Drugwar Lies Linked to Schizophrenia

"All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level, that even the most stupid of those towards whom it is directed will understand it. Therefore, the intellectual level of the propaganda must be lower the larger the number of people who are to be influenced by it."

"Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise.

Official Questions Linking Pot with Schizophrenia By Nancy Pasternack
Source: Santa Cruz Sentinel*December 01, 2005
Mention a causal link between pot smoke and paranoid thoughts, and you may elicit a knowing chuckle from Santa Cruz's recreational drug users. But bring up a recent flurry of studies that link marijuana use to schizophrenia, and the buzz wears off quickly. "There's a lot of bamboozling going on here," says Valerie Corral, founder of the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana. Corral has a decidedly nonrecreational approach to both the drug and the political issues surrounding it.

Cannabis 'could reverse psychosis'

New Zealand Parliamentary Committee
Recommends Liberalizing Nation's Marijuana Laws
Says Moderate Adult Use Associated With Few Health Risks

August 13, 2003 - Wellington, New Zealand

CannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archives

THE OFFICIAL STORY: DEBUNKING "GUTTER SCIENCE"
After 15 days of taking testimony and more than a year's legal deliberation, DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L. Young formally urged the DEA to allow doctors to prescribe marijuana.

In a September 1988 judgement, he ruled: "The evidence in this record clearly shows that marijuana has been accepted as capable of relieving the distress of great numbers of very ill people, and doing so with safety under medical supervision

. . . It would be unreasonable, arbitrary and capricious for the DEA to continue to stand between those sufferers and the benefits of this substance in light of the evidence in this record. In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man."

Government Doublespeak
Since 1976, our federal government (e.g., NIDA, NIH, DEA*, and Action), police sponsored groups (like DARE*), and special interest groups (like PDFA*) have proclaimed to public, press, and parent groups alike that they have "absolute evidence" of the shocking negative effects of marijuana smoking.

John P. Walters, appointed "Drug Czar" by President George Bush Jr., is uniquely qualified for his new job. He was actually involved in the Iran-Contra Drug Trafficking Cover-up.

Dr. Heath/Tulane Study, 1974
The Hype: Brain Damage and Dead Monkeys
In 1974, California Governor Ronald Reagan was asked about decriminalizing marijuana. After producing the Heath/Tulane University study, the so-called "Great Communicator" proclaimed, "The most reliable scientific sources say permanent brain damage is one of the inevitable results of the use of marijuana." (L.A. Times)

The Facts: Suffocation of Research Animals
As reported in Playboy, the Heath "Voodoo" Research methodology involved strapping Rhesus monkeys into a chair and pumping them with equivalent of 63 Colombian strength joints in "five minutes, through gas masks," losing no smoke.

The monkeys were suffocating! Three to five minutes of oxygen deprivation causes brain damage "dead brain cells." (Red Cross Lifesaving and Water Safety Manual) With the concentration of smoke used, the monkeys were a bit like a person running the engine of a car in a locked garage for 5, 10, 15 minutes at a time every day! The Heath Monkey study was actually a study in animal asphyxiation and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Now, in 1999, 17 years have passed and not a single word of Dr. Heath's or Dr. Nahas' research has been verified! But their studies are still hauled out by the Partnership for a Drug Free America, the Drug Enforcement Administration, city and state narcotics bureaus, plus politicians and, in virtually all public instances, held up as scientific proof of the dangers of marijuana.

The Myth of Potent Pot by Daniel Forbes, Slate - November 20, 2002
The White House drug czar’s ludicrous pot potency claim.

Naha's Prescription for Bloated Police Budges
Incredibly, a famous study which found that cannabis reduces tumors (see Chapter 7), was originally ordered by the Federal Government on the premise that pot would hurt the immune system. This was based on the "Reefer Madness" studies done by the disreputable Dr. Gabriel Nahas of Columbia University in 1972.

This is the same Dr. Nahas who claimed his studies showed pot created chromosome, testosterone (male hormone) damage, and countless other horrible effects which suggested the breaking down of the immune system. Nahas' background is in the OSS/CIA and later the U.S. where he worked closely with Lyndon LaRouche and Kurt Waldheim.

* Nahas, in December 1983, under ridicule from his peers and a funding cut-off from NIDA renounced all his old THC metabolite build-up and unique chromosome petri dish tissue damage studies, conclusions, and extrapolations. In 1998, Nahas is still the darling favorite of the DEA and NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) yet no anti-marijuana studies of Nahas' have every been replicated in countless other research attempts. Columbia University specifically disassociated itself from Nahas' marijuana research in a specially called press conference in 1975!

Its findings were reported by the Sydney Morning Herald last month. "We don't see evidence of high psychological disturbance among the [long- term users,]" said chief investigator David Reilly. "The results seem unremarkable; the exceptional thing is that the respondents are unexceptional."

