Cool Howard and Misty Ride Again!

Why is Howard Riding Across North America?
http://leap.cc/howard/reason.html

Ending Prohibition/Legalizing Drugs

Once upon a time 90 years ago, heroin, cocaine and opium were part of an American’s medicine cabinet. Any adult could go to a pharmacy and buy them without a prescription in any quantity desired. Some people became addicted and ruined their lives. Trying to help those people, the prohibitionists made those drugs illegal in 1914. 6 years later alcohol was prohibited from legal sale. In 1937 marijuana became illegal.

In 1970 President Nixon declared a War on Drugs, a policy designed to rid America of the scourge of those drugs. After 34 years of serious police efforts, what are the results? Illegal drugs are stronger, cheaper and easier to buy. Every drug dealer arrested or killed has been replaced. Prohibition is a public policy disaster.

Are there any negative consequences? Many.

Everyday teens are sucked into the criminality of drug dealing, many are shot and some die. Everyday youth die of overdoses because they are afraid to call 911. Students go to old schools with under-qualified teachers because our felons are housed in brand-new prisons. Tens of thousands of kids eat their cereal at the same table mom and dad are cooking methamphetamine, the moonshine still of the 21st century. 2 million children are missing one or both parents who are behind bars for drug crimes. Ossama Bin Laden will kill American soldiers in Iraq with weapons bought with the billion dollars earned selling heroin.

Let us return to a policy based on personal responsibility and make all drug abuse cases a medical issue.

Back in Saddle, Preaching Drug Legalization
October 05, 2005
By Corey Kilgannon*
Source: New York Times*
New York -- After blowing into town yesterday on a one-eyed painted pony, a lanky Texan named Howard Wooldridge looked a bit beleaguered.
He had just arrived in Manhattan from the West Coast, but not on the red-eye, having left Los Angeles on March 4 on horseback and riding some 3,300 miles to New York. He rode, he said, about 25 miles a day, six days a week.

The items posted here describe the growing disillusionment with the War on Drugs in the law enforcement community, the growing support for reform, and some of the ways in which the Drug War corrupts police forces and encourages a war mentality that is at odds with a police officer's intended role as an officer of the peace.

DRUG PROHIBITION A CASH COW FOR POLICE AGENCIES http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v03/n1215/a10.html?397

Of course we in law enforcement lie about the number of drug users, etc. ( Editorial, Aug. 6 ). How else to force politicians to give us more money, which means more cops, which means more promotions to sergeant or lieutenant?
As a retired police officer and a member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, I know drug prohibition is a cash cow for those in police work and they have milked this baby for 30 years, even though we have never eliminated one drug job as a result. All drug dealers arrested or killed are quickly replaced.
Prohibition, you gotta love it.
