New Mexico House Commies Shelve MMJ Bill
New? Mexico, just another page in the book of fascists.
SOS Different Déjà Vu Drugwar Lies Linked to Schizophrenia BEYOND PROHIBITION: THE CASE FOR DRUG LEGALIZATION by New Mexico Governor Gary E. Johnson I recall when I was in high school in 1971. An Albuquerque police officer came in, lit up some marijuana weeds and said, "If you smell this, run. This is marijuana and you need to know that if you do marijuana, we're going to catch you and we're going to put you in jail." I remember raising my hand at that time, asking, "What are you going to do, put 15 million people in jail?" The police officer said, "I don't care about that. I just care about the fact that if you do it, we're going to catch you and we're going to put you in jail." I'm afraid that prophecy may be coming true. In 1997 there were about 700,000 arrests for marijuana-related offenses. But David W. Murray, a special assistant to national drug czar John Walters, had little or no effect on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which gave the measure a do-pass with bipartisan support. And some senators said Murray’s presentation was heavy-handed. Anti-Drug Group Fights Medical-Marijuana Bill By Steve Terrell Source: Santa Fe New Mexican February 11, 2006* The founder of a New York-based anti-drug group came to the Capitol on Friday to persuade legislators to vote against a bill that would make marijuana legal for patients suffering from some serious medical conditions. Steven Steiner of Dads and Moms Against Drug Dealers said that passage of SB258 -- which is scheduled to be considered today by the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee -- would lead to more drug abuse in the state. If you want a conservative audience, don't go to Yale University. (laughter). At the debate, Governor Johnson went first and gave his opening statement. It was well-received. I know I'm at a disadvantage at this point, so I asked how many in the audience believe we ought to legalize marijuana. 80 percent raised their hand. I looked down at the 20 percent who didn't raise their hand, and they're all DEA agents in the front row. (laughter) I just want to make sure they didn't raise their hands. Asa Hutchinson Administrator Drug Enforcement Administration Conservative Political Action Conference Arlington, Virginia February 1, 2002 “Drugs and Terrorism” House Committee Shelves Medical Marijuana Bill By Heather Clark Source: Associated Press February 11, 2006 Santa Fe, NM A House panel has shelved a Senate-passed bill that would have allowed patients suffering from illnesses like cancer or AIDS to use marijuana prescribed by a doctor to alleviate their pain. With the end of the legislative session set for Thursday, the move likely kills the bill for this session. The Agriculture and Water Resources Committee tabled the measure on a 4-3 vote Saturday. "Why are you trying to kill us?'' Essie DeBonet, 61, of Albuquerque shouted at committee members as the vote sank in after an emotional hearing on the proposal. However this figure does unjustice to the toll exacted on millions of Americans and their families. The far reaching and unintended effects of our drug policies have undoubtedly caused more harm than the drugs themselves ever could have. Even as cannabis has been found to be ``probably the most potent anti-epileptic known to medicine today [2],'' according to Dr. Van Sim, and even as it has been found to stop epileptic seizures in children not responding to legal drug therapies [3], these former presidents fear that medical access would send the message to children, true as it may be, that cannabis is safe. hemphistorian "Marijuana is the fourth most popular drug in the world, proceeded only by alcohol, nicotine and caffeine. Unlike these drugs however, marijuana has never, in the history of mankind, caused a single death. Also, unlike these drugs, marijuana is illegal in the United States.