Study: Marijuana Eases Traumatic Memories

Natural Compound May Reduce Brain Trauma Damage

Israel To Soothe Trauma With Marijuana

Scientists have known for years that the brain makes substances almost identical to the active ingredient in marijuana, but the function of these cannabinoids remained mysterious. Researchers now say they help to extinguish traumatic memories. In certain situations, being able to forget is very important for emotional survival, said George Kunos, a neurobiologist at the National Institutes of Health.

Pot Blocks Painful Memories, Study Says
Dr. Lutz's study will only add to the argument in favour of decriminalization. But it is also a landmark in medical terms because it deals with one of the central survival mechanisms of the vertebrate brain: the ability to spot danger and flee from it.

Scientists have long understood that the brain can reprogram itself not to flee if the danger goes away. That is called extinction of a memory. But scientists have not understood how it happens.

Dr. Lutz's research shows that the answer lies in the body's store of cannabinoids, or cannabis-like natural chemicals, produced whenever the body needs them. The brain has a receptor for these cannabis-like chemicals and can use them to help reprogram the response to a fear.

A problem is that the fear reaction can stick around when no longer needed. That can lead to panic attacks or paralyzing irrational fear. Dr. Lutz said his finding could mean that a person in the grip of trauma might be able to summon up the terrible memory, with the help of a psychotherapist, then smoke marijuana to enhance the ability of the brain to extinguish the memory.

He said that smoking is by far the most efficient way of getting the substance to the brain, although researchers are looking at an aerosol to administer it straight to the lungs.

Marijuana May Spur New Brain Cells By Steve Mitchell
October 13, 2005*United Press International Source:Washington, D.C.*
Scientists said Thursday that marijuana appears to promote the development of new brain cells in rats and have anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, a finding that could have an impact on the national debate over medical uses of the drug. Other illegal and legal drugs, including opiates, alcohol, nicotine and cocaine, have been shown to suppress the formation of new brain cells when used chronically, but marijuana's effect on that process was uncertain.

Marijuana-Like Drugs Could Treat Schizophrenia, Study Suggests

He noted that "many schizophrenics smoke marijuana and claim it eases some of their symptoms.

Marijuana may help schizophrenia by Dana Larsen (01 Sept, 1999)
Cannabis can aid hyperactive dopamine systems
Researchers at the University of California speculate that THC and other cannabinoids may be useful in the treatment of schizophrenia. Some forms of schizophrenia are believed to be caused by a hyperactive dopamine system, and dopamine is regulated by anandamide, a chemical similar to THC but produced naturally in the body. Analysis of the cerebro-spinal fluid extracted from schizophrenics in Germany found levels of anadamide twice as high as a normal person's.

Cannabis and schizophrenia by Reverend Damuzi (02 Dec, 2004)

Cannabis use unlikely to be a cause of schizophrenia

In May 2004, The Lancet published a study by Dr John Macleod of the University of Birmingham which concluded that there was no proof that cannabis use causes schizophrenia.

"Cannabis use appears to have increased substantially amongst young people over the past 30 years, from around 10% reporting use in 1969-70, to around 50% reporting use in 2001," reads the study.

"If the relation between use and schizophrenia were truly causal, and if the relative risk was around five-fold, then the incidence of schizophrenia should have more than doubled since 1970. However, population trends in schizophrenia incidence suggest that incidence has either been stable or slightly decreased over the relevant time period.

Previous studies found that people who have schizophrenia are more likely to smoke pot, but researchers were always unclear about whether pot use caused schizophrenia or schizophrenics sought to self-medicate with pot. A June 2000 study, for example, by Doctors Hambrecht and Hafner at Germany's University of Cologne hypothesized some schizophrenics might use cannabis "for self-medication against (or coping with) symptoms of schizophrenia, particularly negative and depressive symptoms." It speculated further that such patients probably counterbalance low prefrontal dopamine levels with the dopamine regulating effects of cannabis.

Cannabinoid consciousness by Pete Brady (31 May, 2000)
UK researcher studies the science of being stoned.
Pertwee acknowledged my concerns, but said that he has not encountered scientists who do biased cannabis research. He asserted instead that biased organizations, pressure groups, and individuals distort research results for political purposes.

He says he is proud of the ICRS: "We're all strictly scientists. We're extremely open-minded. All we want is to find out the facts and report them. The lack of a political agenda makes us very credible and very useful."

When I asked if it troubled him that anti-marijuana forces might use his discoveries to prevent peoples' brains from being affected by THC, Pertwee replied, "How our published discoveries are used by others is outside our control – that is so throughout science."

