothers Smith. Squib, and other British and American companies. During this entire period of time, there was not one reported death from cannabis extract medicines.

* Hemp extracts can be used to treat a variety of physical and mental ailments which include tuberculosis, glaucoma, depression, and the side effects of cancer therapy. Prior to thiscentury, cannabis extracts were the most commonly used medicines throughout the world.

* Hemp is nutrient-rich: the seeds of the hemp plant contain approximately 25 percent protein, almost as much as soybeans, and in fact are far higher in fiber and certain vitamins and minerals.

* Hemp is delicious: hemp foodstuffs currently on the market include cooking oil, salad dressing,
cheese, flavored seeds, non-dairy milk, hemp flour for high-quality baked goods, and soy-type products such as hemp burgers.

* Hemp is a natural beauty product: hemp seeds are composed of 30 percent oils, which are the highest natural source of linoleic and linolenic acids, the compounds responsible for the luster of skin, hair and eyes; these extracts are now popular ingredients in massage oils, lip balms, soaps, shampoos, and lotions.
