Welcome to growing Killa
As you can see there are lots of options available.
I guess it's a question of what you are picturing?
If you grow you will need fresh air and the best lighting and odor control you can afford at the time. Be prepared to uopgrade later
You seem to be pretty handy and Peace turtle did a thread on a DIY carbon filter.

Not a bad answer in the whole thread.

IF I had a choice, I'd take the closet over a cabinet any day. I built a "closet type box" that I was going to slide into a corner of my room, but I have a main support for the house in the way and my bed would not fit where I wanted it to go, so now I have this walk in crate and a bookshelf.

Take the closet.

Killa, consider the "buy once" approach.

It will save u money (on the long run) and (most important) headaches!
Good equipment will giva ya better plants and a stealthier + more secure enviroment.

You need to bring fresh air in your walk in closet (somehow) and extract the hot/smelly air (its only "smelly" when they re in flower).

Get a proper 250WHPS or 400 system. Digital ballast (with timer and contactor built in if possible), good reflector and a lamp for that system.

Inline fan (to extract air) from the room and a carbon filter to clean the air.

Get a smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher. Its good to have em in your house, regardless if u grow or not

And now for the most important :

You said you live with your sis. Is she cool with you growing? Make sure you tell her not to tell anyone that you re growing. Not even to best friends or bf's. If she brings bf's or gf's in the house, make sure the grow is out of their site (in another part of the house/apt). Make sure u have a carbon filter to clean the air in the closet. Smell is the biggest giveout.

A bf that comes in the apt every now and then can figure out the smell of dank.

read read read. Do your homework. this way you ll know what to expect at certain grow stages. The veg cycle, flower cycle, etc.

Buy good soil and canna friendly nutes. This way you ll have less PH or def/ncy problems later on, more yeild, happier plants and more buds.

the best bud, is your homegrown

I believe you have to first understand and make plausible your goals;
1) how many plants do you want to grow
2) how big will the strain you select get (in veg & flower stages)
3) how will you control your environment (temps, air flow & circulation, feeding resources)
4) type of grow (soil/hydro/other)
5) what are the risks (from within and without)
This is just my 2 p but to try to hide something like this from a sibling is not going to work; it will cause problems. Why not just be straight with and create an ally and not an adversary; because this will when they find out. You cannot keep something like this a secret from you sister who is living with you. If it is her house she may just try to teach you a lesson; people's houses get confiscated for doing this in the US. Is it worth it?

If you are in an apartment remember that the landlord usually has the right (depending on the local laws and lease agreements) to inspect the property at most anytime (given certain parameters) and the landlord will not hesitate to contact the authorities to protect their interests; again property can be seized with little or no cause; behold the "Patriot Act". the golden key for law enforcement in the US.

Who said I was trying to hide anything from my sister?

I seriously doubt that word is going to get around to where my house is going to get fucked with.

Oh by the way, does an air ionizer work as well as a carbon filter?

Why not? Although a bigger space might require a bigger filter and fan.

the air will need to be extracted from somewhere, otherwise you'll have the smell all through the place, that will need a fan, a fan can push the extracted air through a filter to remove odour.

If I run more than one filter will it help reduce the stank?

one larger filter, with one larger capacity quality fan
more surface area, better value for money

Major Edit: I did not see that this shit was 2 years old. Fuck.

Hey killa, I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but you should seriously look into getting a cool tube.

I used to grow in a closet, and I had a hard time keeping it cool. After I got the cool tube the temperature in the closet was only a couple of degrees higher than the room it stood in.

And yes, if your carbon fitler fits your vent, 1 is enough. You can't smell a damn thing. Pretty amazing actually.

You either push out the air, with the intake being at the vent, or you can pull it out, with the intake being at the cool tube.

Pulling is always better. I used to push it out though, the air didn't have to travel that far..

Pushing:

Pulling:

Best of luck to you man, good idea to step out of the game and become the Gamemaster.

If you push the air out through the filter, take the sleeve from the outside and line the inside of the filter with it.
This helps prevent the filter being clogged up prematurely.