Still, no matter how others may pervert or misuse his research, I see Pertwee as a gentleman and an innocent, an honorable man fascinated by the wonders of nature. He ended our conversations by saying that his interest in cannabinoids has as much to do with his interest in the origins of life as it does in pure science and medicine.

"I am excited about cannabinoids because they reveal that we have these marvelous systems in our bodies," he said "Where do they come from? Why are they there? The endogenous cannabinoid system, with its vast network of receptors and chemical messengers, deals with pain, muscle, motor function, thought, and mood. It's been detected in very primitive organisms, and yet it has survived evolution from very early on and therefore it must be quite an important system for us to have. It's a wonderful system to study."

Cannabis link to schizophrenia: The LIE exposed!!
11-09-2003 Koen van Eijk.

Castricum - During the 1930´s, you would ´become homophilia´ from cocaine use. In the 1970´s, schizophrenia was caused by failing parenting by the mother. It all turned out to be a hoax. Again, a new medical myth appears to be born: Now you become schozophrenic from hash and weed.

Psychiatrist Daniel van Dijk was surprised when he heard the news last week: The use of hash and weed, cannabis, would be the cause of 200 more schzophrenia patients in the Netherlands each year. The media reported this on basis of a Trimbos-Institute research.

According to Trimbos, even people without genetical indications would become psychotic of the intensive use (smoking) of cannabis. The underlying message: Softdrugs are not as innocent as being claimed. Coffeeshops are places that threaten the health of the youth.

Translation: Nol van Schaik

Schizophrenia is a brain disease, in exactly the same sense that Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis are brain diseases. (Not caused by cannabis).
lunaria

Extreme use of cannabis could potentiate depression for some people, as could extreme alcohol consumption, exstacy, or even coffee, and many other things, even listening to dark music for long enough,or being around depressing things, but to say just because someone smokes cannabis, they are more likely to get depressed or become skitizophrenic is ludicrous. The state of someones mind is a product of so many many things...to make a cassual link and focus on one aspect of a persons life as a signifigant contributer to a particular state of mind is quite irresponsible, especi ally when these suggestions come from the medical community who really should have the intelligence to avoid such narrow minded conclusions, especially regarding the human mind which is far from understood.

Those studies found no proof cannabis impaired mental health. Cannabis was found relatively harmless when compared with alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs.

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett, who preceded Clarke and was lauded by the UK cannabis community for supporting softening of cannabis penalties and for approving the marijuana cultivation licenses for GW Pharmaceuticals, is pissed at Blair and Clarke for criticizing reclassification.

Blunkett, who is now in another government post, says the Advisory Council gave him solid advice before he reclassified cannabis, and that he did not make a mistake by placing cannabis in Class C.

Blair said the Advisory Council's report, due by December, 2005,
might provide the ammo he needs to send cannabis back to Class B...

Here's a brief list of what schizophrenia is not, despite popular misperceptions. It's not a "split personality," such as the personalities portrayed in Sybil or The Three Faces of Eve. These movies depict people suffering from a mental disorder called a dissociative identity disorder, which is far less common than schizophrenia and usually brought on in women by sexual or physical abuse in childhood.

To Smoke or not to Smoke: A Cannabis Odyssey By Lester Grinspoon, MD
As the senior author of a book on schizophrenia, I found myself with what I estimated would be two to three relatively free months before my co-authors would finish their chapters. Because I had become concerned that so many young people were using the terribly dangerous drug marijuana, I decided to use the time to review the medical literature so that I could write a reasonably objective and scientifically sound paper on the harmfulness of this substance.

During my initial foray into this literature I discovered, to my astonishment, that I had to seriously question what I believed I knew about cannabis. As I began to appreciate that what I thought I understood was largely based on myths, old and new, I realized how little my training in science and medicine had protected me against this misinformation. I had become not just a victim of a disinformation campaign, but because I was a physician, one of its agents as well.

"An accident, a loss of a parent, alcohol or marijuana can precipitate schizophrenia but not cause it. (Marijuana) has never been responsible for a death and I can assure you it has never caused schizophrenia."

Time Magazine Praises Medical Cannabis As "Legitimate"
NORML's Weekly News Bulletin
December 8, 2005 - Washington, DC, USA
"Research into the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis continued to bolster the case for the medicinal use of marijuana, making the patient pot laws' that have passed in 11 states seem less like a social movement than a legitimate medical trend," states last week's issue of Time Magazine.

The magazine cited a pair of recent studies investigating the use of medicinal cannabinoids. The first, published last month in the journal Rheumatology, found that cannabis extracts reduced pain and inflammation and improved sleep in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Time also cited a previous preclinical trial published in the Journal of Neuroscience that found that the administration of synthetic cannabinoids in both animals and in human brain tissue prevented the neurodegenerative decline associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical reviews published by the Society for Neuroscience and in the journal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, among others, have also noted that cannabinoids may be clinically useful in the treatment of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson's disease.

