Steve Kubby’s Life Is In Danger Because Immigration Canada and California Law Enforcement Broke the Law. Posted by*Richard Cowan on*2005-01-27 16:20:00 If Kubby survives his ordeal and eventually gets justice, the point will remain that Immigration Canada officials lied and broke the law repeatedly. They are the real criminals, along with so-called “law enforcement” in Placer County. What are you going to do about it, Canada? I will be in Placer County on Tuesday morning for the hearings and will report to you on Tuesday or Wednesday. Like everyone else, they are both real concerned about the plight of Steve Kubby. As we provided in the last Kubby update, Steve is able to take Marinol (not that it will solve all his problems, but it might keep him alive for a while) right now. My wife is a doctor, and has software on her PalmPilot which tells her the average national cost of most medications. She looked up Marinol, and the cost for thirty 10mg tablets is around $550. We have no idea what Kubby’s dosage is, but if he takes one 10mg twice a day (typical dosage), that’s $1100 per month. The Kubbys could use your help. Michele sent me an e-mail and said she will call me today, so I’ll be able to relay to her how supportive all of you have been, and perhaps get a bit more of an update on Steve’s status. In the meantime, here is the e-mail she sent out to friends and supporters: I just spoke with Steve for the first time this evening since 4 pm on Thursday, while he waited for his flight. He got booked into the Placer jail late this afternoon. He is currently being housed in the infirmary. Through the good graces of Dr. Tod Mikuriya, financial help from gracious funders and dedicated locals in Auburn, I was able to procure Marinol for Steve. When Steve first entered the jail, his blood pressure had risen to 170/120. The jail medical staff were concerned and administered the Marinol. Steve says he feels his blood pressure lowering, but he can tell that Marinol is not going to be effective in the long run. Dr. Connors, Steve’s BC Cancer Agency doctor, spoke with the LA Times and told them that Marinol will not be effective if he needs to take it for awhile because he needs the cannabinoids. Dr. Connors also cautioned that Steve could be in severe danger in a short amount of time if he is not protected from the chemicals flowing through his body. Steve sounds strong, now. This arrest was different from the previous two because he was prepared. Bill McPike got him ready to be arrested upon his arrival so, being prepared, the stress was less. You see, what is so challenging about his disease is that when he has a flight or fright stress response, the adrenal chemicals that have gotten stored in his nervous system are released. It is this sudden release of these deadly chemicals during a stressful situation that cause the life threatening situations. It is difficult to get law enforcement to understand medical marijuana and the needs of med pot patients. I can understand why there is a lack of understanding, law enforcement are not trained in the medical profession. In prison, law enforcement has had different reactions to Steve. Some are sympathetic, others go out of their way to remind him that he no longer has any rights and is a prisoner. Some completely ignore that Steve has a medical problem and needs special care. One female officer would not let Steve cover himself with blanket while she interrogated him, even though he teeth were chattering and the blanket was sitting right next to him. When Steve gets chills, he is inclined to get pneumonia. Mostly though, it is the ignorance of a medical marijuana patient’s needs that is the biggest hurdle to overcome. It is as if we live in parallel universes and we don’t want to cross the line to understand each other. This misunderstanding is what is causing so much pain and suffering. I can only hope that our particular situation can shed light on the darkness surrounding this issue. Steve is willing to put his life on the line so that others will not have too. We are truly blessed that we have such wonderful supporters and friends. So many others have suffered far worse abuse than Steve and I have - in silence. I just hope that, through shedding light on our suffering, others will be able to be spared what we are going through. I have given up wondering why there is such a violent reaction to someone peacefully puffing on a cannabis cigarette, if I didn’t, I think I would go insane with the absurdity of it all. Steve only gets one free phone call, I’m not sure when I will hear from him again. Currently, he is scheduled to have an arraignment hearing in Placer at 1 pm on Tuesday, January 31st. This hearing is going to be an arraignment hearing on his misdemeanor violation of probation. Bill McPike, Steve’s attorney, has indicated that Cattran, the prosecutor, will probably ask for more time. I will not be able to attend. I have many duties trying to pack up our old life and wait around to find out what our new life will be like. In the end, it is the family on the outside who suffers the most. Our house seems empty and chill. As soon as I saw Steve’s clothes scattered about like he is apt to do, I burst into tears. I don’t know how this will end, but I believe that it will be alright. I am going to be offline after Monday, I’m not sure when I’ll be up again. I can be reached all weekend via e-mail. I couldn’t do this without all of your good wishes and support. Thank you for being there. -Michele "First they ignore you; then they mock you; then they punish you; then you win." Ghandi hammeroftruth.com

