Marilyn Bowman, in a battery of psychological tests on chronic cannabis users in Jamaica in 1972, found "no impairment of physiological, sensory and perceptual-motor performance, tests of concept formation, abstracting ability and cognitive style and tests of memory."

These Jamaicans had smoked anywhere from six to 31 years (16.6 mean average) and the average age at the first puff was at 12 years and six months.

In the 1975 study between users and non-users, no difference was found in plasma testosterone, no difference in total nutrition, slightly higher performance on the intelligence sub-tests (not statistically significant), and "a basic measure of cell-mediated immunity was no less vigorous in the users.

Scientists have known for years that the brain makes substances almost identical to the active ingredient in marijuana, but the function of these cannabinoids remained mysterious. Researchers now say they help to extinguish traumatic memories. In certain situations, being able to forget is very important for emotional survival, said George Kunos, a neurobiologist at the National Institutes of Health.

Pot Blocks Painful Memories, Study Says
Dr. Lutz's study will only add to the argument in favour of decriminalization. But it is also a landmark in medical terms because it deals with one of the central survival mechanisms of the vertebrate brain: the ability to spot danger and flee from it.

Scientists have long understood that the brain can reprogram itself not to flee if the danger goes away. That is called extinction of a memory. But scientists have not understood how it happens.

Dr. Lutz's research shows that the answer lies in the body's store of cannabinoids, or cannabis-like natural chemicals, produced whenever the body needs them. The brain has a receptor for these cannabis-like chemicals and can use them to help reprogram the response to a fear.

A problem is that the fear reaction can stick around when no longer needed. That can lead to panic attacks or paralyzing irrational fear. Dr. Lutz said his finding could mean that a person in the grip of trauma might be able to summon up the terrible memory, with the help of a psychotherapist, then smoke marijuana to enhance the ability of the brain to extinguish the memory.

He said that smoking is by far the most efficient way of getting the substance to the brain, although researchers are looking at an aerosol to administer it straight to the lungs.

Cannabis use unlikely to be a cause of schizophrenia

In May 2004, The Lancet published a study by Dr John Macleod of the University of Birmingham which concluded that there was no proof that cannabis use causes schizophrenia.

"Cannabis use appears to have increased substantially amongst young people over the past 30 years, from around 10% reporting use in 1969-70, to around 50% reporting use in 2001," reads the study.

"If the relation between use and schizophrenia were truly causal, and if the relative risk was around five-fold, then the incidence of schizophrenia should have more than doubled since 1970. However, population trends in schizophrenia incidence suggest that incidence has either been stable or slightly decreased over the relevant time period.

Previous studies found that people who have schizophrenia are more likely to smoke pot, but researchers were always unclear about whether pot use caused schizophrenia or schizophrenics sought to self-medicate with pot. A June 2000 study, for example, by Doctors Hambrecht and Hafner at Germany's University of Cologne hypothesized some schizophrenics might use cannabis "for self-medication against (or coping with) symptoms of schizophrenia, particularly negative and depressive symptoms." It speculated further that such patients probably counterbalance low prefrontal dopamine levels with the dopamine regulating effects of cannabis.

Pertwee acknowledged my concerns, but said that he has not encountered scientists who do biased cannabis research. He asserted instead that biased organizations, pressure groups, and individuals distort research results for political purposes.

He says he is proud of the ICRS: "We're all strictly scientists. We're extremely open-minded. All we want is to find out the facts and report them. The lack of a political agenda makes us very credible and very useful."

When I asked if it troubled him that anti-marijuana forces might use his discoveries to prevent peoples' brains from being affected by THC, Pertwee replied, "How our published discoveries are used by others is outside our control – that is so throughout science."

Still, no matter how others may pervert or misuse his research, I see Pertwee as a gentleman and an innocent, an honorable man fascinated by the wonders of nature. He ended our conversations by saying that his interest in cannabinoids has as much to do with his interest in the origins of life as it does in pure science and medicine.