Revolt Against Clarke

Expert Advisers Threaten Revolt Against ClarkeBy James Randerson
Guardian Unlimited, Science January 14, 2006 United Kingdom*
Members of a top drug advisory panel who wrote a secret report to the home secretary on cannabis may resign if the government reclassifies the drug to class B, the Guardian has learned. They are concerned that Charles Clarke is considering upgrading cannabis and say this would be in direct contradiction to the findings of their unpublished report. They say such a move would set a "damaging precedent", and that their report - which the Guardian has seen - explicitly rules out reclassification.

Drugwar Lies Linked to Schizophrenia

'allowing more stringent laws and sharper punishents'
Adrian Butler Daily Post March 30, 2005
Cannabis is shaping up to be an important issue in the coming general election. With crime always at the top of the agenda, Home Secretary Charles Clarke last week ordered a review of his predecessor David Blunkett's decision to downgrade the drug to Class C in January, 2004

'This is slightly awkward for me',oh dear,
Jonathan Dimbleby Programme 27th March
David Cameron, who originally backed calls for the drug to be downgraded from Class B to C, admitted the issue was "slightly awkward" for him. He said there had been disagreements in the past but the Conservatives stood firm on reversing current Government policy.

"The Conservative Party consistently argued that it was wrong to re-classify from B to C. The Government has now apparently changed its mind.

British Decrim Law To Take Effect In January
November 20, 2003 - London, United Kingdom
The British House of Lords voted this week 63 to 37 to downgrade marijuana from a Class B to a Class C scheduled drug so that its possession is no longer an arrestable offense under British law. The vote was the final hurdle facing the reclassification proposal, which was initially announced by Home Secretary David Blunkett two years ago. Marijuana will be officially downgraded to a Class C "non-arrestable" soft drug on January 29, 2004.

Under reclassification, individuals found in possession of "personal use" amounts of marijuana will be cautioned by police, but no longer arrested. (Police will retain the discretion to make an arrest under special "aggravated" circumstances, such as if marijuana is smoked on school grounds.) Presently, about 80,000 Britons are arrested annually for possessing cannabis.

David Blunkett has urged Tony Blair not to reverse the decision that he took as Home Secretary to reclassify cannabis. Senior government insiders say that Mr Blunkett, now a backbench MP, is furious at plans to reinstate the drug's original class B status less than two years after he moved it into the low-risk C category.

Tony Blair and Caroline Flint take Magic Mushrooms
On July 18, 2005 the UK Home Office will transubstantiate psilocybe mushrooms from a legal food and sacrament into a banned class A drug.

"Caroline Flint, the Home Office minister, who spearheaded the legislation through parliament shortly before the general election, said mushrooms could trigger psychosis and there was evidence users could be at risk of self-harm. However, a Dutch study found no evidence to link magic mushrooms with psychosis and said that mushrooms did not lower users' violence threshold. Since consumption usually took place at home or in the open air, "there is no inconvenience to other people," it concluded."

Pre-election nerves are getting out of hand. Consider the weekend madness from the Home Office on drugs. The new Home Secretary, Charles Clarke, once confessed to The Times that he was eager not to appear a liberal. Brits Say NO Reclassification!

Clarke Will Not Change Legal Status of Cannabis*
by Times Online and PA News January 18, 2006 United Kingdom*
Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary, is expected to rule out another reclassification of cannabis tomorrow despite fresh fears about the drug’s side-effects. Concerns about a link between super-strength varieties and mental illness have mounted since his predecessor David Blunkett down-graded the drug from Class B to C. But Mr Clarke is expected launch a major public information campaign instead of adding to confusion by again changing the classification.

Clarke To Announce Decision on Cannabis Classification
Wednesday, January 18, 2006
The home secretary, Charles Clarke, will announce tomorrow whether or not the government is intending to return cannabis to class B status. His statement will set out the government's response to a report from the advisory council on the misuse of drugs, looking at the latest scientific evidence on cannabis potency and links with mental health problems such as schizophrenia. At the weekend experts from that panel - whose internal Home Office review has not been made public, but rejects reclassification back up to class B - threatened to resign if the home secretary ignores that advice.

ACMD: marijuana's risks do not warrant increasing penalties

NORML's Weekly News Bulletin -- January 19, 2006
Britain: No Reversal On Cannabis Classification London, UK
British officials have rejected an appeal to reclassify cannabis as a Class B prohibited substance. Their rejection is in accordance with the recommendations of the British Advisory Council on the Misuses of Drugs (ACMD) which determined that marijuana's relative health risks do not warrant increasing penalties for those who use it.