The Drug War Refugees
Vengeance is mine sayth Vigilante Sheriff’s
DRUG CASE DROPPED -- MAN GETS HIS POT BACK By Wayne Wilson, Bee Staff Writer If you never thought you'd live to see the day police would have to return marijuana and guns to a person they had busted on drug charges, you should have been in Auburn on Wednesday at the Placer County Sheriff's Department. Kubby Campaign's award-winning 'South Park' TV Commercial ![]() Stan: Dude!* Kubby kicks ass! ![]() Peter McWilliams.org From the 2000 complaint to the Orange County, California grand jury. ------------------------------------- ATTACHMENT -5- CANNABINOID INHIBITION OF NORADRENALINE ------------------------------------- Br J Pharmacol 1999 Jan;126(2):457-66 Effect of the cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN55212-2 on sympathetic cardiovascular regulation. Niederhoffer N, Szabo B Pharmakologisches Institut der Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat, Freiburg i. Br., Germany. 1. The aim of the present study was to analyse the cardiovascular actions of the synthetic CB1/CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN55212-2, and specifically to determine its sites of action on sympathetic cardiovascular regulation. 2. Pithed rabbits in which the sympathetic outflow was continuously stimulated electrically or which received a pressor infusion of noradrenaline were used to study peripheral prejunctional and direct vascular effects, respectively. For studying effects on brain stem cardiovascular regulatory centres, drugs were administered into the cisterna cerebellomedullaris in conscious rabbits. Overall cardiovascular effects of the cannabinoid were studied in conscious rabbits with intravenous drug administration. 3. In pithed rabbits in which the sympathetic outflow was continuously electrically stimulated, intravenous injection of WIN55212-2 (5, 50 and 500 microg kg(-1)) markedly reduced blood pressure, the spillover of noradrenaline into plasma and the plasma noradrenaline concentration, and these effects were antagonized by the CB1 cannabinoid receptor-selective antagonist SR141716A. The hypotensive and the sympathoinhibitory effect of WIN55212-2 was shared by CP55940, another mixed CB1/CB2 cannabinoid receptor agonist, but not by WIN55212-3, the enantiomer of WIN55212-2, which lacks affinity for cannabinoid binding sites. WIN55212-2 had no effect on vascular tone established by infusion of noradrenaline in pithed rabbits. 4. Intracisternal application of WIN55212-2 (0.1, 1 and 10 microg kg(-1)) in conscious rabbits increased blood pressure and the plasma noradrenaline concentration and elicited bradycardia; this latter effect was antagonized by atropine. 5. In conscious animals, intravenous injection of WIN55212-2 (5 and 50 microg kg(-1)) caused bradycardia, slight hypotension, no change in the plasma noradrenaline concentration, and an increase in renal sympathetic nerve firing. The highest dose of WIN55212-2 (500 microg kg(-1)) elicited hypotension and tachycardia, and sympathetic nerve activity and the plasma noradrenaline concentration declined. 6. The results obtained in pithed rabbits indicate that activation of CB1 cannabinoid receptors leads to marked peripheral prejunctional inhibition of noradrenaline release from postganglionic sympathetic axons. Intracisternal application of WIN55212-2 uncovered two effects on brain stem cardiovascular centres: sympathoexcitation and activation of cardiac vagal fibres. The highest dose of systemically administered WIN55212-2 produced central sympathoinhibition; the primary site of this action is not known. ----------------------------------------- ATTACHMENT -6- CANNABINOIDS FOUND TO SUPPRESS PHEOS ----------------------------------------- The DeQuattro Study includes a University of Toronto study which shows cannabinoids suppress pheochromocytoma cells: Cell Bio Int 1996 Feb:20(2):147-57 Study Cannabinoid enantiomer action on the cytoarchitecture. Wilson RG Jr, Tahir SK, Mechoulam R, Zimmerman S, Zimmerman AM, Department of Zoology, University of Toronto, Canada, "...in general, cell viability and cell proliferation were suppressed to a much greater extent with HU-210 on...PC-12 cells." HU-210 is a synthetic cannabinoid and PC-12 are actual pheochrochytoma cells, just like those in Steve Kubby. ----------------------------------------- Judge Says Kubby Must Be Sent to US. Medipot Fugitive? Fugitive of Cancer Treatment?