"I am excited about cannabinoids because they reveal that we have these marvelous systems in our bodies," he said "Where do they come from? Why are they there? The endogenous cannabinoid system, with its vast network of receptors and chemical messengers, deals with pain, muscle, motor function, thought, and mood. It's been detected in very primitive organisms, and yet it has survived evolution from very early on and therefore it must be quite an important system for us to have. It's a wonderful system to study."

Extreme use of cannabis could potentiate depression for some people, as could extreme alcohol consumption,exstacy, or even coffee,and many other things, even listening to dark music for long enough,or being around depressing things, but to say just because someone smokes cannabis, they are more likely to get depressed or become skitizophrenic is ludicrous. The state of someones mind is a product of so many many things...to make a cassual link and focus on one aspect of a persons life as a signifigant contributer to a particular state of mind is quite irresponsible,especi ally when these suggestions come from the medical community who really should have the intelligence to avoid such narrow minded conclusions, especially regarding the human mind which is far from understood.

UK cannabis opponents go bonkers

How much could have changed in a year? Does the prime minister really expect that another study, conducted only a year later, would directly contradict what previous studies had found? The answer is yes, and he's still waiting for someone to find those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq too.

The new Advisory Council study seen by many as a needless farce, given that experts spent several years studying cannabis before cannabis policies were changed in 2004. Those studies found no proof cannabis impaired mental health. Cannabis was found relatively harmless when compared with alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs.

Former Home Secretary David Blunkett, who preceded Clarke and was lauded by the UK cannabis community for supporting softening of cannabis penalties and for approving the marijuana cultivation licenses for GW Pharmaceuticals, is pissed at Blair and Clarke for criticizing reclassification.

Blunkett, who is now in another government post, says the Advisory Council gave him solid advice before he reclassified cannabis, and that he did not make a mistake by placing cannabis in Class C.

Blair said the Advisory Council's report, due by December, 2005,
might provide the ammo he needs to send cannabis back to Class B...

As the senior author of a book on schizophrenia, I found myself with what I estimated would be two to three relatively free months before my co-authors would finish their chapters. Because I had become concerned that so many young people were using the terribly dangerous drug marijuana, I decided to use the time to review the medical literature so that I could write a reasonably objective and scientifically sound paper on the harmfulness of this substance.

During my initial foray into this literature I discovered, to my astonishment, that I had to seriously question what I believed I knew about cannabis. Time Magazine Praises Medical Cannabis As "Legitimate"

"Research into the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of cannabis continued to bolster the case for the medicinal use of marijuana, making the patient pot laws' that have passed in 11 states seem less like a social movement than a legitimate medical trend," states last week's issue of Time Magazine.

The magazine cited a pair of recent studies investigating the use of medicinal cannabinoids. The first, published last month in the journal Rheumatology, found that cannabis extracts reduced pain and inflammation and improved sleep in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Time also cited a previous preclinical trial published in the Journal of Neuroscience that found that the administration of synthetic cannabinoids in both animals and in human brain tissue prevented the neurodegenerative decline associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Clinical reviews published by the Society for Neuroscience and in the journal Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of North America, among others, have also noted that cannabinoids may be clinically useful in the treatment of several neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Parkinson's disease.

The British House of Lords voted this week 63 to 37 to downgrade marijuana from a Class B to a Class C scheduled drug so that its possession is no longer an arrestable offense under British law. The vote was the final hurdle facing the reclassification proposal, which was initially announced by Home Secretary David Blunkett two years ago. Marijuana will be officially downgraded to a Class C "non-arrestable" soft drug on January 29, 2004.


Under reclassification, individuals found in possession of "personal use" amounts of marijuana will be cautioned by police, but no longer arrested. (Police will retain the discretion to make an arrest under special "aggravated" circumstances, such as if marijuana is smoked on school grounds.) Presently, about 80,000 Britons are arrested annually for possessing cannabis.

Britain: No Reversal On Cannabis Classification London, UK
British officials have rejected an appeal to reclassify cannabis as a Class B prohibited substance. Their rejection is in accordance with the recommendations of the British Advisory Council on the Misuses of Drugs (ACMD) which determined that marijuana's relative health risks do not warrant increasing penalties for those who use it.