Doctors Weigh in on Effectiveness of Medipot By Penne Usher,
Source: Auburn Journal* January 13, 2006 California Medical marijuana activist Steve Kubby contends if he is returned to the United States and not allowed to smoke marijuana daily he will die, but doctors differ on whether all the pot Kubby smokes is really good for his health. Kubby's Canadian doctor said the one-time California gubernatorial candidate smokes cannabis to alleviate symptoms of his adrenal cancer. Medipot Fugitive To Stay in Canada By Penne Usher Source: Auburn Journal* January 13, 2006 California Steve Kubby, a fugitive from Placer County and internationally known medical-marijuana activist, will stay in Canada for the time being despite an order to leave the country last week. The Canadian Border Services rejected the Kubby family's bid for protection Dec. 9 and ordered the Kubby family out of the country by Jan. 12 or face arrest. Michele Kubby, Steve's wife, asked a Canadian court Monday for a stay based on legal motions. She said she had limited success. ![]() Thanks, BGreen #21 posted by ElPatricio on January 13, 2006 Thank you for informing Cannabis News readers about Dr. Connors' expert knowledge of Steve Kubby's rare medical condition, compared to the ill-informed Dr. Fred Harvey, who was quoted in an Auburn Journal article. As a former city editor of that Placer County newspaper, who also attended much of Steve Kubby's trial in 2000-01, I can add more medical information about Steve's condition from a physician who first examined Steve more than 20 years ago. Dr. Vincent DeQuattro was a professor of medicine at the busy USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he directed the hypertension unit and became a leading specialist in malignant pheochromocytoma, or adrenal cancer. He wasn't the first physician to diagnose Steve's condition, but he had seen more than 100 other patients with the 1-in-a-million illness, making him one of world's experts. When Steve saw DeQuattro in the mid-1980s, Steve's high-blood-pressure symptoms had returned, and his tumor had spread to his liver. Previous surgeries to remove the tumors had initially appeared to work. In benign adrenal cancer, the tumors never return, but in Steve's case they did. Steve Kubby was part of a cohort of malignant adrenal cancer cases that DeQuattro referred to the Mayo Clinic for experimental therapy. He lost track of Steve and, as he testified at his trial, assumed he had died along with the rest of the group he'd sent to the Mayo. After Steve and Michele Kubby's 1999 arrest, DeQuattro conducted a battery of tests on Steve, and concluded that Steve still had tumors, and that he had potentially fatal blood levels of adrenaline. As he testified at the trial, if you put a quart of Steve's blood in someone else, they could die. Incidentally, and because it's never been published elsewhere, Dr. DeQuattro tested hair samples of each Kubby for the presence of any drug except cannabis, and found nothing. That supports the Kubbys' contention that they did not know about the peyote buds found in the guest bedroom. Anyhow, Placer County prosecutors appeared convinced that Kubby did not have have malignant form of adrenal cancer. They instead took the word of an untrained jail matron that Steve was faking his symptoms while in custody. At the trial, they tried to have their expert medical witness, Dr. Rees Jones, testify that cannabis had nothing to do with Kubby's survival of a disease that usually kills in less than 10 years and has no effective treatment. The medicine patients take to control the high blood pressure turns them into zombies, and if they are lucky enough to survive more than 10 years, the side effects include Parkinson-like symptoms, DeQuattro told me. By the way, expert witness Rees Jones is well known for his anti-marijuana views, and has taught at classes for the California Narcotics Officers Association. Even after the trial, Placer County prosecutors argued in court pleadings that Kubby was merely a recreational potsmoker whose life was not at risk if he was jailed without access to cannabis for his medicine. They said even his doctor's tests showed that pot had no effect on Kubby's blood pressure. When I shared that informatiion with DeQuattro in an e-mail, he was livid. "THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF MY TESTIMONY." I quoted to DeQuattro from the Placer County brief: "Dr. DeQuattro did conceded [sic] that the defendant may not be currently suffering from malignant pheochromocitoma. The defendants [sic] motion to terminate probation should be denied." DeQuattro's response: "WHY DO THESE MISERABLE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE PEOPLE DISTORT THE FACTS SO WILLFULLY AND THEN CAST STONES.???" Dr. DeQuattro and I exchanged e-mails a week or so before he left on vacation in Hawaii. While there, he died in a snorkeling accident. So, as I told the Refugee Board in Vancouver, those were his last words about Steve Kubby's medical condition. It just goes to show you how a belief in the war on drugs can predispose otherwise reasonable people to remain ignorant and believe hogwash rather than believe anything favorable about cannabis. Sadly, it can also destroy their humanity. Pat McCartney Auburn, California Expert Says Pot Best Hope for Kubby Endocannabinoids – The Brain's Cannabis The Brain's Own Marijuana Virtues' of Ganja A chemical found in cannabis can act like an antidepressant, researchers have found.
